UCSF Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone. Just wanted to say a quick congrats to all of you. I'm a second year and I am loving it. As far as the housing options, I am at Mission Bay and have not had any problems. It is, of course, brand new so there really is nothing to complain about. It is a bit more expensive, though. Good luck with all the housing and admin stuff and I look forward to meeting everyone soon!

Anyone know if we have the option of having a parking space if we're in on-campus housing? I know parking up there is really tough... but I'm going to have a car with me. That may have to be the deciding factor between on/off campus housing haha

Hahaha, that's definitely an interesting question. I'm curious to know if on-campus housing is what most freshmen do. Because, I wouldn't mind living on campus again, if it meant I'd be around a lot of classmates and getting to meet people. If that's not the case, it'd be fun to have a place in the city.

Hello all,

Just got the good news and look forward to a great class in the Fall.

Housing is difficult in SF (I've been in a rent controlled place for many years), but the school does have a housing bulletin board that seems to post reasonably priced places that may not be widely advertised to the general public. From what I've seen on the board, there are some nice in-law apartments and such. Craigslist does have options too.

Cheers!

Welcome Blue Fire!!! And congrats again on your acceptance! 😀

Yes, congrats bluefire. I'm trying to be patient about 2nd look weekend, I'm excited.

I know! I'm sooooooooo excited about that weekend!!!

Anybody have a match list from this year or prior years? I'm curious.

I've been looking at housing too. The gal at mission bay told me the area around the student housing isn't great (I think she used the word 'developing' with sarcasm). Any one know about that area and how long the shuttle ride is to Parnassus?

I'm almost sure I'm going to do off-campus housing at this point...

The Mission Bay area isn't that bad and with the new gym (UCSF) and developing access to MUNI (via light rail/streetcars) you are close to a lot of good stuff. Mission Bay is becoming part of the campus in a meaningful way. If you go to ucsf.edu and search for "transportation" the shuttle schedules come up as the first or second search item. You can see the schedules, either red or grey goes back and forth I think. You can see how late they go (but I'm not sure about weekends). If you have a car (sorry to hear about your accident s.f.), you can park at the UCSF garage with validation for like $1 or free on weekends. I take the blue/gold shuttle all the time between SFGH and mission bay and also go UCSF-SFGH and it's fast, clean, pleasant and great. Such a contrast to driving in SF (which I basically won't do anymore if I can help it).

Hope this helps and excited to meet people on the accepted weekend.

Hey guys... are any of you applying to the summer research fellowship program? If you are, what are you considering doing for housing during that time?

Hey Dancer77, maybe. It sounds competitive (only 10 fellowships out of a class of 141!!). I'm sure you can find affordable sublets on craigslist. As for me, *if* I were lucky enough to get it, I would take BART from the east bay (home) everyday.

yes... super competitive, but I highly doubt all 141 students are going to apply! (I think? haha)

Hey everyone! Congrats to everyone!

I am officially joining this club. I got accepted today 🙂 I am very excited and look forward to meeting you all at second look. 🙂

😀 👍 YAY!!! Congrats PG 🙂

Hey all,

I'm not sure if you guys have been following the pre-allo thread for UCSF but I wanted to let u all know that Peripatetic is putting together a list of people from SDN that want to be introduced at 2nd look. Just PM her your name and email address.

Welcome PG!

Hello everyone, I'm also joining the club. Just got the big white envelope today in LA. Can't wait to meet all of you during second look weekend.

I'm putting together an email list of all the SDN UCSFers! So if you want to be in contact with us all, just give me your email, who you are, and something interesting...

Congrats to everyone, I am absolutely convinced we are going to have an incredible class. I can't wait!

Hey everyone!
Received my acceptance 04/05! So excited to join!
😛

Anyone have info on Studios in Mission Bay? I'd like to live on my own and this seems like the cheapest alternative. Judging by the square footage of the floor plans, they're pretty small. Thanks.

Hey chemist, no i don't have any info on the studios but the Sunday of the accepted student weekend, med students take us on a housing tour so maybe you can see or ask about the studios then.

When is the deadline for the housing application?

Thanks bh. I guess I'm too excited and missed the tour part on the paperwork. I looked for deadlines on the Housing website and didn't see any. I did find this under the FAQs:

How far in advance can I book an apartment?
Apartment bookings can be made up to two months in advance.

Anyone find any concrete dates?

yeah, that's what i was confused about too. and i heard that there'll be a housing tour from a ucsf student who emailed me to tell me a bit about the school. it wasn't specifically in the agenda. congrats on your acceptance!

Yes, I would like to join this thread too!!! I have nothing else to say except for that I'm SO EXCITED to meet you all!!! 😀 😍

Upon someone's recommendation (from the UCSF 2011 email list - PM me your email if you want to be added!), I created a facebook group for UCSF 2011 class - it's just called UCSF 2011. 🙂

haha we have moved past SDN into the facebook realm! yes! 😀

Has anyone received a financial package yet?

No financial aid package here. According to http://saa.ucsf.edu/financial/enter...%20Financial%20Services%20contact%20me?%20%A0...

"You will receive a 'confirmation letter' from our office after we determine your initial eligibility for financial aid. An 'Offer Letter' will follow that letter. Offer Letters are typically mailed from our office in May if you start in the summer quarter and starting in July if your program begins in the fall quarter."

Since it seems like offer letters aren't sent until July, I have made an appointment with the financial aid counselor during second look.

I got my letter on Monday night. I just don't know what to think! I'm really worried about housing costs for my significant other who is moving with me...

I'm trying to decide between Davis and UCSF, I know that might sound crazy to some but I have a lot of reasons to pick Davis too...

Anyway, I'm really excited to go to second look and check this out from the other side of the fence.

Hi everyone! Congrats on your acceptance to UCSF 🙂

I'm a current MS1, and although I should be studying I decided for some reason to look around SDN for the first time since . . . starting med school. I'm one of the organizers of the Accepted Students' Weekend, so I can answer some of the lingering questions you guys had about that:

- The Friday (5/4) night dinner is for Underrepresented in Medicine students only. If you're not here on Friday and you're not UIM, don't worry about registration. We'll have it on Saturday (5/5) morning too. Sign-ups for Saturday afternoon activities and Saturday night dinners will take place on Saturday morning as well. If you are here on Friday and aren't going to the dinner, never fear. Your hosts will help you find food/fun that night.

- After the Saturday night dinners, there will be an "unofficial" Saturday night activity (party) at a MS1 house. More details on that will be announced ad nauseum during the weekend once we actually figure it out. The party should finish early and then some of us were talking about going to a few of the Inner Sunset pubs, although you guys are free to do anything at all.

- You'll be getting more information on hosting as more hosts sign up.

- Please participate in the Big Buddy emailing program if you want to ask specific questions; it's a great way to get to know an MS1 or two and to learn more about the details of school/life at UCSF. There was a form in your packet, just fill out and mail or fax it in!

- The housing tour/progressive breakfast will be on Sunday morning (5/6). Again, the specifics will be revealed to you on Saturday of ASW.

As far as other questions . . .

- Most students, especially MS1s and MS2s, live in the Inner Sunset. Mission Bay is very nice and has a killer gym, but it's not much cheaper than most Inner Sunset housing, and it's about a 20-30 minute shuttle ride away. Student housing near Parnassus (the campus where you'll be for MS1/MS2) doesn't have parking; at Mission Bay I believe you can buy a permit but I'm not 100% (it may be included).

- "On-campus" (touching an edge of campus) housing is hit-or-miss . . . the new building is really nice; the older ones are basically dorm rooms in a house, with a mixture of students from all schools (med/pharm/dent/nursing). On-campus housing is cheap but it's pretty limited and not everyone's cup of tea, so most people live off-campus.

- Off-campus housing ranges from not-so-expensive (for SF = 800-900) to pretty expensive (1000+). Craigslist is 100% the best way to find housing. I had a hard time because I have a dog, but I was still able to do it. It's not fun, but it's kind of a rite of passage for living in the city I guess 🙂 Some apartments will let you rent a parking spot; I have one in the garage of my house. The further out in the Sunset you get (away from school), the easier parking becomes.

- I don't know much about it, but I think PRIME-US is a tuition-free program.

I can say with absolute confidence that I couldn't have chosen a better school than UCSF. I love everything about it. We're so excited to meet you all at Accepted Students' Weekend! It should be fun and casual, and a great way to meet the class of 2010 as well as the class of 2011 🙂

PS: I know you guys started a facebook group, which is awesome. I also saw an email list floating around . . . one thing that's been really useful for our class is a Yahoo group that was started in the summer before we entered school. A lot of people havec worked out housing, meeting people, and just general fun stuff (going to events, going to clubs, sharing a funny Youtube video, whatever) on that group, and we still use it all the time. It's kind of like our unofficial class listserve. So that's something to think about.

(God I write a lot. I'm going to bed so I can take full advantage of my reading day tomorrow and get Thursday's final over with!)

agh... i'm looking for off-campus on the berkeley side of the bay. any suggestions on where to look? (i couldn't get http://www.places4students.com/ to work) is housing better in SF? i guess i could take the BART into berkeley if i lived elsewhere in the area. i've tried craig's list, but it's seeming hard to find apartments that don't need renters until late june. berkeley has a rental listing that costs $20 to use, but it's all listings for students, so maybe that's worth it...

it's so hard to pick an apartment from 2500 miles away.

oops, didn't realize there was a page 2 to this thread. sorry for the redundancy.

Hey guys! When are you guys planning on moving to SF?

The closer we get, the more excited. Partying with all the UCSF students and checking out housing is going to be awesome. I'm psyched.

Furthermore, my mom called me and told me my "aid" package came in the other day. It was just the general Stafford loan, with us paying the rest. I'm not sure if this was the formal package, I've heard they don't finalize anything until the CA budget is in place. At any rate, I'm meeting with financial services when I'm there, for sure.

I received the "financial aid" letter too and asked the FinAid office for details. They said that it is only a Tentative Eligibility Letter. They are still waiting for the School of Medicine to add to the aid package and we can also decide to apply for an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan after we get the Offer of Financial Aid. She also said that our official offer letters should be done before Second Look Weekend.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info holyawkward! =) 👍

For those of you who applied to PRIME, after emailing your application did you get some sort of confirmation that it was recieved, because I didnt and Im kinda of worried it wasnt recieved

One more week! Can't wait to meet you all and check out the school/area again.

I'm super excited. How many of you are applying for the summer research fellowship? That sounds like another great thing going on at UCSF.

Hey Guys,

Just thought I would post on here and say Hi.

Looking forward to meeting you guys this weekend. Like most of you my biggest dillemma is finding housing close to school that is cheap. I dont want to share an aparpment as I will be newly married and would like a decent amount of privacy.

For everyone searching for inexpensive housing, consider posting an ad on Craigslist's housing wanted section. I'm local so I started looking at tons of 1 bedrooms and studios that I found posted on Craigslist for a few months but I couldn't find what I was looking for at the price I wanted. Then I posted a brief description of my ideal place and price range and I found a great in-law studio in the Sunset in a couple days. It already has utilities included in the rent so that's one less thing to worry about!

Good luck!

Hello All,

I had posted on the pre-allo thread for UCSF but haven't been on SDN in forever! Just wanted to drop by again to say hello and that I'm excited for Saturday to meet everyone. I'll be the crazy one driving up from So. Cal. on Friday night and then heading back down on Saturday night (have school stuff on both Friday night and Saturday lunch). It will be worth it though! I don't know about you guys, but it's make or break time for me right now - coming down to the wire with everything and needing to make my decision - fast! I'm counting on you guys to really sway me this weekend - hahaha. So what is it exactly that draws you to UCSF versus other places?

Safe travels to everyone and see you Saturday!

I just got back from ASW yesterday and now I am absolutely set on UCSF.

Do any of you have any tips on finding housing in the inner sunset area. I live in Florida so the craigslist option is not particularly appealing to me.

I never knew about this thread... just found of today 😀

btw, GATOR... I think we interviewed on the same day. I remember a guy from USF or U of Florida ...or something like that
