I was wondering who else is a freshman in undergrad right now. It feels like everybody else is either already going to vet school or applying/about to apply to vet school. I just wanna know if there's anybody else who just started college. It can get a little intimidating when everybody else seems to be much farther ahead than you are..

are there any pre-med or pre-vet clubs on your campus? I know that you are specifically talking about on SDN but they are a good place to find people with similar personal and educational goals.

(and side note - I got to know my husband through an AMSA meeting on campus. Just sayin')

There are, but because of my work schedule, the only club meetings I could go to would be the Dairy Science Club meetings and it only consists of 3 people. hahaha And I'm starting to take riding lessons on Tuesdays, so that will be out, too.

One of the girls from my high school is doing pre-vet, too, but because of her personality it's not good to talk about any of it. She just tries to make herself look better than me with everything, disagreeing with everything I do and stuff like that. I am taking a class called animal practicum where we learn a ton of stuff about LA and get hands-on experience every week and because she's so jealous about me taking it and her not taking it, I can't even talk about it. It's not my fault she didn't look into all the possibilities that UGA is offering.. So, so far I haven't met many people doing pre-vet here..

You have a lot of time. Definitely keep looking for opportunities but don't stress too much. You're on the right track!

I'm ok with not going to the clubs, maybe next semester will work out better. It'd just be nice to talk to someone who is at the same stage with the same interests (getting into vet school)..

If your riding lessons are somehow connected to the school (school owns horses, IHSA, etc.), talk to those people. Either they might be pre-vet or know someone who is.
Everyone (except one person) I know from my (small, liberal arts) undergrad that has gone to vet school was on our riding team.

As you get more involved in animal and veterinary related opportunities on campus (which it sounds like you are!) and start to know people better, I'm sure you'll find more.

It's also possible that other freshman just aren't sure what they want to do yet and so aren't broadcasting that they're thinking vet school yet, since they're only freshman.

And, if you compare to when I was a freshman, you are SO much more ahead of me!

The lessons aren't related to school, but my new trainer works at the vet school. And she said she's gonna try to get me a shadowing spot there with either a vet or someone doing research! I'm so excited for that! 😀

I've always wanted to be a vet as a child, but my grades weren't nearly good enough in Germany, so I never knew what to do there. But when I moved to the US, it was like a second chance and I'm doing everything possible to get my dream job, so I have a lot of things planned out. :]

I just started undergrad too (which you know but I figured I'd post anyway) and I've only met pre-meds so far.

I joined the Zoology-Conservation and it's run by the pre-ver adviser. I went up and introduced myself to him and he looked pretty surprised when I said I was pre-vet, lol. I dunno if it was me (could have been since I'm 30+ and my arms are covered in tattoos) or because there aren't many of us. But he told me to make an appointment to see him for my spring scheduling.

I'm thankful to have SDN here because I already know so much about the process of becoming a vet. I am really surprised by the students who are "Pre-Med" yet have zero idea what it takes to get to med school. I just don't understand that.

I'm going to Kent State University. I'd love to get into Ohio State for vet school 🙂

I looked at the Ohio prerequisites just a few minutes ago! I'm gonna e-mail them with a few questions and see how their classes work with my schedule.. 🙂

I'm not sure if it still exists, but I know there was a freshman seminar held at the vet school that's just once a week for an hour credit. I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about, but that can be very helpful.

Also, you have a great resource being on campus at UGA and all, so I'm sure you can always email or set up appointments to talk to an admissions counselor for all your other questions. There are a ton of opportunities available, sometimes you just have to dig a little.

It's not that I have unanswered questions about the vet school admissions process. I have talked to the UGA admissions counselor and we're setting up an appointment to meet in a few weeks. I just want other people that are on the same level as I am to talk to about what we do and how we experience UG as pre-vet students.

There's a freshmen seminar about animal forensics at the vet school but it didn't fit my schedule, so I'm taking one about race horses. :]

That sounds pretty awesome.

Hey!
I'm a sophomore this fall, and I'm still unsure if vet school is what I wanna do, since I started looking into it the spring of my freshman year (along with architecture and cognitive science, lol). So, I have 11 hours of vet experience with a LA vet and 150 hours wildlife, with 25 or so shelter volunteer hours. You're probably WAY ahead of me with animal hours, so I wouldn't feel too behind. There's tons and tons of pre-vets, they probably just don't know about this site yet, or are still lurking.

There's a pre-vet club on campus, with 30-35 people attending the first meeting, but it dwindles down to 15 or so by the end of each semester. I'm not good friends with anyone in the club yet, so I'm pretty much alone in this like you, at least until I get to be more social.

You have a very interesting background, by the way. Germany->US is really cool, especially for someone that lived in a tiny town for 18 years until I moved away for college. Mind if I ask why your family moved here?

I have hundreds and hundreds of animal hours but as sad as it sounds, no vet hours whatsoever. I will though when I come back from Germany after Christmas. I am shadowing a vet there for three weeks.

My mom's company offered her a job here in the States (they have companies in several different countries) and my mom asked my siblings and me if we wanted to go and we said yes. She just kinda told us as a joke in the beginning, not expecting us to take it serious. But we sure did and I think it turned out great for all of us.

I get a chance a second chance at becoming a vet, my brother got to go to college (wouldn't have been able to in Germany) and my sister is having an amazing soccer career here. Is playing in national games for the second year now and went to Sweden for the Junior World Cup two years ago (and won!). There might be some things we don't like here, but in the end it worked out great!

Haha I wouldn't worry about no vet hours, since you have 3 full years to get them. I have a little less time to do so. There are several small animal clinics around, but all but one requires public transportation. I got in contact with several people who work at the clinic that I can walk to, and they're trying to figure out how shadowing will work (I'm assuming that more pre-vets want to shadow there as well)...so I gotta wait it out until they call me back.

That's a really cool story! I'm glad it worked out so well for your family.

Not a freshman, but just wanted to say hi to petpony.🙂 I was a German citizen and toyed with the idea of going to vet school in Germany, but decided against it because I wanted to practice in America and didn't want to go through that whole process. I miss my family very much and visit them as often as possible. Germany is so beautiful. Wish I was there right now!

I am probably gonna practice here too. And I just wasnt good enough in Germany. Haha do you speak German?

Cool! Dann koennen wir ja ueber Sachen reden und die anderen verstehen nichts! ;D jk
