UCSD?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd like to know opinions about UCSD, as well. I've been trying to get an appointment to discuss my denied application and they don't even bother responding as to whether or not it's possible to set something up. They told me to e-mail them in May about appts. and now they ignore me. Pretty frustrating. 😡 I'm not sure I will re-apply if this is the way the school treats applicants.

Did you interview at UCSD?

If you didnt, then it could be because of your GPA. It seems like UCSD places heavy emphasis on GPA. The average GPA of those that received an interview is 3.55:

3.55 seems kinda high. why are they making it so tough? just because there are more applicants this year?

bmb, are you going to SD or USC?

USC, are you going to UCSF?

Yes, I interviewed at UCSD, although my gpa was lower than the avg. I'm just curious to know what the major factor in their decision was. I figure if I got invited, I must meet their academic standards, but who knows.

I know a person that recruits from USCD and knows the school board pretty well. They automatically tossed out apps with a 3.3 and below cause of the overwhelming number of apps.

I interviewed at UCSD too and my cumulative GPA was lower than the average. GPA is important but I don?t think they are the absolute for determining if an applicant should be dropped or not. Enter my situation....

Yes my cumulative GPA was lower (much lower) then the avg, but my prerequisite GPA was pretty good (thank gosh for the A's in O-Chem)
I had spent many hours volunteering at Hospitals and donating time to charity events (MDA, Arthritis Foundation, and American Diabetes Association)
During my time in college I had worked at an Organic Chemistry Laboratory synthesizing compounds for a pharm company and at a Biomedical Laboratory for Diabetes research. I cannot stress how much this experience has paved my way towards a career in health.
My experiences in the lab allowed me to travel to Mexico and work at an Ethnopharmacology lab looking for compounds in the jungle that could have medicinal purpose for HIV/AIDS (pretty cool trip)...and because of my research in Mexico I was able to travel to South Africa on a fellowship to see first hand the destruction that AIDS can do to a country.
I will never forget the trip and I will never forget meeting the countless people talking about their experiences with HIV/AIDS. This experience is probably the main reason for me to pursue a career in clinical pharmacy.

Now I am not trying to show off or anything but what I am getting at is that your GPA doesn't tell the whole story about you. I think the main reason why I was accepted to UCSD was my unique extracurricular activities and my passion to help people. Now you don?t need to travel off to Africa to help people, there are many places here in the US (one good place is the local VA...the ultimate humbling experience!)

The main thing that you have to remember is that the admission committee is looking through a pile of applications...so you need to be very creative with your application and make it stand out from the others...I strongly feel that the Personal Statement is a great tool to help inform the admissions committee why you would be a great candidate to their program?.Don?t worry about the GPA, I just said F#$# IT and applied and look what happened!!!

woah crazyIslander !!!! I am impressed. Good job and congratulations, you're doing great things.
