NYU was my first acceptance, and then I was offered a spot off wailist from UDM.
Need make a decision soon, but I can't come to a decision.+pity+

1) Already paid 5K deposit to NYU
2) I like the vibe at UDM, students and faculties are really friendly
3) But UDM is located in D-town (I heard Detroit is a very bad city) whereas NYU is located in NYC
4) Cost: UDM 400k (living expenses included) for 4 years; NYU 480K
5) I have friends living in NYC, couple of my college buddies are going to work in NYC
6) have couple family friends living in michigan
7) I currently living in the east coast, not too far away from NYC
What would you choose?

If i had the choice, id go with udm. Both are great schools and if i can stay away from that city life, and also save money, UDM all the way.

Maybe your buddies can find you a cheap place to live? Share a room to cut your cost of living in half. It will still be more expensive than UDM, but I would say it would be worth it being by friends and living in a much safer city.

What is more important to you? Cost or the benefit of living near friends/home/in an overall more fun/vibrant city?

A dentist I worked for tried to push me to go to my state school (literally in the middle of nowhere) and argued "I'd be too busy to have fun." I chose a little extra debt and a more enjoyable city. You need to be able to enjoy yourself or you will lose it. NYC is ridiculously expensive though....so keep that in mind.

Just some food for thought!

Im going to NYU. I feel like I made a good choice! 4 years of enjoyable life and huge networking with alumni. Everyone knows NYU. Research opportunities are big. New building. My friends are all around. Not as depressing and don't need to worry than detroit city. Im sharing a house with two other ppl and it came out cheaper than I thought.

#3 is on objectively terrible reason to shy away from a school if you do not have a wife or children. The UDM grad dentist I shadowed (tiny female) says safety is a non-issue, and vastly blown out of proportion by people who tend to vastly blow out of proportion the risks of any city. If you are not a *******, you will be fine. Keep track all four years of your classmates at UDM. I will give you $20 for every person for which you can supply irrefutable proof that they were attacked, mugged, assaulted, or anything of the like if they were not walking around alone at night, like they shouldn't be doing in any city regardless of whether or not it is Detroit.

I agree with you. Safety is definitely in your control, but the idea still lingers in your head. It gets dark pretty quickly during the winter. I had no problems going to school near a dangerous city for undergrad (New Brunswick NJ), but crime alerts do happen every other week for assault and robberies on students. Not something that I want to worry about everyday.

Detroit is a dump and similar to the wild west right now. Literally robberies, muggings left and right. The city doesn't have the money to staff an adequate police force. Also it is just kind of depressing and vacant. Try to live with friends and you could cut that living expenses substantially. I say NYU

Thank y'all very much for your help! Just withdrew my offer from UDM.
