UCSD Fall 2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not necessarily true. Tuition, yes. Living, no. Living in LA is not that bad. I think La Jolla and San Francisco rank pretty high in living expense. Calculating a commuter to USC and someone renting for the UC's, you would have a difference of ~20k in favor of the UC's. Not 100k that "half the tuition" would suggest.

Well, I can't speak for SF...but I go to UCSD for undergrad and my brother goes to UCLA for undergrad (like 30 minutes away from USC)...and the living expenses are higher in LA.

Good to know that 30 people get pulled off wait list, I wonder how many people are wait listed!

LOL. That's your mistake. I went to UCLA and yes WESTWOOD is expensive. It's hardly East LA where USC is located. Pasadena can be expensive but Alhambra is pretty decent. Either way you're driving to school, unlike UCLA where you can pretty much walk since there is relatively no parking.

LOL. Ok my bad.

Waitlisted, dated 3/6, received today.

Good to know so many have gotten pulled off the waitlist in the past--but I'm also wondering how many people are waitlisted versus rejected after interviews.

Did those who got accepted and sent their acceptance form received anything else from UCSD so far????

No, i dont think we'll receive anything until after the acceptance deadline. I believe in may or so is when they will send us our acceptance package with a lot more info.

I was waitlisted in early March just like the other waitlisters.

Nobody else seems to be posting results. Is it because UCSD hasn't made final offers yet or is it just because no one wanted to post their results? The UCSF thread has been exploding and I figured SF and SD would be on the same schedule so I'm a little curious as to what's going on.

Well, its a lot different for UCSD. With a smaller class (half the size), the probability of getting accepted is halved. Probably a number of people have been waitlisted, but the waitlist shouldn't be too long. Overall, you'll have less conversation. I think once the deadline for response for the UCs is over (April 10th), you'll start hearing waitlist movement posts.

Uh...we didnt have to send in a deposit, right? Because I never got anything about a deposit. I just wanto be 100% sure because I am paranoid and will die if I get kicked off the list for some reason...
Please respond!!!!

Ucsd requires no deposit to hold position.

When I called the woman I spoke to warned not to expect the waitlist to move until summer. Since the response deadline is 4/10, I'm not sure if this means they traditionally get a lot of people who accept (since there's no deposit) and then decline closer to the start of term, or if very few people have been declining this year compared to previous years, or if she saw something on my profile that screamed "low priority candidate", or if she just wanted to save me the stress of checking my e-mail every 10 minutes, or if the admissions committee isn't planning to meet to review the waitlist until spring semester ends, or something else.

She also said they'd likely make offers via e-mail, so make sure they have your correct e-mail!

I was never taken off the waitlist nor updated on my status at all from last year... I still to this day do not know how "close" I was. (They don't rank you on the waitlist, but re-evaluate all waitlisters when there is an opening).

I was completely rejected this year, and I have recently become very curious at finding out about my waitlist last year. I even had a dream that I was actually accepted , but they were unable to contact me in time... (I am placed on hold at usc/uop and waitlisted at ucsf - a bunch of anxiety is in me)

I just found out I got accepted off the alternate list via email! Letter dated April 7. YAY! :soexcited:

Congrats! I wonder if UCSD has the same deadline as UCSF for replying to their acceptance offer... is it April 10th ?

UCSD has the same deadline as UCSF, April 10. I guess that they already had a lot of people rejecting their offers if I was given an offer from the alternate list? I'll keep my fingers crossed for the rest of my alternate listers!! :xf:

Congratulations on your acceptance, hydango! That's pretty awesome. Thanks for letting us know that the alternate list has had some movement.

Congrats on getting into UCSD! Just curious, are you guys going to go there? I am a UCSD undergrad and I regularly talk with students at the pharm school and it seems like a lot of people are not happy here. I think it's unfortunate that UCSD has this problem - even a lot of the undergrad students dislike UCSD. UCSD is a great research school but I wish they would just do more to make it a better environment for their students.

Congrats again!

what are u talking about? I LOVE UCSD and im an undergrad graduating this june. its what u make of it, and idk why people dontl ike this school, if u dont have fun and not social of course ur not gonna have fun. i hit la jolla beach almost everyday, and attend athletic games, and etc. you have to make it fun. you can go to ucla and not be happy too? but if u dont go out from ur study room, and attend games, explore the city and etc then its gonna be not fun, just like uci and ucr, and any school. ITS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT! and YES ucsd is a bomb research school and its top 10 public school and one thing im proud of is that the athletic team is top in division II BUT no one give scholarship, and they all got in the same we all did-by grades, sat and etc. so in the classroom we have competition, and its good 👍

Hey, congrats on graduating! I'll be graduating from Revelle just June as well. I'm glad you had a good time at UCSD and for the most part so did I. But do you ever realize a lot of kids are not happy here? I know it's what you make of it but why does UCSD have this problem every year? I don;t think it's a coincidence that many students complain about UCSD every year. Yes, it's ultimately up to the students to make a fun place but why is it like this every year? Because of this, the school is also responsible as well.

The deadline April 10 has just passed. How many people declining UCSD offer?
Please let our alternat list people know.
I really wanna attend UCSD pharmacy school.

Hi everyone, just letting you all know that I was recently accpeted by USC and will be going there. So I will be turning down my UCSD spot. Good luck to you all!

I just declined my offer to UCSD as well. It was very tempting (esp. financially), but the location is not ideal for me and my bf. Tough decision! Good luck everyone 🙂

Thanks for letting us know!

I called the admissions office today and they couldn't tell me any updates about the alternate list because the deadline for accepted students was last Friday. She said that there might be updates at the end of this week. =/

thankss... so far 2 persons are declining.
Do you have any idea how do they choose alternate list people since there is no ranking number?
How many people are on the A. list?
best of luck for those waiting just like me...

I'm declining my spot too. Just heard I'm in at USC!!!

Did anybody else read this article?

http://www.sdbj.com/industry_articl...46.1807934.36604602.678&lid=&sid=&cid=&page=1

What do you think this means for the upcoming classes?! What happens if the school loses accreditation?

I read this awhile back too. It sounds scary, but I looked up things about UCSF too (http://pharmacy.ucsf.edu/news/2008/07/25/3/). They are always talking about threats to accreditation because of the funding. If they "advertise" the problems in business journals and newspapers, businesses will likely step in to help fund the programs.

I brought this specific article up in my interview, and my interviewers assured me there wouldn't be any issues with the faculty-student ratio. Volunteer faculty from UCSF come down to fill in if need be.

Though the pharmacy programs might be underfunded relative to say the medical schools, I do not think a UC school would allow one of its programs to lose its accreditation.

You made a great choice! Good luck!

I just got accepted to UCSD! I got an email from them today!! 😀

Good luck to the rest of you guys on the alternate list!

I just got accepted too, off the waitlist.

So...I have the decision between USC and UCSD. Technically, I only have 7 days to decide, before UCSD offers the spot to someone else. But can I accept their offer for now (still keeping my spot for USC because I paid the deposit), and then decline later?

Congratulations! I think technically you could do that. But being a fellow waitlister, you know how stressful the waiting process can be for those who want to hear back from UCSD. So if you do accept the offer for now, maybe you could decide between the two schools sooner rather than later?

No email from UCSD 🙁.
I have to reapply for Fall10

I'm in the same position and am making plans to go to another school while waiting. Have you been accepted into another school? There's not much that we can do at this point but keep a positive attitude. There might still be a chance that you will get in...you never know what's going to happen. :xf:

I was accepted off the waitlist on 4/15, but decided to decline my position. Don't give up.
thank you, Tetracykline, for letting me know.
defacto, I was rejected by other schools, so no another school for back up. How many schools accepted you? thanks...

Good luck at USC, tetracykline.
I only got into one school. Don't give up...they might still be pulling people off this week...there is still hope until the class gets full. :xf: I know it's easier said than done, but you can do it!!!

So I have started to hear rumors of UCSD pharmacy students not being happy with the program- especially the classes with the med students. Has anyone else heard of anything like this or can elaborate?

my friends that go there now are all really happy there, but they do say that med students' opinions have a higher priority in the classes just because the majority of the students are med students. they told me they don't really have a problem with it, but that the difference is definitely apparent.

I have quite a few friends at UCSD Pharmacy right now who are P1s and P2s (some P3s). From what I've heard, every one of them loves it there. The only issue (that I've heard of anyway) with those classes that are taken with med students is that there does seem to be some sort of segregation in the class where pharmacy students tend to interact/study mostly with other pharmacy students and med students with other med students. That is, however, just a generalization. I'm sure if you put the effort into reaching out to other students (outside of your own dept), you will have no problem meeting/interacting with all kinds of students.

In fact, one of the reasons that I chose to attend UCSD this fall is because of all the great things that I've heard about the school and their program. Hope this helps and I look forward to seeing you in the fall!

you should come hereeeeee. im an undergrad tho its such a fun city for sure. and the people here are very laid back and relax and the buildings are mostly new esp the library near the pharm school is awesome. living is easy too cause u can take the school bus or city bus if u live close to the shuttle stop and its like a 10 minute ride to the max. i live and share a bedroom in a 2bedroom and 2 bath and have a parkin spot for only 475 total with cable internet and water etc.. =)

to the alternate-listers, do you hear anything from UCSD?

I just withdrew my acceptance to UCSD so there should be another spot opening up.

Good luck

Anyone here get any response or get accepted off the alternative list yet?
