i read on their website that you can be admitted without a BS degree if you meet the pre reqs. it also stated that you can obtain your BS from ucsf after your 1st year (or 2nd year) of dental school. is this right? if it is, i might be very intrested!

I saw that too...but a BS doesn't really mean anything once you get your DDS.

it doesnt, your right. but i want to get it to have a bs lol. so are you telling me what i read was right? i can just go to a junior college, take my pre reqs and than apply to ucsf? sounds to good to be true

I don't know the details for sure because I am still a second year undergrad, but it makes sense because you will be taking a lot of science classes in dental school that goes beyond upper div. classes in undergrad schools.

One thing you should know is that not having a BS before starting dental school is a stike against you. I'm not saying it's impossible, people do it all the time, but your app needs to be that much better. UCSF got 2000 apps last cycle and with that many people applying, it doesn't take much to be placed in the "not so good" pile. If at all possible, get your BS by the time you start D-School.

once i take my pre reqs and the dat i can apply right? and if i dont get in i can contiune on with my undergrad work til i get my BS than apply again?

Most people who are planning on going into dental school right after undergrad apply in the summer between their junior and senior year. You'll have a hard time getting into SF (probably most dental schools) if you are planning on getting in w/o finishing undergrad. There will 10x as many applicants with your or better stats who will also have their BA/BS applying. I don't know anyone in my class who didnt receive their bachelors before attending.

You can always apply again, but applying to d school is costly, time and energy consuming.

what happens if someone ends up taking the DAT more than once? do they take the average or the higher of the two?

I got in w/o bachelors, but you must be very impressive for dental schools to even consider you. If you look at statistics at schools, its typically ~1-2% relative to the class size that get in w/o bachelors. Some schools will totally shy away from those w/o the degree. However, you don't know what'll happen for your case unless you try! 🙂

if at all possible, try to take it only once and do well enough to get in!

They don't average the two, but if you take it twice both scores will be reported to the schools. so in a sense this could be good if you do really bad the first time and show them your impressive scores the second time--it shows you're improving yourself.

however, don't take the test the second time if you're not gonna be prepared and do well--that's suicide and doesn't look good to the adcoms. so yes, it's a gamble..hehe 🙂
