Ucla

besides those two big reasons right there...

world renowned reputation
great opportunities for med students to land residencies of their choice.
LA is relatively diverse and can make anyone from any background find a nice place to be comfortable socially.

just a few that popped up in my mind.

Hmm sounds like you are a USC student from your nick😛

Well besides location

1- top reputation- usually ranked in the top 10-15 med schools

2. Cost- cheap if you are a Cali resident.

Yup. That's about it. Far more reasons to go to Keck. 😉

I used to live with UCLA med students, and the best things about the school are, in order, cost, research, contacts, and location. The student body was pretty fractured since nobody really went to class (thier opinions), but they loved being in Los Angeles.

UCLA also recently changed their curriculum and all of the students there seem to LOVE it. It seems to be a blend between the organ-based and problem-based approaches. Although people still skip out on class, I think more people are going now that before. It will be interesting to see how this new curriculum plays out over the long run.

In addition, the immediate surrounding area is very nice. All of the teaching hospitals are excellent and the students there were all very very cool.

USC is also a great school, but the tuition is significantly higher and I think UCLA is ranked higher in just about everything. I think USC is a strong up and coming school though that has excellent qualities to offer as well.

lol. If you've followed my posts, you'll know I'm from USC/Keck. Forgot about the local area around UCLA. That's another great thing about it. I've heard decent things about your new curriculum. Most of my current UCLA friends are 2nd years, and they are basically the forgotten class (last one in the old curric). But we are two very different schools. Anybody who wants to be a academic scientist should go to UCLA.

We don't have to do research 3rd or 4th year. You can do research rotations. There is a 4 week course 4th year called bench to bedside, but I don't know much about that.

Oh, and UCLA isn't Pass/Fail. They do have grades that are turned in and used to determine AOA. Ask any student over there. They try not to tell them for a while.

Are the grades on transcript or are just used to write the recommendation letters for residency app?

What is AOA?

That is a pretty meaningful name...reminds me of something in the Bible about God being both the alpha (beginning) and omega (end)

It's strange how they do it. My information is 2 years out of date, but I assume it's the same with the new curriculum. They have "optional" grading that get's turned into the admin, and they use those grades to find out who the best people in the class are. So you transcript does only say pass or fail, but your deans letter would say exactly what type of student that you are.
