Yes! You’ll get an email about accepted students day where you’ll do all that you’ve mentioned. Parker typically sends an email about all of that after decisions have been released so you should receive it soon

I think this is hard to judge and a very personal question. I am disabled and LGBTQ+ and I withdrew my application from UGA for this reason. But there are others who would feel perfectly safe or don’t care - but I know myself and knew that I would not thrive. It’s personal preference, though obviously I think in the current climate be mindful. Most colleges will be largely progressive themselves.

ETA: Georgia as a state does have some excellent progressives who are fighting the good fight!! It’s why I even applied initially but decided against moving there myself.

UGA is such a big school that there's going to be a wide variety of opinions on any given topics. For example, a few years ago I heard about some people (not students) protesting abortion on campus with some very graphic pictures, but there were also people loudly protesting that those people were there.

In any case, you will find your people. I did my undergrad in MTGs district and we still had an annual city-wide pride celebration. Plus, even if people don't share your political opinions most people are going to have the tendency to be friendly and not let that get in the way. I just wouldn't go discussing politics with flat out strangers

I grew up in GA and you will need to be prepared for an overall conservative lean throughout most of the state, I’m talking trump flags, signs, red hats, the whole nine yards. You can for sure find people who lean liberal/left, I did, even in the Deep South at my undergrad, and ATL has been firmly blue for years. But speaking as someone who went from GA to MN….the cultural shift is wildddd. I went from seeing trump signs at every house to barely seeing anything here. It’s honestly a breath of fresh air for me personally after living there for so long. Universities tend to err more on the left but it’s a large SEC university in the south…there is going to be a conservative lean no matter what. So I would just warn you might have quite a cultural shift from the northeast to GA.


On another note my heart sincerely goes out to everyone who received rejections, I was an IS applicant that was denied 4 separate times and ultimately decided to go OOS for school. If anyone needs/wants to talk privately my inbox is always open. I know how much it hurts/how hard it can be to figure out where to go next from here and I even left vet med for around 3 years and tried another career before I got into vet school. Sending the biggest hugs to all 💙 congrats to those accepted and to those who did not receive the best news; please know this does not devalue you as a person or an applicant.

UGA is such a big school that there's going to be a wide variety of opinions on any given topics. For example, a few years ago I heard about some people (not students) protesting abortion on campus with some very graphic pictures, but there were also people loudly protesting that those people were there.

I went to a big university in the midwest and a group protested there on the main drag of campus too (possibly the same group, because very graphic pictures were displayed). And the usual 'preacher types' that come around yelling about our sins. These characters show up at every public university because they cannot actually be made to leave campus if everything stays peaceful.

Larger universities, in general, lean very left, which is why conservative figures/crowds have a disdain for higher education 😉. If you want, you can check out the voter map by county and see (for any school). It looks like Clarke county was overwhelmingly blue, although the total voter turnout was pretty pathetic

I'm also from the northeast and am going to attend! It's definitely a different climate from home (politically and socially) but Athens itself is pretty liberal, and it seems like there's a v healthy mix of views held by students 🙂 I don't think the student body for the CVM is particularly conservative and they seem to focus a good amount on important social issues in their professional skills courses.

This is also a good question. Honestly I bet you'll find a good mix, probably leaning left for the most part still, regardless of what school you're attending. Based on the nature of the typical vet school class composition, there will most likely be a small % of students that you will expect to be conservative, and they will in fact be conservative (I'll let you use your imagination here).

As a current first year, the cvm student body is very liberal and LGBTQ friendly. A good bit of my classmates are LGBTQ openly and everyone embraces and treats each other all the same. The CVM does a great job at creating an inclusive and diverse environment full of collaboration! Obviously there are some conservatives throughout but so far there hasn’t been a problem

Hi! I am unfortunately on the quarter system, which mean I am currently taking finals and was therefore unable to attend the accepted student day... that being said, for anyone that attended, can you let me know what I missed? Thanks in advance!

They recently redid the curriculum and the students feedback was overwhelmingly positive. You get to do stitches week 1 of first year, you are getting hands in with live animals within your first year too. They are doing the pass/fail curriculum but the students say it helps them be less competitive with one another and is reflective of how you will operate in real life (you either succeed or you don’t. You don’t get a grade in real life). They do have it worked out where if you want to apply for residency they can send your class ranking and all that. They are renovating the “classic campus” for 1st and 2nd year but the facility is already super nice. The new vet learning center is gorgeous and state of the art. You do get to do a little bit of clinical rotation stringing mid October to December of 3rd year, take electives you’re interested in 2nd semester 3rd year and go back to rotations all of 4th year.

They have an open house April 4th so hopefully you can attend that!

Called Parker today to ask about my spot on the waitlist, he did confirm that as of this morning the class is considered 'full.' He did mention however that technically the waitlist is valid all the way through matriculation in case someone who accepted their seat decides to go elsewhere!
