Hello Everyone !.....I really need advice because I have an extremely difficult decision to make . I got accepted in both schools ....I feel very honored by this!
I spoke with some people but I need a fresh perspective on both programs.
How about the patients ?
How about clinic chairs?
Or anything else that may help my decision only I have one extra day.
Thanks

I cannot speak for USC, but as a UCLA student, I can attest to the fact that 1) we have plenty of patients and 2) each student has their own "home" cubicle which they share with another student of a different year. Additionally, UCLA costs considerably less money, has a higher average on the NBDE part I, is a pipeline to a lot of specialty programs, and is generally very strong didactically.

USC does have its advantages though. While PBL is definitely not for everyone, it is a very good learning method that affords the student a lot of freedom and fosters critical thinking. They also apparently have a very good clinical program (while it often seems like UCLA focuses more on the didactic courses).

Another thing to consider is that UCLA is on the pass/fail system. How great would it be to never have to worry about grades again!

Let me know if you have any questions. Though they are vastly different schools, they are both great, so you really cannot go wrong. Congratulations on your acceptances, and good luck with the difficult decision.

Let this weekend's UCLA vs USC game decide your decision. Oh yeah, UCLA will win by the way. 😉

Congratulations!

Viewing financials alone, UCLA may a better choice, especially if you are a CA state resident.

For the 2005-06 school year, USC's cost of attendance for a D1 was over $85,000 and that was when tuition was $55,000. In 06-07, tuition alone is appoximately $58,000. Guesstimating projected cost of attendance for a D1 at USC, 2007-08, the D1 year may well cost over $90,000, if it doesn't already.

Both schools are accredited. With dental school, you and your effort may be much more a factor than the choice of school when it comes to doing well on your boards and graduating on time. Good luck.

Thanks everybody for the time you took for reply this.
I need one more help ....somebody know what are the requirements in clinic?
I will enter to D3 and D4 so patients and dental chairs are so important for me
Thanks again everybody

To graduate at SC you need something like 30 crowns and 10 units of bridge. 8 RPDs and 1 complete denture. Perio is 20 quads, a bunch of re-evals, a bunch of prophy's and 125 or maybe 150 operatives plus a bunch of miscellaneous stuff like extractions (need 20), endo (need 8 teeth).

I posted the 2008 requirements for USC the other day. here is the link http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=4413061&postcount=23

Since you will be entering the international program, PBL will not effect you much at all. For juniors, case is 1x/week for a hour or two. The clinic has some administrative issues with scheduling and stuff, but nothing too bad. Im sure all schools have some issues. The tuition is pricey, but its for 2 years, so it might be 20-30k between the two. But overall, you will get good clinical experience here. Plenty of patients.

side note: I still highly recommend USC for 4 year students, PBL and all. I have seen horror stories lately about people being forced out, abused, overworked, stressed, suicidal, and the like. After 3 years here, the stress level has been minimal (except around NBDE time). USC is expensive, but i think it's worth my sanity. Which reminds me, finals start tuesday, so I guess I cant go out on sunday. 😀

i graduated from UCLA in '06. i don't think there is such a dental school that is perfect. i admit .. UCLA isn't perfect but it has a strong supportive faculty. and the didactics definitely prepare you for boards. (very key if you want to specialize) i preferred to have formal lectures.. for me it just seemed more structured. while others gained more from pbl. but it's all preference. if i had to do it all over again.. UCLA all the way. albeit.. my class was the best.

I think it has been shown that you can rock the boards regardless of the school you attend. Its all a matter of discipline the weeks/months before the test. Decks and old questions make all the difference and not the school you attend. Or at least thats what I think...

i do not doubt that many can do well on boards regardless of the dental school. true, you need to put forth the time and effort. but from my own experience and my class... we had maybe five with 99s, 1 with 98, 2 with 97 and many with 90+. and this is not uncommon. 20/22 matched ortho, 10/12 matched pedo, 5/7 matched endo. 1/1 oral sx, 3/4 perio. i have a friend at usc and they seem just as happy.. so to each his own.

Care to make it interesting?

haha I can't make a bet against our school, I'd feel torn watching the game. There is nothing more I'd like to see than UCLA upsetting SC

You're trying to decide between UCLA and USC? Really?!
