And pay any due fee. Make sure they list you as a resident. Last year a lot of us got listed as non-resident for some reasons. Enjoy your break before school starts!

How much due fees should I expect to pay at the time of registration in mid-august? I sure it is not the tuition, because my finAid says it won't be disbursed until sept?

I typed mine and limited myself to the three pages that they provided. I just figured out the borders and then printed it out on the provided sheets. I used every inch of room though.

Hey mark and info guy. You're doing a great thing helping all of us out, Thanks!

Here's my question(s): since all (or most) of our lectures are going to be online and using powerpoint (i assume), do most people just print them out and take notes on the printed slides? I've been thinking about getting a tablet pc laptop, what do you think, have you seen anyone around using them, would it be helpful for drawing and jotting down diagrams paperlessly? And what about mac's, what is the ratio of mac to pc? Does it even matter which one you have?

I too think Mark did a great thing. Like anyone else, I had many questions prior school started, but had nowhere to turn in.
Anyway, yeah, most people print them out and take notes on their printed slides. Some fast typers (with fast brain) take notes directly onto the slides in their laptop. I think there are 3 students with tablet laptop in our class. There may be about 5 people with macs. There may be more but those are what I see at school. Usually it doesn't matter which one you have. I think there was one incidence when mac people couldn't get the tooth atlas program to work right on their computer. That issue might have been resolved, but I don't know.

what kind of tablet pc are you thinking of getting. Im thinking of gettin one too but i just dont know which. The school requirest he screen to be 14" or bigger but most of the tablets are 12". Im stuck between getting the tablet and the macbook.
 
The recommended computers are not necessary. It is like comparing between buying a hardcover and a paperback. Come on. There are only two main programs that we will use: powerpoint and acrobat reader. Even my PIII laptop can run these programs.

School is from 8-5 when it's a full day. They have something called ISO (Independant study option) that you will have twice a week. This happens two afternoons per week making school only last from 8-noon. SO, expect class from 8-5 three days per week and from 8-noon on two days per week. We had ISO on Wed and Fri for Fall and Spring, and Tues and Fri in Winter qtr. during our first year.

Two people that had tablet PC's that I know are Sarah Jockin and Konrad Ferguson. Write my e-mail ([email protected]) and I will facilitate a way for you to talk to them. They are both good friends of mine and would love to help you.
 
What did/do most people do with their two half days? I remember from interviewing that Dr. Alexander was talking about how a lot of students choose to do volunteer work or lab research or get involved in some other extra-curricular. Is that type of thing pretty much standard or expected of you, or is it more like an study option?

I wouldn't recommend buying the Dell computer that the school tries to peddle on you. You can find a better deal on your own and then fill out the forms at Financial Aid and they will reimburse you (with an unsubsidized stafford loan). I got a computer for $850 that worked just fine for me (the suggested school computer is like $1,700....not that it's not nice, but I think you can find a better deal on your own). I'd suggest waiting to get to the school and asking around the people in our class (D2's) as what computer to buy. Get a lot of opinions. Additionally, I can track down some people who may be able to help with this decision if you write me at my e-mail.

You can do whatever you want during these times. One joke was that ISO stood for independent sleeping option. Nothing is expected of you other than to pass all of your tests to the best of your ability. School is what you make of it. You can do however much or little as you like. You must pass the tests and attend all classes, minimum.

I don't really know because I didn't do any volunteering.....I always use ISO to workout or study/practice in the lab. Andre in our class got some award for volunteering....if you write me at my e-mail I can give you a way to talk to him. Also, during orientation they bombard you with speakers pushing their volunteer work.

Don't take this the wrong way because you are never wrong to volunteer.....BUT, sometimes people would make commitments before school got really difficult. Then they wished they hadn't because a bunch of tests would come along and they had to do their volunteer work. This made for some long nights trying to study. My buddy John had something like this happen.....we had a bunch of tests over two weeks and as a class we were completely spent. The last test was on a Thurs. and everyone was in the mood for relaxing/drinking/whatever..... JUST NO SCHOOL! Just as he was going to go home he realized he had to go do his CDC volunteer work that night. I really felt bad for the guy because I would have rather lit myself on fire at that moment than go back into school to work. I guess I'd just be careful about overloading yourself.

I'm glad to see you say that, I am looking at the specs of the Dell they suggest we get (60GB comp for $1449,) earlier today I saw a 100GB for under a thousand. Is the extra cost tied up in the software (2003 Microsoft office, academic version, pre-installed UCSF software) ? I don't know my way around computers, but what ucsf sent looks overpriced with bad specs already.... so I'd love a low down on the main things we need to find in a computer, and what ucsf software etc. we could get for free/discount from UCSF. Does UCSF have tech support or someone who will help us with this at orientation? (or do we need to have our comps bought before hand?)
 
i bought a dell 710m back in november. it meets all the qualifications otehr than the screen size. mine is 12.1" . will i have to buy another laptop? damn.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!! That computer will work just fine!!!

Don't buy anything for school until it's absolutely necessary.....like I said, I only purchased one book all year....and I didn't even need it. Be prudent with your money.....try to keep it in your pocket!!!

I'm sure the software is part of the cost....but you also buy complete tech support and warranty coverage with the school computer....this IS valuable if anything goes wrong. I chose to buy one with no warranty, rolling the dice. So far, so good.....no problems....... BUT, if my computer craps out I'll have to buy another.

You don't even NEED a computer to pass school. They put all of the power point presentations on WebCT for you to look at. Everything you need to know for the tests is on these presentations. SO it's handy to have a laptop to have access to all the slides at all times. BUT, if you have a desktop and a printer you can have all the slides with you on hardcopy. This worked fine for some people....

If you can get someone in the class to print the slides for you (DON'T TRY TO PRINT IN THE LIBRARY, it's expensive and their equiptment is WWII army surplus...it sucks) then you don't even need a computer (any other computer work can be done in the computer labs on campus). But this is somewhat (very) inconvienient.

Thus to answer the last part....you can have a computer on day one, day 10, in Nov., or never. It's up to you. They are VERY good to have. I would not have chosen to do last year without mine. ALMOST ALL TEST QUESTIONS ARE ON THE POWERPOINT SLIDES!!!! Notice the capitalization!!!

No and no. You don't need scrubs until 2nd year (you'll learn to "borrow" gowns from the clinic for anatomy lab) Once you do need scrubs, you can buy them from any vendor as the student store merchandise is overpriced

However, whenever you are in the clinics you will only be allowed to wear professional clothes or scrubs. This means no jeans or open toed shoes. I think you will be in there at least once every other week so you might as well have a pair of scrubs handy. Plus if you ever want to assist any upperclassmen in the clinics the scrubs would come in handy. Good Luck!

This is Mark from D2.....Hope everyone is getting into town OK. If you need
help moving stuff write me back....I should be in SF until school starts.

I'm also writing as my wife is in need of a model for a haircut in her
salon. The haircut is free, but you have to get it on Wed morning at 11AM.
Also the model has to have long hair. Julie will give you a haircut any way
you like in an Aveda salon (these cuts in ths particular salon--Treat is the
name-- start at $55 so it's a pretty sweet deal). Write me back and I'll
give you her number to set this up.

i'm not a D1 but when i WAS a D1, we first met in front of Cole Hall in the medical science building. the med sci building is basically the building right across from Millberry Union. just go in and keep going straight until u see cole hall on your left. of course..this all depends if that's where you guys are meeting...

I know you have answered few question about housing already. just wondering if you have more updated info on either the Ave house or Irving street. Any current residents? How do you like them? Is living on campus cheaper than living off campus? Any input will be appreciated~!!! thanks!!! 😀

There's a place I'm considering living at in the fall, which is a few miles away from UCSF, and is 20 mins by bus.

I was wondering if there is such a thing as convenient parking for students at or near the school. Are there parking permits? Is there street parking available in the day, or in the evenings (after a certain time)?

Hey, i'm thinking of not taking my car to SF, because of parking fees and
I heard public transportation in SF is much better than LA.
Do you guys recommend campus housing or should I look for off campus
apartments? Do most people get into campus housing if they apply?
