I just received an email from UCLA inviting me to fill out their secondary application. I'm just putting up this thread so that people can post their questions regarding UCLA's secondary application.
Good luck everyone!👍

Me too.
I skim through the secondary apps.
Almost 99.99999% of the questions were answered in AADSAS application.

Is it okay if we just copy our answers over?
I mean...they are literally the same EXACT questions.....:annoyed:

Here's the thing. When I was reapplying this year, I called the school and asked their admission coordinator whether or not it was OK for me to use my last year's personal statement again, and she specifically told me that they don't like students reusing stuff. It sorta makes sense, because it looks like you haven't put any additional effort into it, which shows your lack of interest. So, I think it's always a good idea to rewrite some of your sentences instead of simply copy/pasting them, just so that they don't look exactly the same and at least sound somewhat different from what you have in your AADSAS application.

So. Why am I applying to UCLA? I find this one so hard!!

All I can come up is: It is UCLA!! And I am a resident of California.

What more do I have to say?
😕

well, it's a little different with the personal statement because things change after a year

I love the redundancy of the supplemental application. How many different ways would they like me to explain my shadowing/volunteering experiences? I lost a little bit of interest in UCLA the moment I looked over the supplemental. If they are going to judge me based on what I write in response to their questions then I will judge them on the questions they ask; UCLA may just be a bit too bureaucratic for my taste. 😎

Seems easy.

Only one question really: Why UCLA?
Everything else is explain research and explain community service.

is this like UCSF secondary where if you meet minimum requirements you get the app?

I personally think UCLA secondary is easier than UCSF secondary. UCSF had more similar essays with limited spaces. UCLA is more tolerant with spaces. I also get to elaborate on my research experience as well.

But again.. why UCLA?😱 I mean. Yes. It has been my top choice for years. Yet, I must have forgotten why this school is my favorite.

What successfully decreases my interest in that school right now is the inability to make a pdf file for 2ry with normal type-in fields:bang:.

Ya, how do we fill it in...do we erase the lines and write in their place?

We could do it by hand.

They prefer it typed and they want the format to stay the same (aka cannot convert to pdf).

Gotta address that issue on the interview 😀

"So the first thing I don't like about your school is that secondary..."

Tell me how it goes 😀

On the serious note, I don't understand why they can't just make the pdf file. Unless they don't have acrobat pro.
It took me 15 minutes to convert that doc to pdf and correct all fields for type-in.

You're right. I have a question. Should I write ABOVE the lines. Or overwrite the lines?

Like: John
________
First name

OR: John
First name

First or second?

First or second?

It doesn't matter I think. But to return back the favor you can write
J O H N

😀

I haven't received an email from UCLA yet about the secondary application....Are you guys part of the first batch of AADSAS mailout?

I'm also having trouble filling it out. So, I decided to do a combination of hand-writing (for the name, school stuff, etc.) and typing for the essays and questions. I hope this doesn't end up looking bad to the adcoms, but it's really difficult to make it look neat.

haha sorry my wireless keyboard is acting kinda ******ed. I type too fast and sometimes the word dont come up. what I meant was a MONTH AGO.
I guess UCLA looks at people with research first.

I just got mine today. My friend on the other hand got one a month with a lot lower stats.
Your "friend" is probably BSing you if he/she told you that he/she has gotten a secondary from UCLA a month ago, because I spoke with Noemi Benitez (UCLA admission coordinator) a week ago and she personally told me that NO secondary application invites have gone out yet! In fact, the e-mails that have gone out today are probably the first batch of secondary invites!

To be honest...I don't believe your friend. I think lots of SDNers have research and none of us were offered a secondary. Have you seen his email including the secondary?

EDIT: Me and nze agreeing.

That's probably not a good idea, because it's gonna end up looking very messy. I agree that since it's a .doc file instead of a .pdf it's somewhat harder to fill out. But I think you're better off if you stick with either typing or writting, instead of mixing the two!

I think my AADSAS app was also included in the first batch. Have you taken the DAT yet? Some schools won't send you secondaries till they see scores on your file. If you haven't gotten anything yet, don't worry! UCLA's admission process is slowwwwwwww and painful! So, give it some time and you should receive the email.

Oh trust me, we're like best friends. She knows everything that's going on with me this cycle and I know everything that goes on with hers. She has no reason to lie to me what so ever.

We'll I'm pretty sure she's lying about this one! Why?! No idea!!!!

I believe all schools have a minimum requirement, before they even consider your your app. I mean if one doesn't meet the minimum requirements, then what's the point of having him/her fill out an application. That's simply gonna generate more work for the people who are reviewing all these applications and I don't think any school wants that. But then again, pretty much anyone who is serious about dentistry will meet such minimum requirements (What are they? Like a DAT score of 17 and a GPA of 2.9+?).

don't you need to get hard transcripts from all schools and send with supplemental to UCLA?

You can either send it to the school separately, or you can include it with your secondary application package. If you decide to do this, you must make sure that all transcripts are in sealed packages, or else the school will not accept them.

They also want my high school transcript?
Am I misreading the statement?

What about all my research letter of recommendation?
AADSAS already has all my LOR...

Do I really have to get another copy to send it to them?

On the secondary it indicates that they want research LOR...😱

No! You're not misreading it. If you've gone to High School here in the US, you need to send them your transcripts. Good thing I didn't go to HS here😀

The research LORs aren't required! But it would be a good idea to include a letter from a faculty that was your mentor or supervisor. One of my AADSAS LORs is written by my supervisor, so I'm not going to add another copy of the same letter with my secondary.

I have to agree with the other two posters. I also talked with Noemi Benitez on the phone two weeks ago, and she said that the first batch would go out two weeks from then (so I'm guessing this was the first batch). Maybe your friend was talking about UCSF? UCSF is already doin interviews too I heard (don't quote me on that) lol ........

Hmm sorry didn't mean to start a rumor about UCSF doing interviews already lol. I thought I heard some one say that sort of thing, but they has definitely been sending secondaries for a month.

Wow...do they have time to give out some Dec 1 acceptances?
Last year, when I interviewed for UCSF on Dec 5th, their class was already 60% full. So, yes! They have time to give out some Dec 1st acceptances.

P.S. They were still waiting on few people to pay their fees.

Is there also a crazy 21 day deadline on this supplemental like UCSF had?? This 14 pager is a pain, and coupled with the insane heat SoCal is experiencing makes me sooo lazy to even start haha 😛

I looked at the entire application and I didn't see any deadlines. I checked on their website and the only thing they have mentioned is that applications received after Jan 1st won't be reviewed. So, I'm guessing there's no deadline for the secondary. But UCLA being UCLA and considering the large number of students who would gladly kill in order to get into UCLA, I suggest you turn on the AC and start filling out the application ASAP!

since there is no deadline for UCLA.... and no doubt UCLA will have huge number of applicants... So when do you think it is the appropriate time frame to turn in the PHF? Please share your thoughts...
