Thanks.
vikings022000 said:off topic, but my dental advisor asked where I got in, and I told him I was going to UCLA. he went off about this thing about how uscf was the best in the nation in research and clinical... 😡 made me kinda mad. i know ucsf is a great school, not taking anything away from them, but an unheard of amount of specialization and 2nd highest board scores in the country do argue otherwise. in my opinion no one school is "better" than the other. you just go to the school that you feel more comfortable with. i guess what burst my bubble was the fact that he was so heavily biased towards uscf in our convo., which i guess is ok since it's just his perspective.
btw the same advisor told me to apply after i took my dat's in summer, so essentially i applied late by following his advice.
again, 😡
vikings022000 said:DAT, maybe the crowd applying to ucsf want's go to into general dentistry, and ucsf offers them an affordable avenue to do so. consider the alternatives for general dentistry in CA... loma linda, usc, uop (all are private and cost quite a bit more), and maybe ucla (although ucla is known for specialization). so, even though they can specialize if they choose to do so, they choose instead to go into general practice. Of course, this is just my little theory, lol.
I feel you should be able to specialize coming out of both schools, as both schools are great, but go with the one that you feel more comfortable with, because in the end, you'll be happier there.
ps-how can u go wrong being blocks away from santa monica 😀
KAP said:you guys needs to realize that UCLA is one of the best schools for dentistry. Who cares what your advisor said. I know that certain people can have a huge influence over the decision you make, but in the end, everyone becomes a dentist... REGARDLESS of where you went to get the education for it. With that said, pick the school that's best for YOU, not what other people believe is best for you. i guarantee you all will become successful dentists in the future.
and for people who are truely torn between UCSF and UCLA... go to ucla and match at UCSF for whatever specialty program you choose... its a win-win situation.
Mrxle3 said:Hi KAP, hope to meet you in the fall.
I wanted to ask, what makes you guys so sure that you want to specialize? What are the factors in your motivation? I seem to be one of the few entering UCLA students who as of now want my options open, but do not plan on specializing.
KAP said:sorry for talking about east coast pharmacy stores.... my bad.. right now i'm WASTED, just took my last final of undergrad!
mcshow2 said:And dr. hobie... that post sounded borderline impartial... which goes against my theory above. Next time, I would appreciate your advice to have a little more pro-ucla slant. thankyou. 😉

datman- i am looking forward to hearing your reasoning.

dat_student said:There is one thing that I haven't figured out. UCLA has told me that ~50% of students successfully match to specialty programs (excluding GPR and AEGD) and ~75% successfully match to post-DDS programs (i.e. including GPR and AEGD).
Current UCLA students say, last year, 17 students got into ortho and 2 successfully matched to OMFS programs.
Class size = 88 + some international dentists = 100
1/2 * class size = 50 students
50 - (17 + 2) = 31 students
Does that mean 31 students sucessfully matched to perio, pediatric, prosthodontics and endodontics???!!!
drhobie7 said:Only 1 student applied to OMS. He matched. I don't know if they count the international students when computing graduates who specialize. I wouldn't count them. International students face significant challenges that we won't when they apply to residencies, plus very few of them apply to any kind of residency program. They're generally tired of being in school. Remember most have worked as dentists for a number of years in their own country. They don't need an AEGD or GPR. But, even if you count them, it's entirely possible that 30 people matched to perio, pedo, pros, anesthesia, endo, and pathology. Perio and pedo got a ton of people. Endo usually gets about 5.
dat_student said:Thanks drhobie7. Now, I am 100% convinced UCLA is better than UCSF.
drhobie7 said:Hehe. Yeah, it was impartial. Here's my perspective: I don't need to sell UCLA to anybody. It's like that line in Pulp Fiction: "I don't have to sell this 'cause this **** sells itself." I know it's an outstanding school. If they know it and want to come here great. If they don't know it, that's ok and I'm glad they'll go elsewhere. I certainly don't want people here who would have been happier staying up in SF. So there you have it. The best students to have at UCLA are those who are fun, kind, intelligent, and can think of nowhere else they'd rather be. Regarding that last quality, that's something I can't convince them, nor would I want to. They either feel it or they don't.
Party on. 👍
U2Me2 said:Me, I'm going with Idaho over both UCSF and UCLA. Why?
#1)
Don't need to worry about a scholarship
#2)
Housing is much cheaper than either SF or LA
#3)
4 years from now - no debt
#4)
No Idaho student has ever been rejected from a post-doc match
#5)
Even though both schools are P/NP, there one stat that both try to hide. If you were to do a ranking of board scores for either school, you would fine that half of each class winds up in the bottom 50% of the distribution.

EyeAmCommi said:So guys, when can we officially move over to the Dental Forum and leave the Pre-dental Forum for good?
Is it when we first step foot into UCLA's doors for orientation?
Is it when we first move into our housing units/apartments?
Is it when we first start attending class?
Or is it when dat_student, KAP, mcshow2 decides to go over there that the rest of us will follow? 😀

CONGRATULATIONS!Fliberdigibit said:First post on SDN, so be gentle. I received word from Noemi on Wed. that I've been accepted to the best dental school in the country....UCLA. I interviewed on April 13th and they informed me on April 25th. Pretty fast turnaround thankfully.
Cheers to the rest of the Class of 2010 for working their arses off and getting into a great school.
Looking forward to getting to know all of you.
Thanks mitosis. I bet life is great right now.mitosis said:I went into the admissions office to turn in my paperwork a couple of days ago and I bumped into and met JK5177 from SDN. JK5177 had been really helpful in answering my pm's and I was really happy to meet my first SDN pal. 😀
lol. I'm only here on Fridays. Friday afternoon is the time I set for SDN and checking hotmail. No other times. Couple months back. I did a small tabulation of how I organize my time, and I realize that if I only check hotmail and SDN on Fridays, it save me like 3 hours a week - that's 3 hours I could spend doing anything... say Westwod Arcade, day dream, or whatever.EyeAmCommi said:Maybe we won't study while we're in school and spend all our time on SDN.
LOL! That's hilarious. I wasn't tested.KAP said:I know this is a very unusual question for a future UCLASOD student, but when we take the physical exam, does it entail a drug test?
