I was accepted and paid my deposit for UHCO in April . Now, SCO offers me a seat in their 2014 class.
SCO and UHCO are both on top of my list.

- SCO will be ~20k cheaper than UHCO for me (for the whole four years)
- 5 hrs drive from home for SCO while UHCO is 10 hrs
- I have pick and apply for an apartment for UHCO.
- However, both schools are appealing to me.

If anyone knows anything about either school, let me have some feedback! I want to make a well-informed decision that I wont regret in the next four years.

Thanks in advance

I think you will do great at both schools!! Saving money is a plus...it's 20k+interest! Also, you will save a lot driving/flying home since SCO is closer.

My vote is SCO, but I am biased. 🙂

Both are good schools.
Don't undervalue the close proximity to home. One family emergency and the ability to go home over Thanksgiving, Easter, etc. will make you appreciate being close to home.

Hi Teh, if you'd like my take on UHCO, feel free to PM me! Good luck with your decision 🙂

Both are great schools. Houston is a more diverse and larger city than Memphis. The cost of living is higher in Houston. Memphis is more conservative but very cheap. Houston has a decent split between Hispanic, Caucasian, and African Americans. Memphis is primarily African American and Caucasian with trace amounts of Asians and Hispanics. Memphis has BBQ and musical history concerning rock and blues. Houston has Tex Mex and Mexican food and Texan culture (rodeo, chili, country music, southern hip-hop). If money is the main issue then SCO is your college.

It's primarily African American. In the clinic, it's pretty rare to have a Caucasian patient. But all your other points are right on! 😀

Correct me if I'm wrong, but ALMOST any page you see on sd with SCO versus optometry school X will be met with going to SCO will save you $$. While money is important, it is not everything. However, remember that both schools award the Doctor of Optometry degree and will teach you what you need to know to be successful. Personally, I would pick SCO and never think twice about it (I am not a SCO student).

Whats wrong with it being "more conservative"? It sounds like something determental the way you worded it.
Also, look at what current SCO student posters (such as JMU07 above) have been saying, that there is a large African-American population in Memphis. In general, the African-American community is predominantly liberal.

Yeah I did word it that way. It's not a bad thing, depends on the individual. I just figure that a liberal environment is more diverse which is nice when going to college. This is all in comparison to Houston which is larger. But this is grad school so I guess the exploration phase is over. But the large AA pop in Memphis doesn't mean it's left. I would reserve liberal for a city like Los Angeles.

Shelby County is predominantly left-leaning.

I don't mean that Memphis is "left". I just feel like you think it's more conservative than it actually is. My advice to you, PM this JMU07 poster that seems willing to help you about Memphis.

thanks everyone for your advice. It turn out that I could not get the contract seat at SCO. As for UHCO, I could apply to get the in-state-tuition after one year. UHCO would save me 20k vs going to SCO, so I decided to go to UHCO with this reason and others.

Once again thanks for all of your comments
