For those of you who've already received your housing info. I'm curious to know when you've accepted your housing offer at Weyburn.

I have accepted mine around July 10th but I have yet to receive any further notice regarding my housing unit or info about my roommate.

Thanks and hope to see ya'll in about 30 days!

Hey KAP, is Sycamore the one right across the street from the cemetary?

Jacaranda anybody?

I'm in Olive Court... and my roomie isn't a dental student... He's an Astronomy Grad Student. But it's cool because I know all the planets names and stuff.

Haha mcshow2 you are one funny guy hahahahah..

sycamore court is the very first building on the right when you enter weyburn from gayley and weyburn ave

i got Aloe court....so does anyone know which court gets the cemetery view?

Palm, Jacaranda, and Olive courts. I think Cypress gets a view of it too...but only a few apartments in these buildings face the cemetery.

Hi, there has been many posts about the laptop~~
and I am gonna get a new one for school soon, but still looking around...

I am just wondering what laptop you guys are gonna use??
(brand, model, spec.......etc ??)

I probably will go for a 14" one since the tech person told me it just needs to be fast enough with xp prof.

btw, i paid the initial payment but they haven't told me where i will live 😕
i guess i should give them a call

is it really hard to get into ucla, anyone here get in with less than 4.0?

hey guys for your info: the rooms in the 2 person bedroom apartment are about 10 by 11 feet. there's cable connection, network and phone lines in the bedroom as well (and same connections in the living room). so if you wanna bring stuff to connect to those in your room might be a good idea. just thought you outta know...l8r!

...

HP DV2000t
1) 5.29 pounds with a 6 cell battery (my laptop comes with a 12-cell battery and it's a little heavier)

2) battery run time: 8 hrs 45 minutes w/ 12 cell battery or I think 4 hrs and ?? minutes w/ 6 cell battery

3) pre-installed XP Pro

4) memory: 2 GB

5) 128 MB NVIDIA Graphics Card (Only 32 MB is dedicated << meets the minimum requirement for UCLA SOD)

6) 14.1 inch brightview monitor

7) Intel DuoCore Processor w/ speed of 2.0 GHZ

8) abg network (note b/g 801.11 is not as good because it can't work w/ an A-network)

9) bluetooth

10) IR port w/ an IR remote control which can be stored in the express card slot

11) lightscribe DVD & CD writer

12) built-in camera & microphone

13) memory card reader. I think they call it 5-in-1 reader (SD, I think MMC etc etc Double check with HP)

14) ethernet port

etc etc

"12 months no interest"

HP gave me ~$100-110 discount for UCLA SOD
Another $100 for being nice and price protection
I think I got a few other discounts on top of the above.
I think when I placed the order the price was lower than now.
+ free all-in-one printer (i.e. photocopies, scans and prints)
NOTE: the printer is $79.99. mail-in rebate for printer is $80 but you still have to pay the tax (I think 0.0825 * 79.99). So, you pay the tax but you don't pay for the printer 🙂

EDIT: I forgot to mention the mail-in rebate: $50 for laptop

Amazon.com gave me a good price for Microsoft Office (student & teacher version) >> I think ~$70 including shipping etc etc etc (I had to sign up for amazon.com visa card to reduce the price by $30).

Further info: www.hpshopping.com

NOTE: the laptop doesn't have the type II and III SLOTS but it has an express card slot & I think it has one expansion port 3 connector:

specs:
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...t_series&catLevel=3&tab_switch=true&tab=specs

Slots/ports Expansion port 3 connector
ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
Three USB 2.0
IEEE 1394 Firewire
S-video TV-out
Integrated Consumer IR (remote control receiver)
Two headphones out
Microphone in
RJ-11 (modem)
RJ-45 (LAN)
VGA

Expansion Slot ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)

P.S. I think if you don't like the laptop and you choose free-shipping you can return it within 21 days (@ no additional cost). I think all you need to do is call HP and ask them to come pick it up. To be sure contact HP.

You can get in w/ GPA < 4.0. I think you should apply. If you have any questions send me an email msg: [email protected] Good luck 🙂

The housing office just sent me an email msg regarding "parking permits." I think you must tell them you want to have a parking permit 2-3 weeks before you move in. All you have to do is: go to a web site, select YES and submit.

yes, yesterday I enojyed the view for like 60 seconds (~ 1/60 of the time I spent in LA)

I got a Gateway convertible and love it so far!! (just got it in the mail yesterday)

BTW, if you decide to buy HP DV2000t I think you should at least get a 100 GB hard-drive (free space = ~70 GB; used space = 30 GB).

Has anyone had trouble with their transcripts? I graudated in June, and my final transcript still doesn't have my degree posted yet...they've been extremely slow. Therefore, I haven't sent my transcripts to UCLA yet.

No. I don't watch TV and movies much. Once in a while, short movies, documentaries and the like. HP divides the hard-drive into two partitions: C & D. Partition C is your free space (~70 GB if hard-drive is 100 GB) and D is the used space (~30 GB). The operating system and all the HP applications/programs/drivers/etc are backed up on D. If anything goes wrong with drive C you can restore it (fix it) using partition D. Plus, partition D lets you watch movies and listen to songs/etc without running windows xp. If you want more free space out of the 100 GB hard-drive you must format the hard-drive, reinstall XP, download and reinstall all the drivers etc etc. It can become very complicated & It may or may not work. I tried to do that. One day I was on the phone with HP and microsoft engineers for ~9 hrs and we couldn't do it. So, a 100 GB hard-drive only gives you ~69-70GB.

What do you like to do in your free time? Or are you all about nothing but work (which isn't bad)?

McShow, you are a nice guy but you sometimes ask me weird questions (e.g. meaning of life and the above). I enjoy helping others. As you and others know I've helped many SDNers in various ways ever since I joined the SDN community. I am still helping many students via email messages, the forums (esp. the DAT DISCUSSIONS forum), etc etc. I've taught a few classes too. I usually go way beyond my paid hours to help my students. I've also worked for quite a few non-profit organizations. So, I am all about helping others in any way possible.

That's great to hear and very commendable. The last question wasn't wierd or a joke... I just wanted to know because you definitely seemed to go above and beyond with digging up information and helping others. When I asked you the meaning of life, that was because you seemed to have the answers for everyone's question no matter how big or small... so i thought I'd throw that one at ya.

My degree is also still not posted on my transcript. The UC system is quite slow. My diploma is not ready for pick up until October.

Did anyone else get parking? I wanted structure 9 but got 2 instead.

My grad school is taking for ever to update my final transcript, but I did call the admissions and student affairs office and they said as long as you get it to them before orientation you are ok.

As for parking, I am in lot 2 as well. I've been to the school many many times and have parked at the hospital parking, lot 9 and lot 2, and the difference between 2 and 9 is a matter of a few feet.

Don't worry, both lots are very very close to dent school. Look at the parking map and imagine if you got lot 32?!

I think like $17 a month, heh.

Hah, Mr. Gil. Glad to know you made it here. =)

Lot 2 and lot 9 are pretty close to the school...both are great. And I actually do know someone who got lot 32, so sucks for them.

As for the HP laptop partitioning issue...I don't see what's so complicated about re-partitioning the drive (check out Symantec's Partition Magic), wiping the drive, and re-installing Windows XP...I could give you a hand if anyone needs it.

I think the partition magic even let you re-distribute the free space of your partitions without wiping your data and os. (ex: moving 20GB of free space from C to D) I think I did it before, not totally sure though...

you should have called me up when you were in westwood to do lunch. dont forget next time.

Question for CPR Certification...

I was looking into it all and I found an online course for 40.00 (and it says its the one for healthcare providers) and it seems soo freaking easy.

Does anyone know if this will work/not work. Seems a little too good to be true...

The link is http://www.cprtoday.com/

I suggest you guys check it out.

MCshow, have you taken that online course? That's a really good price. The cheapest I've come across is $50 for course plus an extra 15 for the book.

hey so cal people. is it just me or are so cal folk "hard" compared to us softy nor-cal counterparts. after moving from nor-cal, i notice people here seem different.

"Hard"? Hm....I wouldn't say people in Westwood are 'hard'. Not right now at least. Wait until the college kids come. =P

But you're definately right, the mentality of people here are different from people in NorCal.

i think it's just what happens when you have to deal with traffic. it takes me 30 min to get to costco out in culver city, when google maps says it's supposed to take 9. what exactly is your def. of "hard" anyways?

*and my CPR class up here in San Jose was 45 bucks.

like rude, dirty looks, yell at me for parking so close to their car (when i have no friggin choice). drivers are aggressive, crazy and seems like they dont want to let you change lanes (rather they speed up), its insane!!

additionally, it seems like cashiers there take their sweet ass time as if they don't give a hoots about how long the lines are building up. man, talk about how long i had to wait to pay for my parking permit because the ladies behind the window were having what seemed to be a really good conversation, same thing at the housing office. also it seems parking lots are dirty (people litter all over the place), the street signs, retaining walls have graffiti.

maybe its all bad luck. but there sure seems to be differences. well who knows, maybe its just me cause i get home sick. 😳

yeah i've been to that costco, at least i found the costco but it took me days sitting in the hot afternoon sun (in traffic of course) just to get there (of course im exaggerating.)

welcome to LA. 😎 it's all worth it for the weather though. only other place i'd rather be is SD. too bad they don't have a program there.
