Hey everyone!

Second look is in little over a month. I don't know about you guys, but I'm super excited to see the school again and meet everyone. Even if you're still waiting to hear from other schools, chime on in, and let's talk UCSD!

I too am very excited about visiting UCSD again. I am so excited in fact that my family and I drove over 6 hours this past weekend to check out housing and childcare options on campus. I can't get enough of UCSD. Oh, we also went to the SD Zoo. I recommend it to everyone.

Hello everyone, I too am excited about second look. Does anyone know if they expect attendees to find their own lodging? Or will we able to spend the night with student hosts?

what's up potential future classmates, hope to see some of you guys there. if people (for some reason) can't find a place to stay, you are welcome to hang with me at my place down here in SD.

I called and asked BZ this question a few days ago, and he said they'll be matching us with current students within the next few weeks. He said you can go and make plans to stay wherever you want, but they will be providing student hosts if you don't make other plans. I'm going to go with the student host option. Sounds fun to me.

Dr. K told me they will be handing out merit scholarships starting at the end of this month. That'd be reallllllly awesome!

Wow! Glad you're so excited!

Sorry I just found this thread... Hello everyone, and congratulations! In case you haven't already met me over in the secondary thread, I'm a first year med student at UCSD. I'm also involved in planning Second Look, so please let me know if you have any questions about it!

We need more representation in the UCSD Class of 2013 thread! Won't be able to make it to second look, but hope you all have a great time. :0)

won't be able to make it to 2nd look either but have decided to withdraw from other schools and will be heading to san diego this summer! look forward to meeting you all!!

Hooray - I am super excited to meet you in the fall!

You and I interviewed on the same day if I remember correctly. Look forward to seeing you in September!

2nd Look in 2 weeks!

Why don't we have a facebook group like everyone else by this point? Some one get on it!

I wish this group weren't private. I'm not 100% sure yet either, and requesting to join or even to see the group makes me feel like I'm being forced to commit (despite the fact that I am heavily leaning towards UCSD).

Hooray - I am super excited to meet you in the fall!

We actually met on my "unofficial 2nd look" back in Jan. You did such a good job convincing me to come 😛

Yessir! Who knew all our subsequent interviews would turn out to be moot 🙂

Oh!! Your first name starts with H?

By the way, I have a classmate with the same first name as you who was totally mad that I didn't introduce you.

I am so happy that you're coming - it was a pleasure to meet you!!

There needs to be more action in this thread.. is nobody excited about UCSD? Understandable actually.

Did anybody get an confirmation for their second look RSVPs? I sent mine a few days late and I'm wondering whether I will be "on the list."

Tell you the truth, I am kind of looking forward to the La Jolla life.. westwood has taken its toll on me. I've visited UCSD a few times back in ugrad (seeing friends for their Sungod festival) and it was a pretty sweet deal.

Silverlining.. is second look going to be lame? Like is it going to be a bunch of ice breaker games where we go around say our name, where we are from and what our favorite movie is? i have this sinking feeling that it's going to be a total let down and awkward at best.

Oh no! I hope it isn't a let down! There will be a talent show, food (including a potluck put on by us!), a hopefully funny and informative presentation from my classmate and me, some small group discussion time, happy hour with faculty and alumni...

But yeaaah my second look experience was kind of awkward (you know, all the annoying small talk). I hope this year will be better!

I am not sure if Brian has been sending out confirmations for second look RSVPs. However, as long as you RSVP before this Sunday, you should be totally fine. If you want, you can PM me your name and I will look to see if you're on the list (you probably are... Brian is really organized). You can also email him to confirm, if you like.

I replied to Brian right away, and I haven't received my host yet either. I assume we'll get it this week.

I'm super excited for 2nd Look! I wish medical school started tomorrow.

I'm doing the hosting assignments =] You should get your assignment by Monday. You actually already have a host assigned, n3opologist, but the latest batch of acceptees were given until this Sunday to RSVP, so I'm waiting on them.

I'm glad to know I'm taken care of!

Silverlining, did you ever call up and ask for a financial aid estimate before it was given out? If so, did that estimate come close to what they actually gave you?

I'm thinking about calling to get one in a week or so...but if it's going to be completely off, then there's really no point.

I'm sorry, I didn't apply for financial aid last year =/ I know you said you can't make it to Second Look, so I will ask around for you.

Penguick,
I am interested as well. I will do some investigating and if I find anything out I will post it.

I am in Penguick's situation as well: accepted, interested in getting a financial aid estimate, and unable to attend Second Look. Hope you & Silverlining can find out some useful information! Thank you so much in advance!

Silver, are you serious about the costume party? Would you be disappointed if I didn't wear one? I'm just not that clever, and that seems pretty odd considering we will all have just met each other.

You say that Saturday is casual dress. What about Friday?

Come on man, try a little harder... It says the entire weekend is casual dress in the email you got a few hours ago. And yea about the costume party... haha this just confirms my belief that this second look is going to be hilariously awkward.

Oh yea everybody, you know what is bull****? I learned that those of us who want to live on campus will not be able to choose our roommates for some odd reason. My entire goal of second look was to find some cool people that would make chill friends/roommates/classmates but nooooo the UCSD housing people had something else in mind. Maybe I will live off campus after all. I am pretty damn pissed.

edit: My mistake... apparently the red bolded casual attire statement towards the bottom only applies to the party or so it seems. Whatever though, the entire weekend has to be casual. Do you really think they would allow casual attire for the alumni/faculty happy hour, yet require your finest tuxedo and monocle for the extravagant 40th' Anniversary talent show, which is right before the party where the suggested attire is "a Lego brick?" I really doubt it.

Try harder man!!! Ha ha. Yah it seems casual all weekend, but I don't want to end up being the only guy not wearing slacks. The monocle would be pimp though.

Here's what I think. The MS1 and 2s need to provide costumes for us.

That housing thing is pretty crappy. I got the same email. I stayed with a host for my interview in grad student housing at Miramar, and to say the least, it reminded me of a dorm. I'd prefer off campus anyway. I plan on meeting some cool people too. Looks like many of us will be going off campus.

I agree that this 2nd look is going to be pretty funny.

Well, you can wear whatever you want... so yeah, you could come in normal clothing. We'd still look at you and say "What the... no crazy getup?" It's meant to be very flexible - I understand that some people won't feel comfortable going all out with people they don't know. On the other hand, some people will welcome the chance to show their stuff. You're already admitted, so as long as you don't do anything stupid (i.e. show up wearing only whipped cream, or getting drunk and puking on Brian), you're fine from our vantage point.

I have learned that life is only awkward when you make it awkward. Think about, say, asking a total stranger about their penile discharge. Or having to see your hook-up every day at school/work. Go with the flow. Try to enjoy yourself. 🙂

Yeah, the whole weekend is casual. You might not want to wear your ripped muscle shirt and dirty gym shorts to the alumni event, but you know, it's your call. Jeans are totally acceptable, and collars are not required.

But I would LOVE to see someone wear a monocle.

I'm sorry to hear that. I have to say though that off-campus housing is nicer (and not really much further, especially considering the free shuttles)... I guess that's the silver lining (haha) to the situation.

Edited to add that I met my roommate at Second Look. If you don't get to do that, though, we open up a housing forum so that people can chat and make arrangements.

Aww, a costume party would've been fun. They do that in England for the freshman to get to know each other and let their guard down.

I'm probably going to live off campus too. Can probably find something better and cheaper that way...plus I don't mind driving 15 or so minutes to class in the morning.

That is pretty darn funny. Poor Brian, he'd be so nice about it too.

You have guilted me into the costume thing. I have a great idea.

You all should definitely take pictures for a scrapbook or something later on.

There are many shuttle routes - maybe you don't have to drive at all! www.ucsdbus.com

I landed in SD tonight and am crashing on silverlining's futon for the next couple days 🙂 Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hey, the reputation points are gone, but you still have a 10yr member icon... Oddly, I have one too, but I didn't yesterday.

And hey, all you SDNers... please introduce yourselves to me at Second Look! Both shemarty and I are excited to meet you. If it isn't already obvious who I am, I'm the person who's been sending you all the emails, so you should know my name... and I'll be introducing myself and giving tours/presentations during Second Look. See you all soon!

hey silver..u said hi to nk for me didn't u 🙂

I learned that n3opologist is pronounced "anthropologist"!

I learned that n3opologist is pronounced "anthropologist"!
Me too... I always thought it was "neopologist", like someone who studies things that are new!

It's been lovely meeting you so far 🙂

Oh really....I always thought it was neopologist too. Hope everyone is having fun.

Silverlining1, her classmates, and the UCSD administration did an awesome job organizing 2nd look!

2nd Look was awesome! It definitely exceeded my expectations. Good job silver and all the other UCSD people!

It was nice to meet all you sdners. For a while I thought the school had an extra "N" on the end (UCSDN).

2nd look was exhausting. I took a nap and I'm still beat. Too bad I didn't bother to figure out anyone's SDN alias while I was there...

Definitely awesome though.

I agree, Second Look was awesome! The current students and incoming class are all very intelligent and lots of fun to be around. I gather that I would be extremely happy living the next 4 years of my life in SD.

Got accepted today and will definitely be attending! Wooooooooooooooooo!
