I don't have a big sib yet either. Or maybe I do and he/she is too lazy at the moment to contact me...

I contacted a perio doc about collecting some teeth, and he told me that it's OSHA regulation for them to autoclave the teeth. The labels we are suppose to put out say "do not autoclave". I was wondering if anyone knows if it matters if the dentist goes ahead and autoclaves the teeth. It's just to make sure it's sterile right?

Uh, I know this was an old topic. DON'T AUTOCLAVE THEM. Unless you want to go searching for another endo molar to do. Autoclaving teeth ruin them and the roots will just fracture off when you're doing endo on them. Happened to some kids in my class who had a jar of autoclaved teeth...pretty much worth -$0.10 for the wasted formaldehyde you kept it in. The teeth have to be disinfected, ie: formalin (formaldehyde), glutaldehyde, 1:1 water:bleach, or even 1:10 water:bleach. Doesn't mean they have to be autoclaved.

Speaking of which, I have maybe 4 liters of new formalin I have yet to use, so whoever wants it, PM me for my # or my AIM SN and uh, we'll arrange something, I guess. You can have it free, or you can donate to the ziptree-needs-a-new-slowspeed fund if you feel like it. First come, first serve.

You'll all meet your big sibs during orientation or maybe the second week you guys are there. I know the ASDA Welcoming Committe Chair and we're planning out an event for you guys to meet everyone, so don't trip. We (well, the 1st years really...er, now 2nd years. =P) haven't forgotten about you. There's plenty of time to talk to everyone else...8, 9 hours a day for the next two years at least.

*end 1:40am advice; back to studying again*

Oh, and if anyone has any more questions, PM me and I'll give you some contact info. SDN is too distracting to check that often. *cough* Dr. Hobie, and my dear little sib, jk5177 *cough*

Thanks ziptree,
I actually wanted to make sure about the autoclaving, or else I couldn't use those perio docs, so I emailed a Dr. Andy Wong at UCLA, who I was told to contact w/ questions about tooth collecting. He told me that autoclaving is actually ok, as long as it is steam autoclaving (and not dry autoclaving which dessicate the teeth), and as long as there's no amalgam in the teeth (because of the potential to release mercury).

Luckily for the perio docs do steam autoclaving. 👍

I have a problem. I don't have any health insurance and I need to do all that immunization stuff. Does anyone else have any advice on how to take care of it w/out insurance??? What is the cheapest way to do it? Because the UCLA student insurance doesn't kick in until school starts and it said in the letter we had to have it all done by Sep. 20.

I went to UCLA to get it taken care of. If you have access to the school, I think this is the best option. They take care of everything, bill our BAR account, and even send it to the school of dentistry for you.

You might also wanna ask Dr. Wong if they'll be OK for endo, not just his class (Operative Dentistry)...you have to be much more fickle about endo teeth.

you don't need insurance through UCLA.

They were all informed of us...so just call "Scheduling Dept phone # 310-825-4073", tell them you're an incoming dental student, and that you need to make an appointment for health clearance. If they can't find you on the system, tell them that you're "not entered" in YET, so they'd have to manually enter it in.

If you still have trouble, PM me and i'll give you another contact info.

It'd be best to do it at UCLA. =) W/o insurance, it's $30 for the first nurse visit...pretty decent...i think. ^_^

It's actually $30 for the visit only...any bloodwork, lab work, and immunizations cost extra.

Question for CPR Certification...

I was looking into it all and I found an online course for 40.00 (and it says its the one for healthcare providers) and it seems soo freaking easy.

Does anyone know if this will work/not work. Seems a little too good to be true...

The link is http://www.cprtoday.com/

I suggest you guys check it out.

I don't think SHIP (the UCLA student insurance) covers immunization. I am not 100% sure.

That may or may not be acceptable. My CPR class had four components (1) short lecture (2) video demonstration (3) hands-on practice scenarios and (4) written test. Not sure if #3 is required. You may be able to find more affordable CPR courses via craigslist.org.

Sounds like a really good idea and a huge time saver! Please let me know if the school will accept this or not.

I'd ask Student Affairs...last time I checked for online courses, they were only re-certification, which UCLA makes you do with your class...good deal though if it'll work!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

LOL...i was thinking so too...but then...if we "happen to fail" at this, we'd end up exhausting our energy INSTEAD. LOL. (how about sleeping in everday just to make up the hours for fall???? 😉 )

-- now that's a very productive summer plan!!! 😛

i used to have my CPR done for only $25, but that was 3 years ago...and another one done for only $30...and it was an 8 hour session i believe.

...mine doesn't expire til 2007...but i guess i would have to still get it this summer as well. 🙄 hehe

For my fellow bruins who are still purchasing laptops or other electronics,

I was looking through a laptop forum and reading something on warranties when i stumbled on some welcome info. Some might know this already, but for those who don't, I found out that for pretty much all electrionic devices that come with manufacturer warranties, if you make your purchase with a AMEX card they will double the warranty up to 1 year (i.e. 90 days = 180 days, or 3 years = 4 years) 😱 . The "buyers assurace" is only compatible with manufacturer warranties and not merchant ones.

It works for pretty much everything, even some non electronic stuff, but not cars or airplanes or motorcycles (hopefully no one is buying this stuff just yet), and can insure up to like $10,000.

I called and found out about 95% of AMEX cards work, so you might want to make sure of you card before you try it (I have a costco amex).

So before you buy your cell phones, ipods, or PDAs, or laptops take a look at these links. 🙂

buyers assurance
warranty pdf file
where i found the info, works for some other cards, but AMEX seems best

And here I thought AMEX was useless...

Seems like the maximum extension you can get is 1 year (since most places only have a 1 year warranty on laptops anyways). And even if you purchase additional protection, AMEX won't extend their protection.
"If you buy an additional service contract or an extended warranty for a computer, computer component or part that already comes with an original U.S. Manufacturer’s warranty, unless such coverage is provided from and
administered by the original manufacturer, coverage under the Buyer’s Assurance Plan does not apply."

Good catch, though. Things start happening to laptops during 2nd year when you start using fire and cool stuff in lab....mmmm....carcinogenic!

Hey everyone!
hope everyone's having a nice break!

I'm having some issues with housing 🙁 ...I'd originally requested to move in on September 15, but I really want to move in earlier (currently living at home, and going crazy). Is there anyone who would like to switch move in dates with me? Please let me know! I don't really care when as long as it's earlier. Please let me know!
thanks 🙂

Yea, the AMEX lady from the buyer assurance program basically told me they only extend warranties done through the original manufacturer. I told her I was going to get a Thinkpad Laptop w/ a 3 year warranty, and she said as long as I buy the extended warranty through lenovo they'll add 1 year to make it a 4 year warranty. Claims in the 4th year need to be made to AMEX though, and not levono i think. So none of the warranties given buy Circuit City, or Best Buy, or other resellers will work, just ones by original manuracturers. Hope that makes sense.

Contact the housing office: 310-206-7011 or www.housing.ucla.edu/ask

You should have no problems changing your move-in date.

When I called housing they were so freaking rude to me... They were not helpful whatsoever....

INFO ON ONLINE CPR: I was emailed back by noemi and she said the online stuff works fine. So, I am DEFINITELY going that route.

Also, WHEN DO WE FIND OUT WHO OUR ROOMATES ARE!?!?!?!?

Yeah, housing was pretty rude to me as well. Housing will email you your apt address and roomate's email.

Thanks, but it's $61 for the book + the course. I don't think you can sell me a 1v1 CPR course =)

To the people who said housing is rude, I had the exact opposite experience. I went to their office in person while I was touring Weyburn, and they changed my move-in date from August 15 to September 1 in literally 2 minutes or less. No problems at all. Maybe you just caught the wrong rep =/

really???? mine came out to be 200 for just ONE visit. *sighz* iono, she ordered ALL titers for me...even the chicken pox one...i just realized...you don't need that titer if you claim history of it and have it on writing.

i still don't know if i'm cleared yet though. (i called, they said wait till Sept, most likely. so, wait, i'll wait. 😎 )

just to inform all of you, i'm moving to LA TOMORROW and will be moved into weyburn on wednesday. so if anyone is in weyburn, look for me in sycamore court! holla.

Too bad it's not closer if the super secret entrance still works. If it does, then Magnolia is closest. =)

yeah you can pay with a credit card, visa or mastercard. i just paid it this morning.

go to: http://www.housing.ucla.edu/myhousing

and click housing payment

I got my assignment for Weyburn last week. I will be living in Olive Court. My view consists of the VETERANS CEMETERY, since my studio is streetside! Pretty exciting eh? Not!

For those who haven't gotten their housing assignment e-mail yet, it has your roomate info, apartment #, and move-in date (which you should already know).

I also noticed a bunch of U-hauls today, so for anyone that was wondering, I don't think that having a U-Haul will be a hassle. They also set aside the visitor parking spots for the people moving in (but I think they only do this on the 1st and 15th of Aug and Sep).
