Hey guys I need your help picking between UCSD and USC. I got an extension from both in order to make my decision.

ok, so you got an extension from both so you can come on here and ask people on this board what they think? Go with your heart. Really, go with your heart. It sounds cliche, but ask yourself where would you be happier. Both schools are excellent, and both are in Cali. You can't go wrong either way.

They are both amazing schools. In the end, there are a couple of things to consider outside of the curriculum: price and location. Personally I think USC is in a scary part of LA and UCSD is in a La Jolla. Also, USC is private and expensive. If you are not from California, I guess they are both expensive but if you are a resident, it may make a difference. Good luck choosing.

I personally would take SC over SD, because I love LA so much. Also, the curriculum at SC seems better, with less class time as well.

alenseven... u sound hot

Both good schools. If you want to live in LA (granted, the not-nice part), go with USC. If you want to live in San Diego (given, the nice part), go with UCSD.

I'd choose UCSD, tuition, reseach, awesome location. Would only consider SC if you were going to ER medicine and/or were out of state.

What are you specifically looking for in a school?

For me, I am looking for early patient contact, teaching towards boards, some PBL integrated into traditional lecture, some small grp lectures, significant patient contact by end of 2nd yr (i.e. starting IV's, blood drawing, etc..), medical spanish classes, working at a large county hospital. Since I am interested in all that stuff listed above I would choose USC. Yes, rankings do mean something, but so does experience.

Find what you are interested in and run with it.

Now I know things may get more complicated for me once I start getting interviews (hopefully), proceeded by acceptances, but for now that is how I am going about choosing most of the schools to which I plan on applying. Good luck with choosing!!! Either way, you will have an awesome experience this coming yr.

For the record, UCSD has significant early patient contact for anyone who wants it (primarily through the free clinic program). It also has medical spanish classes. As the only med school in the county it has affiliations with all sorts of hospitals -- UCSD Hillcrest is the former county hospital.

You are correct that UCSD does not teach to boards. There is not much PBL either.
