Hi All,

I am an entering UCSF dental student and I had to make a hard decision between UPenn and UCSF. Withdrawing my acceptance from Penn was a very difficult thing for me to do, but I did it because I wanted to live in a good neighborhood, stay in california and be close to my family. However, the more i read about how ucsf students feel about their school and how the school prepares students for postgraduate programs such as orthodontics and endo, for some reason I feel as though i have made a wrong choice.

Of those of you that actually attend UCSF and/or have graduated from UCSF what do you think about the school and how it treats its students.

I have already been having problems with the student health services, I have been trying to get the health hold off my record and for some reason the health services office is just not friendly at all and I feel as though the school in itself doesnt care much about its students and about their well being. I want to enjoy my dental school experience, but I feel that I am not going to enjoy it much because the school doesnt seem to care much about its dental students.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

The Student Health is run by medical school and some idiots. I never had any good words to say about them for 4 yrs. However, it's not something you deal with every day unless you are sick and have to go there for chronic stuff. The only good thing about them is all your surgery or if anything happened while you are in school, it's all free. I know people had child birth, open heart surgery, etc..all for free (not quite because you pay for the insurance), but you don't have to pay out of pocket.

I did not know that some people didn't even bother get all the vaccine until they got to school. Then they came down to student health to get all their shots, TB things for like 26 dollars to get all the holds off. If I knew, I would have done that. I paid close to $300 for all my HepB, TB test and all other shots

The school is really fun, small class size and every body knows each other.
San Francisco is a nice city to live in. I had the best time there. You will find your classmates are the best part of the whole experience. We always have good students, some are not so nice but most are very, very nice.
You should go to Facebook and join the group of UCSF dental graduates. Best of luck to you and you will find your learning experience very worthwhile.

Thank you so much for your input. I really do appreciate it. So what do you do now tinker bell...as in general practice or have you specialized already..Thanks a bunch.

Interesting. A couple open-heart surgeries and the cost of the school pays for itself!

One guy in med school had open heart surgery in his first year. He was so happy student health paid for every thing. Yeah, if you want to make your money worth, have a few kids and you get your tuition back

I'm not really trying to become a dentist. I just need some work done, and I have no health insurance.

For some reason I though you were going to dental school...I just realized your profile says medical 🙂
