I need a welcome distraction to studying for exams, doing reports, and all that business necessary for graduating. With over 30 days left...SENIORITIS has hit to an extreme. I can't get myself to focus....anyone in the same boat....😴

Its alright though, H is a great school, he will be okay. Besides, maybe we will meet up with him. UCSF and H have great relations.
 
hey all, i've been travelling and out of the loop lately, grabbing my internet where I can... A few responses to some things -

DAVIS vs. SF - i had a hard time here too, my fam lives right near davis, and i really like my fam, plus my bf is going to be in law school in Sac... but according to some Drs in the area, they say davis is "almost there" that in the future they could see that going to either would be of equal benefit, but that at the moment, SF has more to offer - that said, it depends on what you want. I really want to work in inner-city, disparity, and international health issues... and SF is great for that.

As for ASW - it was fabulous meeting all of you! I think we have a rocking diverse class, it was so impressive.

FinAid - I got my package, it looks alright, I think... wont cover everything, but i got a little grant too, which I was excited about. Any amount helps!

Housing - I'm still working on renting my doctor's house, only thing is, her son doesn't want to move out (he has to), and I don't know if i want to get into that... So I may start looking again... I'm abroad until mid-july and wont be moving until august-ish.

Small question to ask all the CA residents out there - did you turn in your "Statement of Legal Residence" with your acceptance letter? It seems a bit much to squeeze in that little envelope, and I couldn't find any mention of deadlines/where to send to anywhere. Thanks - can't wait to meet you all come September!!

I know. They didn't really explain it. I believe it goes to the registrar's office instead of the admissions office. (When I turned in the acceptance letter, she said that was all she needed.) Did you get the letter with you SAA user ID in the mail? When I logged in the statement of residency showed up as a hold on my registration.

Yeah, I did get the registrar's info, but I haven't tried logging in yet - I guess I'll just mail it separately.

Interestingly she also mentioned that the admissions office has different residency criteria than the registrar. Strange.

I also got the letter and logged on the website and found that my statement of residency showed up as a hold too. I'll call the office tomorrow and find out!
 
It's showing up as a hold on mine too. I didn't don't think it's a big deal, filling out that form is really easy. Welcome newly accepted!!
 
In regards to the Statement of Legal Residency hold, just call the Registrar's office and they'll release the hold. I don't understand why they wouldn't do it automatically *shrug*

I am actually putting on a conference on health disparities, primary care, and interprofessional collaboration June 25-29. It should be fun and you're all invited to participate. It's a great way to get to know the faculty and programs as UCSF. hey there, so as much as med school=no life, i have about a dozen weddings all over the place this summer/fall, and I cant seem to locate a schedule for next year... does anyone have any idea of where to get the academic calendar for next year? thanks!!

hey all, i think ucsf is absolutely amazing and it has always been my #1 ... unfortunately i got a major scholarship at washu (full-tuition) and was planning on going there ... then i just got my ucsf acceptance. realistically, do you think i would be a fool to turn down washu?

I think you should try to use your WashU scholarship as leverage and see if you can get a little more aid from UCSF. Then it comes down to your gut, and if you think you'd be happy at WashU vs. UCSF, even with the money. It's tough to ignore a huge scholarship though. Best of luck with the choice.

I turned down a fullride to come to UCSF (at a really good school too). It ended up being $ or family... and that seemed like a downright stupid choice. But it depends on you, and what you want to do. I travel a lot, so being based near the fam is very important. Plus, there's enough in med school to make life hard... pick where you'll be happiest... and that's a very personal decision.

Hi future UCSFers! Congrats to all who will be joining the class of 2011!

I'm in the class of 2008, but I'm going to take a year off so I'll be joining 2009 instead. As such, I plan on sub-leasing out my fabulous inner sunset room to someone for the school year starting at the end of August when you guys start (I come back around June of next year).

I am a girl, and live with another cool girl that is NOT a student (you guys have NO idea how great of an idea it is to not live with other med students). My room is pretty much the biggest room you can get in SF, I have a huuuuge desk and a queen bed and 2 bookshelves and I have so much room left I can still dance around each morning. I also have a huge walk-in closet, and a shared bathroom. Anyway, since I plan on moving back after my year is over, I was hoping to sublease the room with the furniture included. AND I have laundry in house AND a garage parking spot...pretty impossible in this city. Rent is $890 including all utilities (cable, wifi, etc) and including the garage spot. Thought it'd be a great offer for a future med student who can benefit, especially if you don't want to furnish a room right now, or if you plan on moving away and spending your summer elsewhere (which I highly recommend).

Hello all -

Just finished the craig's list housing search this weekend - yay! It took forever for me to find something that matched all my needs, but it happened and I'm SO excited to be moving to SF in a few weeks!

Thought I'd share that there's a wonderful apartment available that is close to UCSF in the inner sunset neighborhood. I had a difficult time selecting my new place over this option. It is a 4 bedroom/ 2 bathroom unit ($800 plus utilities). The room is probably the largest and easily fits a queen bed, huge desk, dresser, with lots of space for a chair if you like. It has beautiful bay windows and free laundry right in the apartment! Direct TV and a ping pong table along with a policy prohibiting drugs and smoking inside come with the package. I visited 9 places before finding this one and knew immediately it was a great match. I decided to go with something else only because I preferred to live with girls rather than guys. The landlord is amazing and was a great pleasure to work with (he offered a great discount for long term/1 year lease). He hopes to keep a quieter/study environment in his unit (some of the other guys are going to school/ studying for the MCAT), so I thought I'd post to my fellow classmates. Take advantage of it soon - I'm sure it will go fast!

I was thinking about buying some of my textbooks for class/prologue. Anyone - especially upperclassmen - have suggestions on which books to buy and which to avoid?

Here's a quick list of the "required" textbooks according to UCSF:
Prologue syllabus (of course)
Medical Physiology - Boron
Basic Immunology - Abbas
Gray's Anatomy for Students - Drake
Human anatomy atlas (4 options - Moses, Netter, Agur, and Rohen)
Robbins Basic Pathology - Kumar
Basic and Clinical Pharmacology
Wheater's Functional Histology text and color atlas - Young

Whew - would love to get your opinions on the book list for this year!

I spoke to about half a dozen UCSF 2nd and 3rd years and they actually told me not to buy any, meaning NONE of the books. They told me to only get the syllabuses - b/c the teachers actually provide detailed notes about everything they talk about in them, and then only buy books as we feel we need them. So i'm taking their word for it, yay - no spending hundreds of dollars!

My friends at Vanderbilt said that they bought the books and never used them either...

Oh, the only book they said we needed (other than the syllabuses) was Netter's Anatomy.
 
Thanks for the advice docdude - I've already bought Netter and have my own histology color atlas (which was helpful last year in the lab). I was thinking of getting Gray's Anatomy if I think it would be a good reference - but the others I think I might leave on the shelf if the syllabus is complete.

I heard the same as docdude. Buy the syllabi (pretty sure this is plural) and Netter's, but otherwise basically nothing. One M2 told me there was a neuro book that's good for BMB. In any case, I think our book money is fairly safe. I'm excited to start, the party Saturday was awesome.
