Can anyone comment on what Detroit Mercy is like with its increased class size starting last year? From what I understand they have increased to 144.

Example:
1) Is there enough faculty interaction?
2) Quality of instruction? Clinic / Sim Lab time?
3) Enough chairs, patients, scheduling issues?
4) Parking or library too crowded?
5) Overall feel?

I'm probably leaving some things out, but any information would be helpful? Thanks.

Can anyone comment on what Detroit Mercy is like with its increased class size starting last year 2012? From what I understand they will be increasing to 160 in 2013. 🙂

Example:
1) Is there enough faculty interaction? Can you get help when needed?
2) Quality of instruction? Too fast?
4) Clinic / Sim Lab time?
5) Enough chairs, patients, scheduling issues. Do they schedule patients for you?
6) Parking or library too crowded?

I'm probably leaving some things out, but any information about the 2012 class would be helpful? Thanks.

PM "DentalWorks". He's at UDM. He's helpful and usually posts on SDN frequently.

well, the class size did increase, but I was not in that class (my class, 2015, was the last class size of 95). So remember, whatever answers / opinions I give are soley based on what I have 'heard' from the current DS1s (class of 2016).

1) I don't see this being a problem, the class was split in half (80ish students per class). The questions shouldn't be "is there enough fac interaction" but more so "do you want faculty interaction?" lol. A great majority of dental students are solo-learners, most of us don't go to professors office hours. However, if the need arise and you need to speak to professor 1-on-l1, then there shouldn't be a problem at all. I found most DS1 instructors to being helpful and easy to chat with outside classroom.

2) I am noticing that the Class of 2016 (and future classes) have a harder DS1 year than we did. You guys get hit more with overall credits than we (I don't know what the reason was) BUT......... I think your DS2 year is slightly lighter than ours. Overall, its the same pain. As far as sim lab goes, again, you guys are more crammed than we were, but from an overall standpoint, there is only 80 of u in sim lab per session, and USUALLY there are plenty of sim lab instructors to help out everyone.

3) I am not in clinic yet, but the school assigns you patients, but its the students duty to schedule appointments and such.... I don't think this will ever change. No issue here

4) Parking, no problem whatsoever. About 6 months ago, they expanded the parking lot, they can now easily accommodate the entire DS1, 2, 3, and 4 year students in that parking lot (its HUGE). However, during a major exam week (such as midterms and or finals) the library gets over-crowded with DS1 and DS2s ESPECIALLY when its few hours before a major exam. You will always find a place to sit and review in the school (there are alot of empty rooms), it just may not be in the library during the busy times.

5) I love detroit mercy period. I am kinda sad it will all end in 2015.

I saw this post from google and I would like to comment. I'm a current DS1 here (Class of 2016).

1) For sure. I feel like the increased class size did not hamper this at all.

2) Overall, good. Good professors but some not so good professors (just like with any other school). Loved the perio faculty; they are amazing and very approachable!

3) Umm. I don't know about this yet.

4) They recently renovated the parking lot. It's HUGE and a lot more safer now. They removed the street and expanded it now. Parking is definitely not a problem.

Library for the most part is fine but a pain during exams. I feel like it's too small and can get crowded during busy weeks. The printers are ALWAYS jamming. Plus, the library looks kinda dated. But there are places in the dental school where you can study (empty classrooms, student lounge). I've heard that they're doing some renovations to increase study spaces given the DS1 class size in the upcoming fall.

5) Overall, I'm happy here. Don't regret UDM at all though I have some gripes about this place. But no dental school is perfect.
