I got a invitation from UCR about an honor university program offered, but not from UCI. Which ones would be a better pick for me to help succeed for med school?

I know that undergrad doesnt matter THAT much as long as I get good gpa and mcat score, but it does still matter right?

As an alum from a UC, I can say that med schools don't really care about honors programs. We premeds think they do because Honors are usually equated with harder work. What medical schools look at is really courseload per term - how many units are you taking each quarter and in what context is this happening in. Taking 19 units per quarter with other extracurriculars is well-regarded, for example. Hope this help!

Eh no. You're gonna have a harder time in a honors program. Just don't do it. Curved classes will not be in your favor, unless you are that genius.

I think an honors program can be helpful by creating closer connections with professors/more diverse research opportunities.

At the same time, those things are things you can do yourself if you be proactive during your undergraduate career. I certainly do know that honors programs are more demanding in terms of time investment (source: friends in campus honor programs).

Having a good GPA and strong extracurricular activities/LOR/clinical experiences/etc. is more important than where you went to undergrad or whether you were in the honors program.

A student with a 3.8 GPA who was not in the honors program would be a stronger applicant than a student with a 3.5 GPA who was in the honors program. Pick the school you think you would be happier at.

I would definitely visit all of the schools you're choosing between to see what the student life is like and how the vibe is on campus.

No No, do UCI. Honors is a sham if med schools your goal. It'll be time consuming and take time away from research/clinical experience. Of course, if you think you'll take something great away form the experience, do it, but if its just for the "Honors" title, no it doesn't matter. UCI has many more opportunities than UCR does in terms of research and experience and degree options. However, I've also heard UCR tends to accept people who go to their undergrad (why? because the Riverside/inland empire community is in GREAT need for physicians. People form the Riverside community or show dedication to rural medicine will often get accepted there from what I learned in my Pre-med club that I was in like last year)

Half of the 50 students at the med school are from UCR.
