Does anyone know anything about UH JABSOM? I have an interview there next week and I'm trying to find out more about the school. Mainly what the students think of it, what they like/dislike, etc. It's hard to find people who know about the school since their class is so small. And I'm from CA so these med students aren't exactly my neighbors. I've been to HI a couple times and my family is from there so I know all about the people and the atmosphere in general. So any thoughts/opinions on the school and the curriculum and stuff like that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm originally from Oahu and interviewed there last year. The people I spoke to didn't seem terribly thrilled to be there, quite honestly. They show a strong preference for residents, then a preference for people with strong ties to Hawai'i. They have been threatened with probation a number of times, although that seems to be due to relatively minor issues. There is a plan to build a big biomed research complex (not on campus), but I'm not sure when that would happen- the state is in dire financial straits right now.
People do seem to like the PBL, although I had one interviewer last year tell me that students definitely need to be studying for the boards from the get-go on their own. They do rotations through a number of area hospitals, which is great if you plan to practice there. I bet the rotations through Tripler could be very interesting if they allow you to see the military field injuries.
During my tour, I was not terribly impressed with the facilities, but there are a number of things that could make up for that. Namely, the people, the place, the atmosphere of Hawai'i in general. But it is quite hard to get in as a non-resident- understandably, they want to keep their doctors in-state.
Good luck! Have fun while you're there.
