Hey all -
So who'll be joining me in Westwood this Fall! Anyone start looking into housing?

I'll be doing the Ph.D in Health Services! 😍

Lucky you. I was an mph applicant in epi, just got told app was moved to EHS. I miss living in westwood ( lived 2 blocks from ucla.. until I was 16).

Not a lot of people planning on attending UCLA this fall, huh?

I will be there for CHS and am wondering what people are planning to do for housing. I am pretty familiar with the LA area and know what areas are best, but just wanted to see if people were planning on doing university housing or off-campus housing. Where are you looking at living and how are you trying to find apartments? Let me know!

Aren't you all lucky. I haven't even heard yet.. not that I have any hope. I'll wave to you all, from USC.

If things go right, I'll be here a year after the rest of you!

Oh! And congrats, digambara!

I'm actually looking at the PhD in HSR, too. Did you already have a masters? Mind PMing me some of your stats so I know if I'm anywhere near sizing up to your data?

I'll be attending this Fall! I will be in the Epi department. I just applied for graduate housing because I'm not at all familiar with LA.

Good luck with graduate housing. From what I've heard, unless your department places you on this special allocation list for housing (which are basically guaranteed housing spots), you will be automatically placed on the waitlist. When I called the other day, they said there was a 12 month wait for apartments.

There are definitely some better areas in LA that you could look at. Stay mostly on the west side (ie culver city, santa monica, palms, mar vista) and around school.

Once you have your BOL ID, log onto the UCLA CHO website for a database of listings.

Tiverton Court is a really good location worth looking into. It's right across the street from CHS.

I believe graduate housing (Weyburn Terrace) is only guaranteed two years, but I'm not sure

Okay. Thank you both for the advice/info

I would call them ASAP - if you've been told you were recommended for admission it should not have taken this long for the dean/grad admissions to sign off.

I was redirected from epi to EHS in early April and finally received notification of admission on May 11 (acceptance letter dated April 28).

Have you checked your online account status through GDNet?

I just got into EHS today... so here I come, UCLA Fall 09! I could use some didi reese right now!

Too expensive for my blood with this economy! Make them go back to $0.75!

Did you get a letter? On my online acceptance, there's a link, and you click on the link. had to get a UCLA ID, and then fill the forms out.

Yeah, I got the link in my acceptance letter. When I click on it, it takes me to the URSA web page. After I log in though, I can't see any links for the SIR or SLR.

I think it took a day or so before the option to accept admission appeared (for me at least).

Has anybody registered or know what classes they plan to take?

Hopefully, I will be taking CHS 210, HS 100, and Biostats 100A.

My registration opens tomorrow. I'm in EHS, but I've either taking biostats 100a or 110a ( are those the same?), EHS 200a, and either HS100 or EHS M411. I took biostats as an undergrad.. hopefully that helps 😉

I'm taking the same. I really want to take an elective class, but that letter we got said not to register for anything besides the basics until we meet with our advisors - hopefully what I want to take will still be open and/or I can talk my way into it in the fall!

Where did you decide to live? I'm looking now - LA is so challenging for affordable housing.

I found a place right off santa monica--> the street to the west of sawtelle ( corinth). I'm taking EHS 200a, M411, BS 100A. Basically the only options I had, since the other seem to have time conflicts.

hi everyone, I was just wondering for everyone who has experience applying, or being accepted to UCLA, would you say that UCLA places more emphasis on stats, or experience/letter of intent? UCLA is my top choice, but I've heard it's one of the most competitive....

thanks!!!

I had sub-par stats, but a great letter of intent ( or so I'd like to think). Just be honest, and apply.

in my letter of intent I was going to write about my internship with the OC Health Care Agency, and my devotion to the field of public health. I'm not going to go into my sub-par stats, but just mention that I learned from my mistakes...do you guys think that sounds good??

thank you!!!

Hi Quick Question

I was also an EPI applicant redirected and then accepted to EHS, for an MPH

Just wondering, does anyone know about transferring between the two departments? I'd really like the EPI training

I start this fall

Thanks!
