I wouldn't say the new curriculum is necessarily going to be more awesome than the current one, but that's a matter of opinion and style, I think 🙂

And the new housing will be available second year... but I think off-campus is pretty awesome.

To all,
I spoke with several MS1s at second look and asked them whether the financial aid estimate they received was anywhere near what they actually got. They all said that the estimate was spot on except one who said that the actual award was better than the estimate. I called the financial aid office today and after they verified that my materials were in my packet was handed off to the director. I was told that it would take a week to receive an estimate (I assume via email). I hope this helps those people considering whether it is worth their time calling in.

Can't get to sleep so I just wanted to post again how freakin' excited I am to get accepted to UCSD. I have to start the process of withdrawing from other schools but it feels sort of like breaking up with a high school boyfriend. Do I go the whole "its not you - its me" route or the "there's someone better out there for us" route?

Bummed that I got accepted too late to go to 2nd look, but still grateful none the less!

ANyone know what the likelihood of campus housing is? I know silverlining prefers off campus, but I'm just interested in a cheap place to live!

Yay!!

I don't know what the likelihood of getting campus housing is - it seems to fluctuate from year to year. I think your chances will be better than mine, since One Miramar should be emptying... though I am not too sure on housing policies. (I can PM you the email address of our Graduate Student Association rep - he knows more than I do.) The cheapest housing you can probably get is Mesa, which isn't the most attractive from the outside, but surprisingly spacious on the inside. My advice is to get on the waitlist now!

As for the "breakup"... I'd be coy and just say "Thanks for the offer, but SEE YA."

(I think it's totally fine to not offer a reason... when I withdrew, I just said "Thank you very much for the opportunity. However, I would like to withdraw my application at this time.")

I got this in part of an e-mail from the housing people about a week ago. Who knows if it's accurate:

Currently, the average wait for each of our communities is:

Coast – 2 - 2 ½ years

La Jolla del Sol – immediate vacancies available

Mesa Residential – 3 years

One Miramar Street – immediate vacancies available

Single Graduate Apartments – immediate vacancies available

If cheap is your chief concern, I think the single graduate apartments are only like $450 or something. If that e-mail is accurate then it shouldn't be too hard to find something on campus.

THanks so much for the info!

Just got the email with all the acceptance stuff. Its nice to have it in writing so I can stop wondering if its a mistake.

Has anyone emailed the Financial Aid Office for an estimate and gotten a response?

Has anyone emailed the Financial Aid Office for an estimate and gotten a response?

I asked for an estimate last Friday, and I haven't heard anything yet. The only confirmation I have received from them is the completion of my financial aid application.

I asked for an estimate either last Monday or Tuesday (can't remember which) and haven't heard anything back yet.

Thanks guys! Good to know that we're all on the same boat.

By the way, anybody want to give a nice detailed summary of Second Look? I am especially interested in hearing about the best costumes from the weekend... Did Silverlining dress up as Willy Wonka while showing you guys around UCSD's medicine factory? And Shemarty? And n3opologist? Details!

Lol, I didn't do anything remarkable 🙂

I got a response from the finaid office on monday, but I emailed them at 9 AM the previous monday. They have a lot of people in queue right now (I presume the other med students knew about the estimate already and got in line before us 😛). That being said, I got a very large grant/scholarship, very nice surprise. Never thought I would be happy about ~100k debt, but I was expecting closer to 200k.

That's nice that they got back to you so soon, and I'm glad to hear that the state isn't so broke that it can't give out grants. Good for you!

When you emailed them, did they acknowledge your email? I'm wondering if I should call to make sure they got my request?

UCSD is quite generous with their need based aid, I'm happy to report! +1 for the happy camper crowd 🙂

Just wanted to reiterate how freaking excited I am about UCSD. Many times I'll just be sitting there and then I remember that I'm going to UCSD and I just smile. I'm having one of those moments now and I just thought I'd share.

Woo!😍

Did anyone who emailed the Financial Aid Office a few days after Brian's email came out get a response? I imagine that the line for getting estimates is long, but am just trying to see how things are progressing. Thanks!

Has anyone received any information on merit aid or scholarships? If I havent heard anything by now does that mean I probably will not get one? For those who already received their financial aid packages, did it include scholarships and grants or only need based grants? Does anyone know if UCSD gives out many scholarships?

I still haven't received an estimate for need based aid, and it's been 2 weeks. However, I did receive an email this morning from Dr. Kelly for a 5k/year merit based scholarship. So, they must be separate notifications.

So it's 100% keck for you?

Yep. It was really hard to withdraw, especially after how nice Dr. Kelly has been to me.

Are you 100% UCSD?

Yeah, I can't turn down that in-state tuition and after second look, I like UCSD much more than UCLA for a variety of reasons (as if I was getting off the waitlist...)

I'm sad to see you go, and it was great to meet you, but I'm happy that you'll be at a great school close to your support network 🙂

In case you guys aren't still browsing the secondary thread, apparently 100 post-interview rejections went out yesterday 😱 This was a big surprise to me. Perhaps Brian and the adcom read the complaints on here about having a big, vague acceptable pool 😉

So, enjoydrywax, are you thinking about UCSD even if you get off UCLA's waitlist?

So, enjoydrywax, are you thinking about UCSD even if you get off UCLA's waitlist?

Oh definitely. My attachment to UCLA strictly comes from wanting to be as close to my home as possible (it was very very convenient during my ugrad here), but in terms of everything else I think UCSD takes the cake.

All the med students I met at second look were just as enthusiastic about their school as anybody I talked to at UCLA and honestly I think the H/P/F would keep me on my toes (what's this? a pre-med who doesn't want pass/fail?). I am too prone to slacking and procrastination. Also I think HPF would help prepare me for the boards, because I can definitely see myself falling into a "just do what I need to do to pass" mentality.

Also it seems like UCSD has way more lecture time and way less PBL-esque type stuff than UCLA. I think this is a total advantage since I plan on never attending lecture (studying on my own time) and won't have to waste too much time in these small group BS low-yield activities.

UCSD has a plethora of research opportunities and I cant see much of a difference between UCLA when it comes to this criterion. Sure maybe they have slightly more NIH money (??), but from what I read UCSD's research is just as, if not more, hard hitting than anything going on at UCLA.

The UCSD clinical training is hands down the best you can get. Down in SD there is no competition for medical training. UCSD is the only medical school in the county so all opportunities are ours. With LA, there's competition between USC/UCLA/whatever and honestly I don't want to deal with that. Lastly, I remember a few med students at UCSD mentioning that all residency directors know that UCSD graduates are clinically competent and can throw down come internship and residency. Some were even commenting that UCLA students are still pretty "soft and mushy" in terms of clinical aptitude, but I don't know if there is any truth to this. Point is, I will come out of UCSD as a rock solid clinician and I think that's a great thing.

Finally, location is huge for me and as far as I am concerned it seems like the La Jolla beach life is for me. Besides I spent four years here in westwood already, I could use some change. As far as I am concerned, La Jolla >>>>> Westwood.

edit: I just want to add that I now understand why people would pick UCSD over UCLA (given they have both options in hand). It's just a different feel/attitude down there and it's one of those subjective "fit" things. If you plan on doing residency in california like I do, the difference between UCSD and UCLA is absolutely negligible.

Is that why you JUST posted in UCLA thread saying "Hey guys I am currently writing a letter of update/letter of intent "

Now why would you be writing a letter of intent if you would choose UCSD over UCLA? 🙄:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Guess that should say letter of interest.

MJ is KING, ever since you got accepted to UCLA you have been riding around on your high horse. I could go through your post history and show you white-knighting UCLA in just about every thread (for example this one right here), but I have better things to do. What was the point of you even posting in here? Its good to know that you are keeping tabs on the UCSD thread 🙄

I just want people who actually have the blessing to choose between these two schools to have the correct information and not misguided BS. I can also go through your post history and I found you said "nobody turns down UCLA, its a blessing from God... you will regret it if you do so." This along with the fact that YOU are still on the UCLA thread asking about Letters of Intent is reason enough to have you clarify your position for the sake of other people.

And yes, I have the right to be on the UCSD thread because I was accepted and they are giving me much more free money than UCLA. Therefore, I can actually comment accurately on having to make this choice.

GO BRUINS!

Hey, just wondering if anybody has heard back from UCSD about financial aid. I am still waiting for them to process (?) my stuff..

They give out a fair share, more than any other school as far as need based aid goes. But remember it is just that, need based aid, if your family is well off, don't expect too much. I think n3opoloigist was offered a merit aid scholarship of 5K a year. That's all I've heard regarding MERIT based aid.

I don't want to get too involved in this SDN Feud, but I would like to post a quick commentary.

I think you guys both have good points:

MJ is KING - UCLA and UCSD are both great schools, you can't blame enjoydrywax for wanting to gain acceptance to both schools, especially since he has family ties in LA. Using old posts against him is a bit unfair, because opinons change throughout this process. In December, I too was drueling over UCLA. Top Ten school, PBL, city of LA.. etc. The pre-med in me thought UCLA was absolutely unmatched. (well except for UCSF) As I learned more throughout this process and by talking to medstudents and residents I realized how unimportant ranking differences are among the top 20. I also realized that PBL is not for me and I discovered that San diego is an amazing city. UCSD also threw a lot of money at me. So even though I too may have at one point in the past declared UCLA the greatest thing since toast, I now have a drastically different view and think the two schools are much closer than I originally expected.

enjoydrywax - As MJISKING said, he has been looking at this forum, because he is an accepted student. Heck I've glanced over a few threads of schools where I am not accepted. Also, I can see how MJISKING would deem your post comparing UCSD and UCLA disingenous after reading that you had recently sent a Letter of Intent to UCLA. Granted you stated that this was a mistake, but that was unbeknownst to MJISKING at the time. And I will admit it is hard to belive that you are 100% leaning toward UCSD if you will put forth the extra effort to send in LOIs to UCLA. UCLA has stated that they don't take LOIs into account much since they assume they are the top choice of all of their applicants.

In the end both are great schools and I would be EXTREMELY happy at either. Both have pros and cons over the other. In the interest of full disclosure, I am currently accepted at UCSD and WL at UCLA. And the decision between the two would be an extremely difficult one if it came down to it.

I have great difficulty imagining that UCLA would match UCSD's aid. They are really making this less financially burdensome on me, for which I am eternally grateful (especially since I dont have any form of parental fallback).

First off, thank you Cellar Door for your post. That was very eloquently stated. I couldn't agree anymore.

Chessknt87, I do not presume to know what your exact situation is, but I have seen your posts and feel that we are in very similar circumstances. With that said, I have received my financial aid package from both schools and must say that they are in fact comparable. After all, the cost of living will be a bit higher in LA. I think that all of the UC's are having financial problems, most stemming from the state's current situation, but also believe that they are willing to help finance our education to the best of their abilities. For those who have received generous offers from any school (specifically UCSD since this is their thread), congratulations!

Good luck everyone! I'm sorry that I can't be your classmate next year, but UCSD still holds a very special place in my heart. Silverlining will take care of you guys! 🙂

Quick Question

On the UCSD housing website One Miramar is about $1200 a month. I just want to make sure that this price is for each person in a two bedroom? Or is it for the entire apt., meaning you would split with the cost with a roomate?

I remember receiving an offer to live in One Miramar (2br) for $600ish/month. So the $1200 is for the whole place, not one person.

silverlining: just curious...why did you decide not to take the One Miramar offer?

I had already found another place to live and I didn't want to bail on my roommate (there was only one vacancy available). Luckily finances weren't an issue. And I got this notification in late September.

Anyone know if you can live in on campus housing year round? At my undergrad, you couldn't stay during the summer, and I'm sick of moving every year.

Yes, you can live there all year round. It works a lot like a regular apartment complex (you even have to set up your own internet and electricity). And you can sublet the apartment during months you won't be there (like during the summer).

Yea that was only for dorms. Apartments work like real apartments (ie you are responsible for paying electricity, you can stay/go as often as you want, have to clean it yourself, put in work orders etc).

I just got a housing offer from Single Graduate Apartments. I'm not sure how it works at the other complexes, but at Single Grad the rent is $468 and includes all the utilities, even internet/cable. Not a bad deal if you ask me, although the rooms are kinda small.

Yeah, Single Grad Apartments are a little different since they are actually on campus. The building is in a complex with undergrad freshmen dorms, which can be a downside for some. Also, if you have a car, on campus parking can be expensive. But other than that, SGA is a really good deal in terms of cost, especially compared to One Miramar, which is more than 600/month.

I decided against single grad because the rooms are small and furnished (I like my desk and big bed thx) and you have to share a bathroom/kitchen with 4 people. Ive done that before and it isnt too fun, esp if everyone knows how to cook.

Yeah I know what you mean. I probably won't take the offer from single grad. chessknt, are you pretty much settled on sd?

So Chessknt87, are you doing off campus or trying to get One Miramar?
