Hello! I'm looking for students from each UF campus to give me pros & cons at their site. I'm filling the campus ranking form and other than Gainesville being my top choice and Ste Pete being my last, Orlando and Jax are in joint 2nd. I realize that it is a personal decision but just a little bit of insight would help. Thx.

P.S. For example, is housing more expensive in Gainesville than Orlando? How crowded is it? etc...

Thanks for posting this thread, I too am very confused about which campus too select and would love to hear more.

Why Gainesville??? Believe me. You will get tired of this town within your second year. So depressing other than the actual college itself.

Please advise then which one. I've lived my whole life in big cities and want to live in a medium/small sized town but not a suburb definitely. I don't have a car and don't know how to drive, so I'd prefer a place like SF.

I know the op already picked G-ville as their top pick, it was mine as well. Mainly because I wanted to see the professors and get to know them (so I can get rec letters for residencies later in the game). Gainesville is basically your college town with a small town feel. All the activites are university based, it is definitely a younger town. There are also outdoorsy activies if you are into that, canooing, kayaking, hiking, fishing. I ranked the other campuses based on my familiarity/distance from SoFL, so after Gainesville, Orando 2, St. Petes 3, and Jacksonville 4. I can't really comment on ther other campuses except that I interviewed at St. Petes (bc I couldn't make the G-ville interview) and it is in a really nice area. Very close to the beach. Regarding Cheb's comment about a car, I am sure it is pretty necessary at Orlando and St. Petes because both campuses are outside of the city (not sure about Jacksonville). I have my car in G-ville and I don't use it during classes, but the weekend and evenings I definitely do for shopping/groceries. I do know that one of the requirements for UF is to have reliable transportation for off campus practicums. I am sure you can get rides from classmates in the beginning and be fine, but once the curriculum has more off site programs, a car will probably be necessary at any of the campuses. It is also worth mentioning that there is a huge scooter culture in Gainesville and that could probably work weather permitting.

Thank you for taking the time to write such detailed and explanatory answer. I appreciate it a lot ! :luck:

Not a problem, I needed a break from watching med. chem. lectures. 😉

Thank you for your reply. I have not visited any of the campuses yet and although I'll be attending two UF open house, I was curious which campus to designate as #2. My intentions for picking Gainesville as #1 is because, like you, I wanted to have professors' interaction. But I'm a nontraditional student and too much partying is not for me; I'm more concerned with passing my classes with not as much late night hangovers. That being said, Jax or Orlando can also be #1 because of the smaller class size, however, internet study worries me. So many decisions.... aarrgh. 🙂

So far.... Gainesville (1) Jax (2) Orlando (3) Ste Pete (4)

If I am mainly interested in the Pharm.D /Ph.D joint program and eager to dive into research as soon as possible, should I select Gainesville as the campus where I'll be able to do so ?

After having visited St. Petes for my interview, I can say that I would have chosen it as my second choice had I visited it prior to filling out the ranking form. However, I don't think you will have a problem getting your first choice campus since it is still pretty early and it is not a competition for campuses They just fill up the campuses depending on what you choose (pending spots available).

About the phd/pharmd, I know for sure it takes place in Gainesville. You are probably able to start at the distance sites for the pharmd and transfer to G-ville for the phd related courses/research, if need be. (I am not positive on that, but I am sure there are accommodations) But as you said, you are looking to get started with research as soon as possible, I would think G-ville would be best for you.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you can only do the joint programs in Gainesville. Be sure to stress that in your reasoning to go there. Also you will need a car. You may not need it for your first year because the bus is very reliable in Gainesville (I'm at Jax now but I was there for undergrad) however in your second year you have practicum weekly at an off campus site. I guess you could ride the bus, unless it's outside of the city limits? I would recommend at least getting licensed in case of an emergency.

I agree about Gainesville now that I have visited the town. I remember saying "why, this is it?". The town is old and all that. I would have preferred Orlando as my 1st choice, but I liked the idea of at least having the option of going to class (if it means anything or not). Plus I love Gators Basketball(I can go to the O'Connell Center)!! It's not a perfect world and I have to accept the campus I was assigned to. However, I'm grateful to be accepted at UF. Perhaps, I can swap campus with someone here; preferably someone from Orlando.
