Got an acceptance recently from both schools and really torn between both schools. I’m not a resident of either Texas or Tennessee but it will be a little cheaper for me to go to school.

UHCO - I was impressed by the professors, research, and how early/amount of patient interaction. It’s definitely more expensive to live in Houston.

SCO - I loved the staff/faculty/students, everyone seemed to friendly. The Eye Center was also awesome and classroom/buildings were nice.

Anyone have any thoughts or opinions of either school?

I second this question, curious for peoples points of view

Out of curiosity were you given scholarships to either school?

could you explain the early/amount of patient interaction for UHCO?

Yeah, I spoke to students that day at UH and the faculty. UHCO let’s stufents start seeing patients 2nd semester of 2nd year. Normally this occurs in 3rd year. I also believe they told me contacts/fitting start earlier as well.

SCO student here. I can’t speak on behalf of UHCO, but I’m very happy with my choice to attend SCO. The friendliness of the staff and students is not a facade, and the facilities are top notch. The professors genuinely care about their students’ success. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I think I’m really learning towards SCO because of all the things you mentioned and the price is a bit cheaper.

How do you enjoy living in Memphis? And is there much research going on at SCO? Thanks!

I really enjoy it! Beale street is awesome and there are a bunch of random fun things to do around here that you wouldn’t expect. The cost of living is definitely a plus. Most students live on mud island which is really nice and very affordable. As far as research goes, I don’t think SCO is as big on it as other schools may be.

SCO had the highest pass rate of Board Scores in the nation last year.

SCO has very high patient encounters,1st semester second year are already doing screenings (chair skills, retinoscopy, direct ophthalmoscopy) on patients .Not only do they have the largest stand alone eye clinic in the US but have several very nice primary eye care clinics sprinkled around Memphis.

The staff from administration to security are genuinely friendly,no act there.

How/Why did you decide on SCO, I was given a scholarship UHCO is still (slightly) cheaper, any regrets? pros/cons
Hi, how much scholarship did UHCO offer? Did you receive it with your acceptance letter?

UH waived my out of state tuition and gave me in-state tuition price and an extra like $1000. So, that’s like $20,000 waived I think? And yes, it came on my acceptance letter.

Have you decided on what school you wanted to go to?
Also, how long did it take for both UHCO and SCO to contact you after your application was verified? I submitted my application a week ago and I haven't heard anything back, so I'm getting really impatient 🙁

I have! I’m going to SCO! 😀
So, SCO sent me an email right after I submitted (but not verified yet) and told me to email them when it was verified. So I emailed them the day my file was verified (abt 1 week after submitted) and then emailed me right back to set up an interview.
Rumor has it, UHCO can take a really long time to get back to you. But for me, they emailed me about a week after my application was verified to do an interview!
Both schools were really awesome but SCO just felt more like home/comfortable for me.

Hey! Did it come in the mail or email? How long did it take for you to get the mail? I’m still waiting for mine /:
