hi guys+gals, I need your advice/inputs here. Which one do you think i should go with? I'm a CA resident, but Ohio State is quite generous with out-of-staters as far as gaining Ohio residency and tuition are concern. So, I guess money is not such a big factor. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated, and please respond quick 😀 <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> Thanks!!!

unless for some reason you are really sick of california:

ucsd
higher rank (#20), next to the beach in beautiful southern california, 300 days of sun a year, cheap, brand new curriculum, and there is so much more to do in san diego than davis or columbus

plus every1 at ucsd is very nice, but i'm sure that is the case @ ohio st/ucd
don't forget if you want to practice residency in california, definitely go to ucsd or ucd

I think you should pick where ever you would be the happiest. Which place did you like the best?

[subliminal message]You should pick Ohio because that's where you'd like to go. UCD--stinks like B.S. UCSD--8hr classes. Ohio State Ohio State Ohio State Ohio State Ohio State Ohio State Ohio State Ohio State Ohio State happy happy happy happy [/subliminal message]

The problem is I like them all...and cant really decide objectively 🙂 😀 I'm impressed with the first rate facility of UCD Med Center, of how nice people are at OSU, and of how beautiful the location and weather are at UCSD...I'm being too greedy here, guys?? 😎

Strange. I really can't imagine any reason why you wouldn't jump on the UCSD offer. However, if I had to choose between OSU and UCD, I'd have to think about that one.

Okay, i'm totally going to try to convince u to go to OSU cuz i'm still waiting to hear from UCSD  Hey, i'm honest at least right?

Consider this:
Point 1: U've been in Cali all your life. You're a mature adult. Isn't it time for a change in a new environment?

Point 2: The people at OSU are nice. Nice people are happy. If people of OSU are the nicer than people UCSD or UCD, people of OSU must be the happiest of the 3 schools.

In conclusion, you should go to OSU where u will be happy and more edified with the change in environment. 😀

I grew up in southern CA (Oceanside, Vista, 29 palms, San Diego), but have been living here in Ohio for 12 years. The thing that struck me most was how conservative it is out here. Everyone (well not really) in CA is trying to make a unique statement about themselves. Makes for some interesting people watching. Out here you really don't see anything outrageous. Everyone's just trying to do their thing in a low key way. Also the weather out here is pretty screwey. Nice and sunny one hour and thunderstorms the next. Literally. 😕

hey cong

i'm a fellow cali out in here at OSU. granted, i didn't have the option to deciding whether or not to attend a cali med school, nevertheless, i can honestly say i am very happy out here at ohio state. i've posted previously to answer questions people had about OSU. if you have any questions for me, let me know

btw, OSU is in columbus

good luck 😎

I would definitely pick UCSD out of those three. San Diego is a nice city, has unbeatable weather, and UCSD has the best reputation of the three schools. Granted, I've never been to Ohio State, but it seems awfully cold to me... If you've been in California your whole life, there is something to say for experiencing something new. I grew up in CA but went to college and grad school on the east coast. It was a great experience. If you want to get out of CA for a while and if money isn't a concern, you should consider Ohio State if you liked it as well as the other schools. Otherwise, go for San Diego!

I agree with Hero. I think that OSU is definately a winner. DEFINATELY! I am a native S. Californian, but went to school in Iowa and LOVED it. I imagine you would love Ohio. There's something to be said about trying something new. If you are an adventurous type of person, you will absolutely love the experience of the midwest. There is SO much to do. The great outdoors is at your fingertips. The people are amazing in their "low key" way. The sense of community is tearjerking. The weather is melodramatic. You have seasons to mark time... farmer's daughters to date (oh wait.. that's Iowa).
Qualifier- I'm also on UCSD's wait list.

I should add... many of those things attractive about the midwest can also be attained in Davis (minus the weather effects), but with the benefit of a UC tuition. Now, if that really isn't an issue AT ALL... then consider where (if you know) you would like to end up for residency. It will be easier to transition back to Cali, if in Cali.
Qualifier - I'm on the UCSD waitlist.

Well, I'd toss Davis right out of the equation. There's no way I'd ever go to Davis over SD. So, after that, it basically comes down to where you think you'll be happy and where you want to practice. It can be quite difficult to come back to Cali for residency if you didn't go to school here.

Good luck,

Adam

Well, seems like you guys are quite dismissive of Davis, why? Granted, the SOM campus is lacklustre, but have you seen the UCD Med Center (where you get most of your clinical tranining)? Top of the line!! I dunno...I am really torn...I will probably make a decision sometime next week..so either ways spots will be open for you guys 🙂 I just need 1 convincing argument to nail it down for me

Davis isn't as terrible as people make it out to be. I grew up in the general area (foothills) and now live in Sacramento. The UCDMC rocks. It's an excellent place for your 3rd and 4th year rotations. I know some people who are at UCD med and love it.

If you're worried about having things to do in Davis, there's alot of stuff nearby. Sacramento is a 15 min. drive and isn't a bad city. You have the Sacramento Kings and Monarchs to watch and the River Cats (minor league baseball) too. In fact, the city has been doing alot of redevelopment in certain parts and there is an abundance of excellent restaurants to choose from...Lake Tahoe and Reno are close enough, if you're interested in good snow, good scenery and/or gambling. San Francisco is a little over an hour away from Davis...Basically, you've got a lot of options.

Yes, on windy days, there are certain parts of the Davis campus that smells like cow dung, but hey, what can you do? It's a natural occurence 🙂

I guess you really need to decide where you're going to be the happiest. OSU sounds like a good place, according to what everyone has been saying. I'd almost prefer to go somewhere laid-back and low key for med school...but then again, being close to a big city has its perks!

Good luck!

la jolla, la jolla, la jolla. do you plan to settle in CA and do residency in CA? if so, you would be foolish to leave the state. davis vs sd? well, i am on hold at davis, so you should know that. i got rejected post secondary from sd. if i had the choice it would be difficult for me (my family lives in Sacramento) so davis might be better for my situation. however, if i didn't have family obligations in Sac, I would choose sd in a heartbeat. la jolla, la jolla, la jolla.

Cong, after some serious deliberation on your part, I really think that given your passions, dreams, lack of family obligations, youthfulness and desire to have one last hurrah in med school, and your especially, to not limit your freedom to discover the whole of America... taking all these things into account, I think that OSU would be the BEST place to be (mdhopeful, I was *almost* going to say Davis, but I considered your cause). OSU, OSU, OSU....

Just follow your heart...

AND YOUR HEART TELLS YOU THIS!!!

Go with your heart, they're all great schools so I agree fit is most important. I think people underestimate the quality of UCSD though. It's a damm good school in a beautiful area. The research there is top notch and the students work really hard but all the ones I've met are well rounded, passionate, and caring people.

thanks for the advice/inputs guys. Really appreciate your postings!! 🙂 And sorry to all of you in UCSD's waitlist, I think...no..I will stick with UCSD for better for worse  Hey, look at the bright side, now any of you, waitlistee at UCD or OSU will have my spots. Hope that alleviate some of your pains, Hero 🙂

yes, yes, of course. SD is a great school. But OSU wow... I know it may seem that I am biased. However, *truly* I have a friend at OSU that is very happy there. gotta go find myself some killer smileys. 😀

Hi Cong,

My vote is for UCSD also! If you would go here, you would be my future classmate!

People from the mid-west are really nice, I agree (I married one), but there are plenty of nice people (many former mid-westerners) here in San Diego...

If you like snow-shoveling and building snow-men, go to the mid-west! If you like snow-men without the snow-shoveling, come to San Diego: you can drive 1 hour up to Palomar Mountain, make one, put it on the roof of the car, and it will stay there until your car gets to La Jolla!!!

One thing that I would miss in the mid-west are mountains. California has great mountains, and the mid-west is just a bid too flat for me (I grew up near the Alps). One great thing about Davis is that you would be really close to Yosemite, which is cool.

Academically, I feel that UCSD would probably be the best choice. There are many clinical (eg. the student-run free clinic) and research opportunities here...

Good luck with your decision! If you are still unsure, you should check out the welcome back day this Saturday at UCSD.
