Hi all,

I'm borrowing a thread from pre-allo here - thought it might be interesting to see how we view the issue?

What is the best town to live in while attending pharmacy school? Sure, you'll most likely choose your city - but why?

I'm seeing a lot of Boston, Chicago, and even a vote for Boise, ID on pre-allo...

If you can afford it San Francisco is pretty cool. A lot of diversity. However, California is quite crowded to say the least and everyone is always in a hurry to get nowhere - a lot of people may come off as superficial, selfish, and rude. I am a native Californian and I loved growing up here but after moving back as an adult (I lived in Arizona, Texas, and Iowa in between) I am ready to get out. I know this thread is about cool places and I don't mean to beatdown Cali because a lot of people love it - obviously given the population. SF is a great place if you have a liberal mindset, or even mildly conservative one - very diverse, plenty of things to see or get involved in if you have the time, interesting weather patterns, and lots of intelligent people. The one big drawback is the cost of living. SoCal is different than NorCal too. I am originally from LA but have not lived there in about 15 years so I will let the homies from that area give their 2cents on that.

Austin,Texas is great
Iowa City is the place to be if in Iowa and if you can handle a Midwest winter
Glendale Arizona has a much better winter than Iowa - went to high school about a mile or so from MWU

That is about all I know.

I wouldn't feel comfortable any place where everyone is wearing cowboy hats. Texas is out. I would go with Vancouver, Canada. Very beautiful, stable temperatures, clean streets, near the ocean, an educated and civil society with a lot of diversity.

There is a misconception that all Texans wear cowboy hats and boots. We ride bulls for fun in the weekend. If you want fun I think Houston is the place to be.

I am not from Texas (attended college here- UT) and I love Austin b/c Austin is not Tx (it's a great mix of the west coast and east coast). And you shouldn't be so naive as to say that all people who live in Tx wear cowboy hats. People come from all over (CA, NY, Boston, DC, philly, Chicago...etc) to be a part of the scene in Austin. Austin is the number one single city in the US, is very diverse, and it's deemed one of the best cities to live in. It's even been called the music capital of the world. There are highly educated people who live there and the University of Texas is a great school with great faculty. Austin is one of the most beautiful cities you will ever visit (there may not be an ocean but there is Lake Travis and Lake Austin). As much as I don't care for Tx and am counting the days to leave- I'm about set on living in Austin for the rest of my life (that will be the only place I will ever live in Tx).
Again, educate yourself before you say anything that might make you appear less than worldly. It's like saying people who live in South America live in trees and swing with the monkeys (had someone say that to me).

If you like getting drunk, there's no better place than Morgantown, WV!

..seriously. Our student union is right next to all the bars where you can drink as long as you're 18, and on Thursday-Saturday they give you free food. Usually nachos and cheesesteaks or chicken sandwiches until midnight, and after that it's breakfast food. The campus 'security' and the local police only look at you weird if you can walk a straight line.

WV is a great state... Morgantown... is eh.

Philadelphia is a great city, though safety can be an issue depending on where you are.

I must be blind then. I've lived in Texas for 20 years, and I saw more cowboy hats when I lived in the East coast.

I know you're joking (Savannah, GA), but I couldn't resist replying to this one...I lived in Fargo, ND for three years while my mom went to pharmacy school. It was so cold, I had to wear a facemask to walk the eight blocks to school. I live in Michigan now, and I still think it's too cold. Maybe I'll move to Arizona after pharmacy school... 😎

Well as I had mentioned to you once before Iowa City is probably the best place to be if you are going to be in Iowa. Unfortunately I did not go to school there so I cannot say what makes it so great other than by comparing it to the rest of the state. I do have some friends that went to Iowa and they loved it. All were from Iowa except one who is from Naperville, IL. Two of them went to pharmacy school there and enjoyed it. They are all big Hawkeye fans and they went to all the sporting events and everything. I guess it's cool because it has a big city appearance (by Iowa standards) but a small town feel to it and it's not too far from Chicago. Other than the cold and the strict law enforcement I can't think of any other negatives.

I'll second that. I lived in Austin for 3 years. It's definitely different from Ft Worth, Dallas, SA, and Houston but it does have a little Texas spice to it and that is what makes it so great. Texans take great pride in their state. Austin is a terrific city. Of all the places I have lived it is by far my favorite. If I had to move back to Texas, Austin would be my only choice.
