UCSF 2009 Waitlist and Acceptance offer declined

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Damn April 10th deadline is here at last! Hopefully the list will move again so I can get in 🙂

I already posted this on the USC thread but I thought it should be posted here too. I am turning down my spot at UCSF to go to USC. Good luck to all of you guys! 👍

Congrats meteor2! You are in! But the same advice as I gave CafeMed, I wouldn't celebrate yet until you actually get the official notice. 🙂

Thank you puqa! You are my lucky number 12 ! Now the only part left is waiting for UCSF to send out their official response! Hopefully next week!

Good luck to people who are still on the waiting list! Don't give up hope! I have a feeling this year the waiting list will move quite a lot.

Thanks rycetrix, I'll take your advice and hold up till I see the letter/phone call from UCSF hehe.

i was just wondering for those of you that are accepted into ucsf, what was your gpa? and what undergrad school did you go to? b/c ucsf is my dream school and i dont think i have good enough grades at all. im applying this summer and really nervous i wont get accepted to any school.

Check last year and this year UCSF threads - many applicants including myself have posted not only their stats, but also detailed lists of ECs, talked about their work experiences, community involvement and etc. I think it would be helpful for you, I've read pretty much every single thread on UCSF on this forum last spring before applying past fall to see how competitive I was and where I stood exactly.

Also, if you can, attend one of the information sessions hosted by director of Admissions Joel Gonzales. That was very helpful as well and he was able to answer a lot of questions about supplemental application. You can sign up for them on UCSF website.

I will be turning down my UCSF acceptance because I just got in to my first choice USC! GL guys!

wow, a lot of people are turning down ucsf this year. I hope it goes all the way down the list 👍

Hi everybody. Ditto to harry85. I am turning down my spot at UCSF to go to USC as well. Good luck to all of you!

This thread is great but apparently there hasn't been ANY official movement yet. So to those of you who plan on declining:

Please officially withdraw your names, thanks!

Wow, everyone is just turning down UCSF to go to USC... I would still choose UCSF even if I got pulled off the AC list for USC. I guess everyone is really attached to socal. Maybe a potential acronymn for USC is "U're Scared of Change"...haha...jkjk. But on a more serious note, the tuition is definitely a major factor for me and $20k extra per year is not worth it.

So if those of you who plan on declining would offically with draw your names it would really help! Thanks!

With so many posting that they are declining UCSF, I'm sure there are quite a seats available now. I bet it's just that OSACA haven't begun officially alerting those on the waitlist yet since the 4/10 deadline JUST passed.

Yeah, give it some time. OSACA is efficient, but not THAT efficient.

I remember not getting my first update till May of last year when I was waitlisted. If you get a spot, you'll know right away. OSACA wouldn't string you guys along!

This is very puzzling to me too... for those who are choosing USC over UCSF, what was/were deciding factor(s)- other than staying/relocating to So Cal?

so true, lol. I am from SoCal , but I would love to live in Nor Cal.

For waitlist position movement, spots could technically skip very fast, correct? Say a spot opens up close to when school starts, would it be common for several people on the waitlist to turn the offer down because they have already put down a deposit/started living arrangements at another school. Or do most people not care about the money/planning lost to go to UCSF.

I have been checking out both the USC thread and the UCSF thread and it seems like most the people who are choosing USC for UCSF do in fact live pretty close to USC and they would commute from home. Then, you have the tuition for USC vs. the tuition and room and board for UCSF, which is actually similar, and thus, they choose USC since they will be closer to home and have established a friend base here. This is only a suggested reasoning for why people are choosing USC over UCSF for socalers and thus, the acronym I came up with. 😉 In any case, I did see someone from norcal choose USC over UCSF because they liked USC's campus and was willing to get a scenery change and experience socal sunny weather.

well...it's because they know the truth.

USC > UCSF!! 😛😛 haha jk, both are good schools...

Even though USC was my first choice, I kind of regret not applying to UCSF just to see if I could get in.

My mom kept egging me on (yay post-Easter pun) about applying to USC, but i never bothered. We live just 5 miles away.

It's UCSF for me all the way! I love the Bay Area... although i don't think i'll ever get used to using the words "hella/hecka" and freeways will still be refered to as THE 580 or THE 118.

USC has a very nice campus, but is directly surrounded by some of the dirtiest, most dangerous (and least desirable) scenery LA has to offer a la the not so glamorous parts of downtown. Although that's a fair compromise for tolerable year-round weather.

That's what I was thinking about too when I was applying for pharmacy school. A draw for going to USC was that I could live at home and commute, which would save a lot. However, UCSF was my first choice no matter what! Luckily, UCSF wanted me, which I think is a miracle, and I don't have to worry too much anymore.

Now I just have to figure out how to survive the cold 😀

Early congratulations to CafeMed and meteor2!

It's actually not as cold as everyone makes it out to be. I've lived here for quite a few years and I can definitely see global warming kicking in - the weather has been getting warmer and warmer every year. Sure, it's not SoCal, but last year even in November we were dressed in summer clothes !

Uhm did anyone receive the email from Joel regarding the course schedule change form ? Lol when I got the email from him I thought its about the waitlist movement and I almost had a heart attack right there!

Looks like I'm jumping on the USC bandwagon too.:laugh: Lookout! USC pharmacy class of 2013 here I come!!! 😱 I'm turning down my spot at UCSF as well as UCSD. GL guys! :xf:

Congrats rex! You can't go wrong with any of those three schools. But seriously, what is it about USC that is making all these people choose to go to the school???

Actually you should only be declining one of those schools. You could not have held spots at both schools past the 10th. So if you have not chosen one, you are no longer in any, and don't have to do any declining now.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I previously already turned down UCSD to go to UCSF (before the 4/10 deadline). But in light of the recent news of me getting into USC, I am now turning down UCSF for USC. Hence, I actually declined both UCSD and UCSF but am only declining UCSF after the 4/10 deadline. I mentioned both UCSF and UCSD here because I believe there might be some who are on the waitlist for both schools and I thought the additional information would be helpful to them. Hope that makes more sense!

Thanks cheburashka! It's good to know that it won't be that cold. Not so good about the global warming though 🙁. I thought I'd have to buy lots of thick coats.

San Francisco is the best city in the world! With amazing restaurants, two popular bridges, unique diversity, and probably the most liberal place in the world to live in. People from all around the world come to visit, and you get to live there for 4 years, enjoying city life and the bad ass public transportation, need I say more?

Ha, ha, ha, well I don't know. I like being really warm so I have a few thick coats. It's colder in the Parnassus area than the rest of San Francisco, or at least that's my opinion of it. Its not cold compared to Boston, MA, or so my sister says, but its colder than Northern or Southern CA. Someone told me San Francisco has Indian summers, which means its warmer in the fall than in the summer; I've found this to be mostly true. I wore a thick coat to the 4th of July celebration last year ^_^' Not only that, but the rooms that you have classes in can be really cold sometimes. Then again I like things warmer than other people, like 80-90 degree weather, so maybe I'm biased on the weather issue 😉

Parnassus is usually pretty cold because it's situated on a hill so all the cold weather and wind gets stuck on that side. On the other hand, the neighborhoods on the other side, Castro, Noe Valley, etc., are usually 5-10 degrees warmer. I've broken quite a few umbrellas during really bad rain storms because the wind gets so bad.

Summers really suck in the Sunset and Richmond because the fog is really persistent, so I'm used to getting out of the City any chance I can get, but the Indian summer thing makes it all worth while in September and October when we finally have 70-85 degree weather. I warn all my friends to wear layers during summer, especially during SF Pride, and they never listen. Then they complain that it's cold, while I'm bundled up when I see them. I have to resist saying, "I told you so!"

So did anyone on the waiting list receive any official response from UCSF yet?

Nothing yet. I think they might wait until next week to start notifying waitlisters. I just sent in my course change form. The only other email (besides the course change email) I received was an email about sending transcripts if accepted.

I would start sending the transcripts anyway, since that helps speed up the process, especially if you've finished all your coursework. Given your position on the waitlist, I think it's just a matter of time for you before you get the letter. 🙂

Patience, my friend...patience lol. But seriously, like what stkyrice said, you have nothing to worry about with already so many posts of people declining their spots on SDN (and probably many who have not posted), it's just a matter of time before you receive your offer letter/email. Congrats!

Anyone knows what were this years UCSF school of pharmacy admission stats??

can't wait till waiting is over! i wonder when we'll get the official update!

Where are you on the waiting list if you dont mind me asking? I'm curious if they start notifying the first few people on the waiting list yet.

im not one of "the first people" unfortunately, but still have hope! im #16 on the list.

the list is moving! 😛

Got a call from Joel...then an email. You guys better be on your toes, cuz the email says you get only 2 days to reply.

I almost missed the voice message he left cuz i'd lost my cell phone last week.

Got the email on monday.

Judging by how many peeps are choosing other schools this year, i think i'll see quite a few of you waitlisters this Sept as well ;P

Suparman31, did you got the email from Joel yet? The first person in the list got it so I assume you wont be far off since you are #4.

haha.. thanks. It might be another week til more emails come out. Joel did say that he'd be out for the rest of the week.

Suparman... are you from the valley? 818?? I almost never meet people from our valley. Most of my college friends are from San Gabriel or something south of the 101fwy. It'd be fun to hang out before we start classes in the fall 😛
