I finished all my health stuff last week - The whole thing costed me only $50. I suggest that if you still have access to your school's health center, get the blood tests done before you graduate (so it's cheaper).

hey guys.. i just found out that im in the middle percentage on the waitlist.. so i guess i won't be seeing any of you guys in fall.. gluck to you all!

Jeez, too bad. You have to "settle" on Ivy League Columbia. [Please read the sarcasm.]

Good luck to you; you are going to one of the best schools in the nation.

Just graduated college today!!!

Did anyone hear from housing lately? I thought that the lottery would be chosen in June for Weyburn, but I have not heard a single thing yet. Anyone else?

I just got a call this morning saying that I got guaranteed housing.

Good luck, see you soon.

I passed my CPR+etc exam and received my two year certification card. 🙂 The exam was NOT as easy as I thought it would be.

This may help those who haven't taken the CPR test yet:

............................Adult ( 9 yrs+)
How much air should I blow in?...Slowly blow only hard enough to see the victim's chest rise

Choking: conscious: Use the abdominal thrust technique or the chest thrust technique (the latter is for the American Heart Association exam)
(Remember to ask for permission)

Choking: Unconscious Thrust on chest 15 times. 2 hands, Open mouth, look for object, remove it, try to give "2" - slow breaths, see if chest rises, then check for signs of a pulse

Rescue Breathing - not breathing, yes pulse 1 breath / 5 seconds, recheck pulse after 12 breaths

CPR Not breathing, no pulse: 15 compressions, 2 breaths (2 hands)(4 cycles). Check pulse? 2 hands/2 breaths

Heart Rate? 100 beats per minute

Compression Depth? 1.5-2 inches

............................Child ( 1-8 yrs+ old)

Choking: conscious: 5 back blows, 5 chest thrust

Choking: Unconscious 5 back blows, 5 chest thrust Open mouth, look for object, remove it, try to give "2" - slow breaths, see if chest rises, then check for signs of a pulse

Rescue Breathing - not breathing, yes pulse 1 breath / 3 seconds, recheck pulse after 20 breaths

CPR Not breathing, no pulse: 5 compressions, 1 breath (1 hand)(20 cycles). Check pulse? 1 hand (2 fingers - some recommend two thumbs - check with your instructor << It was one of my tricky questions)/1 breath

Heart Rate? More than 100 beats per minute

Compression Depth? 0.5-1 inch

Also know:

Circoid Pressure (Sellick Maneuver)

The carotid artery is used to assess the pulse of an adult or child

The brachial artery is used to assess the pulse in an infant

Conscious choking: Adults: if pregnant or obese & complete airway obstruction >> use chest thrusts to relieve the obstruction. Otherwise, use abdominal thrusts

*Each question was based on a scenario.

Nothing from me. I still have to get the health clearance and CPR classes. Anyone else? Anyone hear from Weyburn housing lately?

i just got a letter about the SHIP insurance. otherwise, nothing about the financial aid. rumor has it, you will not know it until late august.

I got that SHIP insurance letter today as well. They forgot to pack in the return envelope :/ I'm anxiously awaiting word on housing.

Can someone tell me where I can get CPR certification? I just moved back home a few weeks ago and have all my stuff in boxes. I can't find anything.

To find a CPR class near you, go to the following web site and enter your ZIP code:

http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3011764

Make sure you take the PROFESSIONAL LEVEL CPR.

I called the graduate housing yesterday and they told me next week on July 5,6, and 7 they will do the lottery. How much is it true? I do not know. I have gotten so many conflicting informations! Any way watch your emails next week. I really think getting to dental school was much easier than getting to Weyburn! Any way if you have any other informations please post. Thanks

I got an email today from yolanda in housing. Attached was a letter describing my weyburn studio and all that good stuff. so you guys might be getting something soon too!

Our estimated Student Contribution on URSA has been calculated. You guys can go check it out.

I thought we are to find a course on Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. I wonder if it's different from "Professional Level CPR" in any way.

Hello tofufob,
I apologize for my late reply. I've had a ton of problems with my computer in the past few weeks and I can't find my recovery CD to fix the problems. I believe there are two CPR classes: one for health professionals and one for others. I am 99.99% sure you must take the CPR class for health professionals (i.e. health care providers). I took CPR+a bunch of other stuff (AED etc) to make sure.....You may want to double check with Noemi.
Best wishes

all we need to take is BLS for healthcare providers.

is anyone else buying season tickets to all the athletic events?

I'll be happy to just attend a few games here and then. Season tickets may be a lil too much for me. I gotta give you props for not worrying about school work being too overwhelming!

Has anyone been able to collect 150 cavity-free teeth?

drhobie7 said:
When you do, let me know. I could use some.

I am so behind and super-nervous at the moment. I have problems with my computers & internet connection. Still no recovery CDs. I don't think I can collect that many teeth. I haven't obtained "a health clearance." I don't know which vaccines I need (if any). I have had my vaccines all over the world. I have no access to all my records. This is nerve-racking. + This public library smells horrible. I need a mask & an oxygen tank to check my mail accounts in this library. I have no choice. I must come here to check my mails. Running out of oxygen. :scared: I must sign out now.

Just relax. I haven't done any of the health-related stuff, have not gotten CPR-certified, and I'm not even sure of the status of my teeth collection. I know nothing of my financial aid status, and I do not have a guaranteed spot for Weyburn. This is my situation...compare it to yours, and realize that you should not be worrying if I am not =)

I haven't gotten jars for teeth collection, contacted any dentists, not done any health related crap either so its nice to know there are others sort of like me. I won't get back from Europe until August, I hope it'll be alright.

we don't need the teeth till january, so you all have plenty of time to collect.

enjoy europe!

If you log into your URSA accnt you may be able to figure out how much $$$ you'll receive. I think the school has calculated students' and parents' contributions.

P.S. There is no way to get a new Pentium M laptop with a 4 yr warranty. It's an old technology and intel doesn't make them anymore. The latest laptops have Intel (TM) Duo CoreProcessors (i.e. two separate core processors in one computer). Almost all laptops don't have serial and parallel ports. The S/R ports seem to have been replaced by the USB ports. It is impossible to get a laptop that has all the specified features.+ I have no idea what "expansion slot, TYPE III" is. I know that we have expansion slots I and II. Not sure if any computer company makes the "expansion slot type III" 😕

I just received my housing offer for Weyburn Terrace today through e-mail. It's for a two bedroom/two person.

Are we supposed to receive a paper contract etc., or is everything for the Housing online?

Not sure...I haven't received a paper contract. I think you should be able to check everything online. Double check with the housing office.

Yea, I think the required laptop specs are a bunch of crap. I even emailed the school's IT guys to clarify S/R ports and TYPE III expansion slots. They seemed to be confused at what I was asking too.

Anway, just to play safe, I'm thinking about buying the latest DELL laptop from the school sometime in August. I couldn't think of a better way to fulfill as many recommended specs as possible, especially when it comes to the 4 year warranty.

I got the exact same thing. Are we gonna be roomies?

BOND said:
Did everyone before us get offered a Weyburn studio?

I'm not sure. But I think having another grad. student living next door would help prevent me from becoming a hermit. Plus, its someone you dont have to call to eat with. In my eyes, I wouldnt see the 2-bedrooms as any less preferable than the studios.

I actually wanted a 2 bedroom so I could meet someone new and have someone to talk to, etc. This is, of course, assuming that my roomate doesn't have a rare form of toe fungus and that he's not dirty or super loud 😀

Today, I noticed some laptops have the expansion slot, type III. My laptop has one type II expansion slot. Do we have to have the type III slot or two type IIs/Is???!!! 😕

I think you guys are going a little nuts with these laptop requirements. Basically as long as it runs Windows, you're cool.

DrHobie,
Thanks. I won't pay much attention to the details.

For those who are curious:

Portable Computer Cards (PC cards) are interchangeable peripherals designed to be inserted into laptop computers in order to enable extra hardware functions. Such cards include (but are not limited to) flash memory, modems, network interface cards, and SCSI disk controllers.

They were first called PCMCIA cards as the original standards were set by the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association.

The PCMCIA has developed a new notebook peripheral specification called ExpressCard.

The first PC cards (PCMCIA, with the more logical IBM meaning: Peripheral Component Microchannel Interconnect Architecture) were Type I, and supported actual Memory Cards (e.g. Linear or ATA Type I Flash Memory Cards), such as SRAM or flash memories. Type II cards added I/O support in addition to memory applications, and type III expanded functionality. The interface's role as I/O for various devices has largely superseded its role as a Memory Card, but this role did spawn a generation of flash memory cards that set out to improve on the size and features of ATA Type I cards (CompactFlash, MiniCard and SmartMedia).

ExpressCard is a hardware standard replacing CardBus, both developed by the PCMCIA.

The major benefit of ExpressCard technology over the previous PCMCIA CardBus PC card is the major increase in bandwidth, as the ExpressCard has a maximum throughput of 500 MBps two-way communications versus CardBus' 132 MBps. This large increase is afforded by the fact that the ExpressCard has a direct connection to the system bus over a PCI Express x1 lane or USB 2.0, whereas CardBus utilizes an interface controller that only interfaces with PCI. In addition, the ExpressCard standard uses lower voltages and thus less power than the previous CardBus slots (1.5V and 3.3V versus 3.3V and 5.0V). I think that's why lighter, more mobile laptops only have the express card slots.

hey guys,
Looks like you have a new classmate. I just got called off the waitlist last friday. I'm guessing that someone decided to go to UOP maybe, since they just started? I just finished my undergrad at UCLA and had everything set to go study and Columbia, but I guess I'll hafta settle for four more years of 70 degree winters, and 4 more years of hating on kobe bryant. Man...and I just sold all my furniture. 😡

P.S. Can anyone tell me what forms there are online so that I could start filling them out to get a jump on pushing my paperwork through? Thanks a bunch.

wow, you sound so "bitter" going to UCLA. lol. Unless you were just joking. 😛

here's what you gotta get started on ASAP:

http://uclasod.dent.ucla.edu/admissions/index.asp?id=348#requirements

and get a passport pix of yourself handy, and they'll ask you to send it w/ other paperworks that they'll send you.

Remember parking permits, if you're gonna be commuting.

Get your HEALTH immunization records handy...cuz you'll have to do health clearance...
.
...AND...CPR classes! *sighz*

the last two...i haven't done! 😳

welcome to our class. We have some very awesome peeps out here. ^_^ You can see DAT_student is just way "above and beyond". You'll get your questions answered if you posted here. =P

So this is how you prepare for anatomy. The text that they are likely to be using is Clemente's anatomy, so I recommend getting that book no matter what else you've heard about Netter's. Also get Essential Clinical Anatomy by Moore and Aguir. The dissector (ie instruction manual for how you dissect) is Clemente's Dissector, so get that as well. Or I can sell you mine for half off the original price.
