i got the unranked waitlist letter in the mail on saturday and just mailed off my letter accepting the spot today. i am going to send them an e-mail as well just to let them know its coming and also asking if they could let me know when they get it.

I know its sucks, but it will come... i hope you get in and come to second look! 😛

thanks for the encouragment, ladydoc! i'm really glad that everything has worked out for you thus far. im still waiting for UCLA to send me a decision, but am seriously losing hope with each day that passes. i'll be really shocked if i hear any positive news at this point. nevertheless, i hope we get to be classmates next year cause you seem like a really awesome person and it would be great to meet you in person 😀

:luck: to everyone else still waiting!

I hope letters get sent today! DGSOM has a holiday tomorrow and I don't want to wait anymore! 🙁

So only 50 individuals are placed on the unranked waitlist?

So only 50 individuals are placed on the unranked waitlist?

Yes, I've heard that 50 are placed on the unranked WL. This is the top waitlist, after which is the hold list. Of the 50 on the unranked WL, a lot are accepted to the school. Of those on the hold list, none are accepted.

sorry, none are USUALLY accepted from the hold list. doesn't mean you should lose hope, just be realistic...

wait, i thought in the earlier post they said that the unranked waitlist really doesnt have 50 people, and that it more likely was 200 people? where did you hear that the unranked waitlist was only 50? that might shed a light of hope in my direction!

im an undergrad at UCLA right now ... just dropped off my letter accepting the waitlist and asked how many are on it ......

250!!!!! ... holy crap ... there went any shot i tought i might of had ....

250??!! They told me 100. Who did you talk to?

jesus h. christ, will the confusion surrounding this school ever clear up?

at this point i feel like a ouija board will give me more definite and reliable answers than anything i hear from this forum or the UCLA admissions office themselves.

dc5484 to ouija: "how many people are on the UCLA unranked waitlist?"

ouija's response: "yes."

dc5484: "ok!"

this is straight from the dgsom adm office. by a lady who seemed very knowledgable of the admissions process. she couldn't give me any concrete numbers since they're still interviewing these are the historical trends she gave me:

total interviewed: 700
unranked wl: 100-150
unranked hold (always a little smaller than unranked wl): 75-100
*i think kuhlguy's 250 figure may be including both lists. so there's hope for the unranked wl ppl.

stuff for unranked hold people:
1. waitlist needs to be exhausted first before hold are even considered
2. are re-reviewed in mid-july. but consider the fact that the first day of school is on august 4th
3. only a couple people, if any, get off the hold list every year

still kinda bummed about the hold but hopefully you guys will have better luck!

If a couple people do get off the hold list, does this mean that everyone on the unranked waitlist is admitted eventually? Seems unlikely....

well, consider some years when enough waitlist people get acceptances from schools they would pick over ucla. the amount of people removing themselves from the wl can be large enough to let a few people on hold in.

You just made my day! UCLA is my top choice, and it's nice to hear that there's a really good shot of getting in from the WL... i just hope this year is one of those years.

Add me to the unranked WL! I'm really not that dissapointed about this. Based on information on posts from the past two years and from what people are saying so far it seems like a lot of people get taken off the wl.

To everyone who got accepted to UCSF, UCSD, or other top tier schools... UCLA is really not that great!

To the rest of us... I really think there's still hope!

Also, did anyone recieve confirmation after sending in their letter accepting the wl? I'm curious to see if we get to go to 2nd look weekend, because I would really like to go!

Oh yes, and anyone who hears info. from the admissions office, please post! I know we'll get contradicting info. but still.. every piece helps ( I think)

I don't understand why everyone's complaining about the fact the unranked WL is 250 people big. It's still way way smaller than other WL/alternate lists. From a class of 120, you might see 40-60 matriculate off the waitlist which means you could potentially see 50-70 acceptances granted off the WL. 50-70/250 is a very very good ratio.

50/250 = 20% chance... that's not so good in my opinion!
It's weird to me when people post on here their speculations about how many come off the waitlist, I mean just a few posts above this someone said nearly all the people come off the waitlist, so then maybe one or two holds get accepted. And then there's other people who are saying only 20%... I hate all the confusion!! Not that I'm blaming anyone on here, I know we're all in the same boat : /

The unranked WL is NOT 250.

But why don't we all call the office and post our findings here. Let's see what response the majority of us get.

well, i think everyone, including myself, would rather there be 50-70 acceptances off a unranked waitlist of 100-150, than 50-70 acceptances off an unranked waitlist of 250. thats from a 50%+ chance down to about a 28% at best, respectively.

im hoping ( i truly dont know) that its the prior, because if in the past there has been a year where 1 maybe 2 were accepted off the hold list, that would indicate its more likely that the unranked waitlist is 100-150 people large (?). i dont think that out of 250 unranked WL people that they would not be able to find at least 70 people that want to go to UCLA over their other options. i think maybe out of 150 people enough of them will choose other top schools or other options so that the admission committee would then consider the hold list, to be more realistic probability. but that could just be me being optimistic.

true?

No offense, but it makes no sense to have people accepted off the hold list regardless of the size of the unranked WL. From what I read off last year's thread, hold = rejection. I don't see how a school as good as UCLA makes 100-150+ waitlist offers. If you look at the track record of Michigan or Columbia (the two schools ranked just ahead of UCLA), you are looking at 20-60 off the waitlist in a given year. Looking at the sheer number of unranked WL's received on SDN last week (compared with the few holds and few rejections) would tell you that A LOT of people got on the WL.

I think you're wrong. UCLA is a great school-- and I hope everyone who really wants to come here, gets the opportunity.

well now UCLA is a top 10 school

The yield probably also jumped 10%. 👎 Bad news for those on the waitlist.

The sad thing is that you're probably right. I don't want to believe that anyone would use US News Rankings in any part of their decision to go to their top choice, but their is definitely some schmoe out there who was waiting for this.

I was just saying that because I want people who have other acceptances to good schools to drop UCLA and go to another school, that way I have a better chance! I definitely think UCLA is a GREAT school!!! It has always been my number one 😍

Holy crap this has already been the longest month of my life. Come on UCLA!

just curious, does anyone know what weekend ucla's second look is?

April 18th for Drew/UCLA and April 19th for everyone (Drew, DG, UCR).

ah yes. let the doubling up of every aspect of med school (two second looks, administrative staffs, advisors, white coat ceremonies, senior colleges, graduations, etc) begin.

All that is fine as long as we don't have twice as much class..

haha, that's so true!

I called the admissions office today.

Admissions: School of Medicine.
RPedigo: Hi, I was wondering... how many applicants were placed on the unranked waitlist this year?
Admissions: Approximately two hundred.
RPedigo: And of those two hundred, how many admission offers do you expect to make?
Admissions: It varies, sometimes it is up to fifty percent who get off the waitlist, but other times virtually nobody comes off. It all depends on who decides to attend schools elsewhere, but I don't think there will be much movement this cycle.
RPedigo: Thanks. Have a good day.
Admissions: The same.

Super nice guy 👍

Although not such good news 😛

Thnxs for the update. I'm gonna guess they accept 50 off the waitlist this year (should I be more conservative?), I figure we stand roughly 25% chance of getting accepted. I gotta stop mulling over the numbers!!!

I think that I have decided that I prefer the UCR/UCLA program to UCLA straight due to the 24-person class size and the fact that we have actual dissection in anatomy lab, so I think there will be one less person on the waitlist.

Anyone wanna call and see if they are sending out letters this week before second look? 😀

Only 200 on the waitlist, eh? That's cool. I hope I get on the unranked waitlist. 1/4 odds sound pretty good.

I'm going to send a hardcopy of my waitlist acceptance to the office, but what email address did you guys use if you used that way too?
