We all know Detroit... Its unparalleled crime rate... And its stereotype as a "Murder City"... And its recent file for bankruptcy...

Can someone comment on how the specific neighborhood around UDM is? I've lived in "projects" myself for a part of my life here in Toronto, called Regent Park, but Detroit seems to take things to the next level from what I see in pictures and videos...

I'm pretty sure not all of Detroit is like this, but Google Street View of UDM is not very promising

The area around the school is pretty sketchy, on the plus side most every home and business for miles in just about every direction is abandoned so the population is low, fewer people means fewer murderers and car jackers, so you have nothing to worry about.

Doesn't that just mean the population that does live there is going to be that much more desperate?

ever heard of commuting? soon as ur done with school just go straight home. no need to explore the city when u dont feel safe... which i know it is not

haha terrible logic

Does anyone know where you can find useful info on UDM for the interview?

Oh dear...I remember my parents strongly discouraging me from getting my MM at UM in Ann Arbor simply due to its proximity to Detroit.

I am in their 7 year dental program right now, and have a class at the dental school once a week.

The building itself is practically brand-new, and protected more than the average building would be. The highway is about 1/4 of a mile away, and yes, there are "semi-shady" neighborhoods across the street. You do get the occasional email from public safety about an attempted robbery or suspicious activity, but for the most part, the dental students and staff mind their own, and the rest of the public minds their own. The only thing is that you obviously wouldn't want to just walk off the dental campus area or anything, especially alone. (as in any big city. Duhhh.)

Edit: Just as a side note, most of my friends who currently go there COMMUTE, like from Royal Oak or Plymouth. Do not plan on living near the campus if you value your life (ehh a little overdrams, but w/e) unless you live in the riverfront towers or something haha.
