Hey does anyone have any information about UIWSO's curriculum? I remember some of the classes Mr. Cantu talked about during the interview but I was wondering if their was an actual class/curriculum list floating around.

.Curriculum Overview.

First Professional Year highlights:

  • Basic & Intermediate Optometry course sequence (fundamental theory and technical skills of optometric examination and history taking)
  • Optics (Principal, geometric, visual and applied) course series..
  • Basic Sciences with clinical emphasis: Clinical gross, ocular and neuro-anatomy, Histology, Clinical human Physiology, Histopathology, Immunology and ocular biochemistry/molecular biology.
  • Vision Science
  • Orientation to patient care, ethics and healthcare systems

Second Professional Year highlights:

  • Advanced Optometry
  • Clinical and applied Pharmacology
  • Ocular Sciences (e.g. ocular physiology, ocular pharmacology, binocular vision, vision science)
  • Ocular and organ pathology (e.g. anterior/posterior ocular pathology)
  • Clinical studies (Pediatric Optometry, Contact Lens)
  • Regular involvement in patient care: Clinical Internships

Third Professional Year highlights:

  • Twelve-months of concentrated clinical activities in UIWSO's clinical facilities and clinical outreach programs.
  • Patient Care Integrated Case analysis
  • Clinical medicine and Physical diagnosis
  • Ocular disease studies (Glaucoma, advanced posterior ocular pathology, neuro-ophthalmic diseases)
  • Further clinical studies (strabismus, vision therapy, advanced contact lens, low vision)
  • Optometric Business aspects and coding/billing
  • Optometric law and Jurisprudence

Fourth Professional Year Highlights:

  • Twelve-month of rigorous involvement in patient care (rotations in the following services: adult primary, pediatrics, contact lens, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy and advanced disease)
  • Further studies in advanced clinical and practice management
  • Clinical Internship & Externship rotation at clinical facilities such as private practices, referral centers, veterans affairs medical centers, and optometric clinics in military installations.
