so I got the dreaded and yet, slightly hopeful status of "unranked waitlist." I have a couple questions regarding waitlists in general. (sorry in advance if these are stupid)

1) It says to inform them in writing if you choose to accept this waitlist spot. Am I supposed to write them a letter? And if so, should I make this into a pseudo-LOI as well?

2) If we're supposed to have narrowed our choices down to one school on May 15th, what happens if I get into UCLA afterwards? Is the school we choose on May 15th not binding?

3) This is a general question on apt leases: if I end up signing a lease for an apt near another school, what are the consequences usually to rescind that lease if I end up getting into LA afterwards?

Thanks in advance. Let us UCLA-waitlistees unite and hope for the best in the coming months.

I only know the answer to number 2, and getting off a waitlist is fair game to drop your original May 15th school.

Add me to the list. Now to craft the most amazing piece of writing ever. BTW, did any one who got on the waitlist notice the macro code at the bottom "NHP:1f" Now thats classy lol.

3) For three Im pretty sure you lose your deposit. It's a legally binding contract to my knowledge.

As for 1), I guess we do have to write a letter, probably in LOI form since I don't think they want to pull people off the waitlist who arn't interested in attending. Who knows...

Hi Guys,
Anyone know if there is also a ranked wait-list??
My boyfriend applied to UCLA a few years back and said there was an unranked waitlist and a ranked waitlist.

I would assume the ranked waitlist people get priority.

Just curious.

From last year's thread, there's an unranked (1st priority, people get pulled off this list) and a hold list (equivalent to a rejection). Not sure what this year's plan is.

still could use lots of :luck:

Also for 3):

There is often a penalty of a month or 2 of rent.

Do we have a mole to help us find out more about how the waitlist works? 😉

Alternatively, you can find a month-to-month or 6-month lease apt.

Anyone who was accepted from the waitlist last year or who just knows how this works... when is it appropriate to send the LOI? Can I send in my acceptance of the waitlist position first and then take a little more time to draft my LOI? Should I wait until the quarter ends so I can show them that I'm keeping up with my schoolwork?

And what exactly goes into an LOI? How long should it be?

Do you think it would help to get a letter of support from an MD who's a family friend, or should I get that letter from my PI who already wrote one of my original LORs?

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

Whether you decide to turn it into an LOI is up to you. But you have to be monogamous, meaning only ONE LOI regardless of how many acceptances or waitlists you're on.

I think it is time to revive the waitlist thread, we might as well make the format of the thread similar to those of the past years, I think they would list their names and then put the date of being placed on the waitlist. I'll start us off:

Hey guys,
I just wanted to recommend that you email your interviewers since they represent you to the committee and see if they have any helpful advice. I interviewed with Dr. Fulco and then sent him a letter of interest maybe 2 days before I got my status change. I think it definitely can work! And best of luck!

Pattayapus, I read your MD app link and you're doing great! Congrats!

bump, come on I know there are more waitlistees out there!

Do HOLD people count?

I don't see why not, the other years would have HOLDS counted like this:

The UCLA Waitlist (2006):

Unranked:
Oscar22 (4/10)
cHocoBo118 (3/3)

i'm considering davis, and i'm on the waitlist at UCSD. what about you?

I actually called up the financial aid office a couple weeks ago and they just told me to forward my FAFSA but that I shouldn't worry about filling out their forms because they wouldn't look at them unless I got an acceptance.

What I think is decent about the UCLA waitlist is that they start in early August, earlier than most schools. In my case, I won't have to matriculate at another school before I get a chance to join the cool crowd. Good luck all!

If you've already been accepted to a good school, withdraw from the waitlist so people who aren't in any school yet have a chance. JK 😀

yeah...pretty similar... uci for me. eh. lucky and grateful to be in ca. or to even have a school at all. .. but at the same time.. would be even more lucky and grateful to be in la. i know-greedy greedy me. hopefully we'll all hear good news soon!

Haha, I'm guilty of checking every day too. Realistically, the waitlist won't start moving till after June, so there is a lot more waiting for us!!

I'm on the waitlist "without ranking"- are some other people ranked?

Wow, if there are a 100 people on the waitlist, we've got a good portion on SDN, hopefully a few of us make it!!

Hey everyone as a fellow waitmate I am curious,

If you dont go to UCLA where do you plan on going?

Keck for me

Man, at least you guys are going somewhere in CA. I have to go out-of-state if my CA waitlists don't pull through ... ahhh well, that's life.

This is my only waitlist..and I have no acceptances. So its UCLA or reapply for me 🙄

FYI- I stopped by the admissions office today. Lili says she doesn't expect waitlist movement until late May. The wait continues....

yeah. they didnt give you a specific ranking? I'm ranked 5 out of 100. Everyone after the 100 mark is considered "unranked" unfortunately. sorry.

anyways that was lame. im kidding. theres an "unranked" list and a "hold" list. youre on the good one. dont worry.

shiet. chocobo, you had me worried. you :meanie: :luck: :luck:

any thoughts on the fact that only 2 ppl have posted as withdrawing from UCLA? is it just my overly active insecurity that interprets this as a bad sign....? 🙁

Unfortunately I too noticed that fact

hi guys, sorry if you got excited seeing someone had posted on this thread. no, there hasn't been any movement so far, but a friend told me today that she called ucla and they said they'll be sending out all final letters between june 1 and july 1...so i guess we can stop sitting at the edge of our seats, for 2 weeks at least.

cHocoBo 118 said:
do they mean final letters as in the ones who have yet to hear post-interview? or are these including waitlists as well... cause from my understanding, they will continue to resort to the WL as long as there are spots available in the class... and there is no guarantee that everyone will have made a decision by July 1st.

on another note, there seems to be quite a few SDNers dropping UCLA from the "UCLA class of 2010" thread. Good news for us.

Thanks for the update ChocoBo. While scanning through the UCLA waitlist threads I noticed that those who didnt hear anything post interview (that interviewed in feb & march), and for whom the 6-8 week typical reply time had long since passed, seemed to have a decent chance of being accepted. It seemed that the adcom didnt bother waitlisting them, and instead waited for slots to open up (after may 15th) and then accepted those students. This began to happen at the very beginning of June last year. I wonder if my suspicions could be true...
I know of a student who interviewed in mid to late april, that was waitlisted last week. Its wierd that they havent said ANYTHING to some march interviewees etc...I'm still waiting. no final decision letter sent...
anyone have any thoughts on this or know people in this situation? we still have a chance? Im just tryna eat...

haha, i hope you're not gonna starve over this.

just to clarify what i said before, my friend is also on the waitlist and she called the office today to ask when she could expect to find out, so she could make plans for housing etc, and that's when they told her the june 1--july 1 thing. i don't know whether they actually referred to "final letters," sorry about the confusion, but i think their answer was geared toward people on the waitlist, not people who haven't heard at all. i bet the july 1 deadline is just their goal: they hope that everyone who's accepted by then will attend. if not, you're right chocobo, they'll just keep accepting off the waitlist until all spots are filled.

who knows baloney...i could be totally off...when were u waitlisted? They pull SO MANY kids off the waitlist every year. In the past just under half the class will leave their acceptances as they get pulled off of other waitlists. Id imagine thats 50+ kids they'd need to pull off the waitlist. Which means they'd have to invite even more...maybe 75+ to get those 50 kids....

i think being waitlisted at UCLA is a very good place to be.

oh man, you rock my world if this is true. UCLA still hasn't told me if I'm on a waitlist or not.

Either that or I've got a latent rejection on the way. SWEET.
