Congrats Mikey!
Are you gonna go??
Yeah I'm definitely going. It's my first acceptance so I'm not sure I have a choice anyway, but it was also my first choice among my interviews so I'll be dropping my other waitlists once I get confirmation that I'm in the class.

Mikeyboy.

Woo, Congrats.... Go Bears!!! 👍 👍

The location is absolutely amazing. Love the fact it is linked to the undergrad campus. The medical students there are very hot. That's about all I can think of right now.

Congrats Mikeyboy, BTW.

You are right. I think people should go into things totally uninformed, but happy.

Hey JB. How's the studying going? You feel ready yet? I guess you'd better be considering it's only a couple of weeks away. I'm sure you're gonna tear it up.

Jalby said:

not totally uninformed, but informed about all sides of the issue....i think that's a better way...no school is 100% bad.....and every school has it's downside, true.....but there are positive things about every school too....what's wrong with saying those too? it's just that all most people want to say is the bad stuff....

Facts don't have sides. Unidimensional. What Ken stated earlier is facts. Facts that don't occur at most schools.

Jalby said:

yes they do...facts can put something in a positive light or a negative light...stating only facts that are negative is one way to do it...stating facts that put a school in both a positive and negative light is another way....
is this a big deal to you? you go to usc...why do you care how people view ucsd?
my point in saying all of this is that there are many people on here who ARE going to ucsd...and i understand there are some less than stellar qualities about the school, but taking a cue from how to work in groups, point out the good with the bad....because, in the end, it's still a good school...as are all med schools....i've just noticed you tend to focus a huge amount of negative energy on this particular school....and you'll say because it deserves it...but like i said before, every school has it's bad points...i've heard many things about usc as well....but i've many good things to temper it...and i needed both sides of the story to form an opinion....as you seem to be a good source of information on this forum, i think you should make an effort to point out the good with the bad....as you did a few posts above already....

Jalby
Did UCSD do something to you when you were young? Kill your cat, take away your lunch money, etc.
I think if everyone bands together to support you, you can get through this. Maybe one day you may even live a healthy productive life in which you don't slam UCSD at every opportunity.

Hey, I didn't say one bad thing about UCSD on this thread. And I still havn't. I did lend support to someone who was getting harassed when he stated what he didn't like about it.

As for why I talk so much about UCSD, I really havn't been for some time. Only when people ask about it or something like that.

But how it all started was when I was a TA at UCLA. One of my students was on the interview trail, got one at UCSD and was shocked with what happened to her there. One of those "rumors" about UCSD happened to her. She ended up going to UCSD because she wanted to stay in Cali over all other things. At the same time, there was a guy at wooden who got into UCSD and would have been her classmate. He got in (his only acceptance), went to orientation, and dropped out the second day of school. I was shocked when I saw him in the fall and read him the riot act. I could not believe he had turned down his only acceptance to the school. he said "It just didn't feel like the right place to me."

So I decided to keep in touch with the student (woman) who was going there to see how she liked it. I kept in touch with her for 1.5 years and heard horror stories, which I compared to my roommate who at the time was a 4th year MD/PHD at UCLA. I then found SDN and saw plenty of other people posting the same thing my former student told me. And then when I got to med school and experienced everything I have, I've realized how much worse of a time I would have if those things happened to me.

Simple enough, I state some of the facts so that students know what they are getting into. People shouldn't go there and be absolutely shocked with what they have to go through and think it is like that everywhere. The administration tells them that the class hours they go to is the same as other schools (I think you guys all got that sheet on the interview) which is a blatent lie (UCSD didn't report hours of tests, reviews, office hours, etc, etc, that other schools did) I figure students can make a educated choice and maybe even change things at UCSD if they knew more information.

UCSD does have some great things about it, but it also has a bunch of very bad things about it.

There, you have my story about UCSD. Now, this is the UCSD waitlist thread, and I do feel guilty posting all of that on here, but someone asked why I tell people what I know about UCSD. I do hope all of your guys get in off the waitlist. Since you guys probably didn't want to read what I just read, I'll give you some stuff that you would like to read. This is what you should emphasize if you want to get off the waitlist in your letters:

1. How much you love the spanish clinics and want to serve the underserved. They really pitch this in the interviews, and so you should pitch it back.

2. How progressive their curriculum is in that you can take electives in anything that you want to. It makes you a more well rounded doctor, etc, etc, etc.

3. How the fact that the president of CMA is a teacher at UCSD and teaches a class on medical politics. You want to be involved in politics, and if you get to go to UCSD you will be able to be active in the way medicine treats doctors. Oh, and you are a good republican. This guy has a bust of Bush (the younger) in his living room.

4. How the research opportnuities are endless at UCSD with Scripts and all of the biomed stuff.

That's most of the stuff I cna think of. I think I wrote a longer list in a thread that Bjork started some time back. You can do a search for it.

was he getting harassed about not liking ucsd? i figured it was more of a discussion...but he called it rancid, and you agreed with what he said....
anyway, i'm glad you posted what you just did...it helps those on here a lot i'm sure....because you HAVE been a good source of info...but like i said, good with bad is "fair and balanced".....

Woa...take it easy there guys. Lay off of Jalby. He tends to be more helpful than anything to a lot of applicants on sdn...especially for a med student who probably has better things to do with his time than help premeds. I think he is really trying to be helpful, albeit a little rough around the edges sometimes.

Reader's Digest Version

UCSD
Pros-
Great academic rep/ranking
Good research
San Diego - Beach, wo/men, weather
California School => Cali Residency

Cons-
rumors of competitiveness
rumors of a less than supportive admin
San Diego - homogenous (more so than SF. What I'm used to)
Rising cost of tuition

Whatever anyone said, it's all up to you. What kind of vibes did the school give you? How'd you interact with the students? I personally loved the school, except for one cake-hole who gave me attitude because I used hang with a crowd that didn't vibe well with his religious beliefs.

no one's attacking him....just asking for the good and the bad....i've mentioned a thousand times how helpful he's been, both to me and to everyone on the forum....doesn't mean i can't disagree with him about something.... 🙂
and anyway his post was good...i've never seen those points made about ucsd...should definitely help some people off the waitlist.... :luck:

camstah, btw, i love your avatar. i miss that cartoon...whatever happened to it. they had a whole series where bill the cat got zapped with bill gates and became bill the gates the cat. they continued to rip on bill gates and then the cartoon kinda disappeared...hey...wait a minute...DAMN YOU MICROSOFT!!! 😡 😡 😡

"Starboard ailertuder?.. Starboard ailertuder?... Pardon me. This is the captain speaking. If anybody knows where the Left Starboard Ailertuder is on a DC9, would they please press their call button now."

"What did she want, quantity or quality? If you wanted them big, you should have married the space shuttle.. ya shrew!"

well folks...looks like i didn't get into UCSD...I just saw my status page and it has an update that a final decision letter was sent out yesterday. Since I didn't receive a phone call or an email saying I was let in out of the A pool. I think we all know what that means....

Thank you all for being so supportive.

Don't give up yet. It may not be. It could be just a glitch in the system... ya never know!
You still waiting on Tulane?

Camstah, here's a hint.

Yup, just called and it has been confirmed. I did not make it to the waitlist from the A Pool. So I guess they are no longer playing with my emotions 🙁

-Finch/Rosalind Franklin University Class of 2008?? :scared:

awww...i'm sorry to hear that 🙁 good luck in everything you do!

Yeah I'm still waiting on Tulane but I got into Finch and I have to start planning for school pretty soon. The way Finch is getting reamed on tnese boards...I'm NOT too excited about it. I'd pick Tulane any day over Finch but hey...I gotta do what i gotta do...and right now i gotta go curl up in a corner and cry my eyes out. +pity+ 🙁

Is it crazy for me to consider just doing a post-bac at this point and trying this process all over again. I don't know maybe it's not worth it. I can't help but wonder If I should just try all over again. Darnit!! If I hadn't got that B- in physics... You know what let me stop being silly. I'm going to medical school!!!! How many people can say that!!?!?!?! and watch out cali!! I will be back for residency!

Isn't it scary how I went through about 3 different emotions in that one post? :meanie:

No, it's not scary. I'm accustomed to how a girl's mind works.

In all seriousness, don't do a post bacc. If you're in, you're in. Just do the best you can at your med school and you're money.

I agree, you can't always get what you want, but getting in is all that matters in the long run... and its all up to you to deal with where you are and how hard you will work.

thank you guys for the words of wisdom. that's really sweet of you all. you're right...once you're in you're in...but i do envy all of you who will be basking in the warm cali sun while i'm freezing my booty off come next spring!! 🙂

I think there was a match list posted in the UCSD Class of 2008 thread. It was one of the first few pages. Of course, Eraserhead has half of those posts and now it says "UCI SOM Class of 2008" at the bottom of every other post...

mr reddly

that quote sounds like its from the movie Airplane!

i think at least, that movie that satires all the disaster plane movies in the 70s

Hehe... ya. They ripped some other movies when making "a wish for wings that work". And I might have messed it up a little bit. But you have to say it in your best penguiny Opus voice to get the full effect. 😀

hmmm...i had a little opus stuffed animal...i wonder where it went? it was so cute......

Anyone have ideas how many people are on the UCSD waitlist right now? I'm hoping to hear before I go abroad for summer break in late June, and what concerns me is how they will contact me when I'm away. Seems like the vast majority people received an e-mail telling them to call the admissions office, and maybe a few simply got a phone call. I'm hoping that they can just use e-mail to notify me, as I'll have Internet access while I'm away.

That sure does sound like a good reason to e-mail them telling them how much you would love to be their and would be horrified if you got in and wasn't able to find out.

The Verbalassasin has been accepted to UCSD. Finally off one of these damn waitlists. Got an email dated yesterday. I'm finally in.
