hey guys,

i thought it'd be cool if we post our interview date and then if we are still waiting or if we got results (and what date you got it); i haven't seen a ucla thread in a while!

i interviewed on 12/20 and have not heard as of today (3/2) -- "final decision letter" on status page is still blank

:p

right there with ya matt! :(
interviewed 12/19 and not a peep!

just a thought, but did you have the really old ob/gyn dude matt? maybe he's infamous for turning in late interview reports... it's a long shot but hoping that it's just not me...

Interviewed 12/13, final decision letter 2/1.

Hopefully all of you who are anxiously awaiting will hear in the next batch!

(I have no idea when that is, but don't get too worked up playing the waiting game, they haven't sent those who have been accepted any info besides a final decision letter as of Fri.)

Hey wassuppers people,

I just got back from my mstp interview this thursday/friday 2/28 3/1. So they said that they were gonna notify us with some kinda decision perhaps around 3/15. One of my interviewers even mentioned most of the mstp'rz get offered acceptance as a reg MD, which is coool. So maybe they'll started sending stuff out sooon.

jrucb:

are md/phd mstp programs binding? i.e. if you got accepted to a mstp program and matriculate, but decide that you don't want to go through w/ it but would rather just get an MD, could you still stay at the school? 1) u made your decision before school starts 2) u made your decision during first year 2) u made ur decision after 2nd year?

R u sayign that accepted mstp applicants are notified first by the regular MD committee adn then from the MDPHD committee later; OR some mstp applicants are accepted into teh MD program but not to MST program?

Interviewed 2/12, not heard yet.

interviewed 1/17...heard nothing <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I interviewed in december, forget the exact date. I haven't heard a peep, does anybody know how much of the class is filled??
I am hoping for the best considering my almost perfect scores, seems like some of these med school admission committees get off by sitting on apps and holding them or something, hahah.

Best wishes.

Hey meddude and chef:

I think they said they'd notify about MD first, then MSTP, but in my case...since I was the last interview group, I'll prolly get both decisions at the same time. But they said most of the MSTP applicants that are offered interviews, get at least regular MD acceptance.
As for deciding to not pursue the MSTP program and opting instead only for an MD, i'm not sure how that works and how common it is. From speaking with many of the MSTP students, they said the other way around is more prevalent. Some students who finish their PHD, drop out of the program to pursue a purely research career. Kinda crazy not finishing the last two years tho...

•••••jrucb,
if this is indeed true, I'd be ecstatic!!! <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" />

But how sure are you about this claim? Who was it exactly that quoted you on this? I really want to believe this claim, but it's a bit outrageous.. think about it, UCLA med has ~130 students (not counting ucla/drew), and they interview ~70-80 applicants for MSTP - would u think they would fill their regular MD class w/ all of us when there are 6000 other applicants applying???

i find that hard to believe also

i interviewed on january 14, and got the thumbs up on february 1 :) good luck everyone!

I had a horrible interview on December 7th and have not heard anything since then.

Interviewed on Dec. 5, and not a peep since. They must be on the top of their game...

Hmmm...I had the ob/gyn guy too. I interviewed in early Nov. and have been dying to call for an update, but I don't want to be annoying.

can someone please please call to ask when they're sending out the next acceptances? i've called several times and have always spoken with the "monotone guy" who never seems to provide any substantial info...i don't want to call again and start pissing people off! thanx

i called and apparantly the committee meets on the 15th of every month, which means acceptances go out the week after.
hope that helps, i'm still waiting too.

I called today too and just asked generally what the timeline post-interview is. The guy told me that files are chosen randomly to go to the committee and then as soon as the committee makes a decision, they'll let you know. So although the committee meets on the 15th, it's luck whether an individual app has been sent to the committee by that time. Now what I don't understand (and I didn't want to press my luck so I didn't ask) why don't they just send the apps in the order that they're interviewed instead of this random thing they seem to have going on?

ooooooooh man. chosen randomly!???? argh. with my luck, i'll have to wait for the april batch :p

the guy told me that they review primaries randomly as well. if they are rolling, which they are, wouldn't it make sense to review applicants in order?

i think what the guy means by randomly is that they decide to vote/decide on the stronger applicants first, regardless of when they submitted or interviewed at UCLA.

barb and booyah,
thanx for the calls! they are much appreciated. hopefully, we'll all hear some good news sometime in the VERY near future!

UCLA is notoriously one of the sloooowest schools to get back to students. When I interviewed there (early Jan) my student interviewer told me that there are 5 different committees made up of about 20 faculty/students. He said when we hear really depends on when our committee gets around to reviewing our application. That along with what barb heard about them reviewing randomly...this could take forever!

Hopefully all of us here will hear something (good news preferably) soon!

Hopefully I can provide an answer to you MSTP questions. I live with 2 first year MSTP students here at UCSF and they told me that they can drop out of the PhD program at any time w/o having to pay back any of the tuition/ or stipend (the administration wouldn't be very happy though). From what I understand their is no "contractual agreement" that says you have to fulfill the PhD portion of your degree. I am not sure how it works at UCLA, but since it is the same system, I would assume it would be similar there also. On a side note, one of students plans to leave after getting the PhD portion of his degree and not finish the last 2 years of the MD.

Hey chef,

It was one of my Phd interviewers from the Phy Sci dept that told me that bit of info. They said that about 60-70 MSTPrs are interviewed. MD interviews about 600 and accepts ~twice as many as matriculate right? So they accept ~210 and ~120 enroll. Same with MSTP, they accept about 22, and 10 enroll at ucla and 2 at Caltech. And since most MSTPrs want to pursue an MSTP program, even if they offer MD only acceptances, chances are they'll take up an MSTP offer from another school. Even if they fill 50 MD spots with MSTP applicants, there would still be 150-160 spots of MD only applicants

For those who have been accepted, did you send in your final transcripts before you got your acceptance? I know most schools only need your transcripts before you actually matriculate, but that "Transcripts: Requested" note on the status page is starting to make me nervous. Do they hold acceptance decisions until they have your transcripts? (btw, I emailed the admissions office with this question and never got a reply.)
thanks.

It is better, if you are unsure about whether or not to apply MSTP, to wait and apply once you are in medical school for several reasons: 1) you may find that clinical medicine is very much your thing and choose not to apply MSTP at all, 2) you may find that the clinical medicine is not satisfying and that you do in fact want a career in research, 3) the first two years of medical school gives you a broad exposure to a wide range of topics, which may spark research interests. The bottom line is that only people who are committed to or have strong interests in both medicine and research should apply MSTP. The reasons should be thought out well in advance of applying.

For more discussion on this topic (and applying MD/PhD in general), I'll refer people to the following web site:
<a href="http://go.to/mdphd" target="_blank">http://go.to/mdphd</a>
(yes, a shameless plug...)
and check out the section on "Dropping the MD or PhD"

Hope this helps. :D

thanks.•••••You need to send your transcripts when they request it.. They asked me to send mine when they sent the interview notification.. other schools are also asking people to send official transcripts when interviewing.. hope this helps!
