1. Ask the program if they have any special rates with area hotels
2. Check craigslist - private homes will rent you a room for the night
3. Occasionally, programs have residents who will offer a couch for out of town interviewees.

good advice. thanks.

when i was applying to medical school, it was totally fine to ask about staying at another student's room. but is it as apporpriate for residency (esp surgery?). it may totally be, i'm just asking.

also, should i just ask the administrative secretary? because so far it doesn't seem like that info is being offered out in the two interviews i've already received.

thanks

Last year I tried myinterviewtrail.com There weren't many dates that worked out for me to share, but you might have better luck. It seemed legit, and asked for a .edu email to try to keep it to just students

They have loans specifically for this problem. Nobody has money at this stage....but it's creepy to ask to bunk with strangers to save a little cash....I definitely would not bring it up to the residency coordinator.....it might create negative attention.....

I can assure you it is legit; I worked with the University of Michigan surgery resident who was the initial developer of the website. It only started last December, so it was still new when I interviewed. I used it last year for a couple of interviews and it worked well.

Also, check with your school's student affairs office; they may have a listing of alumni who will house interview candidates.

I advocate using Priceline, especially for rental cars. Got some FANTASTIC deals lst year.

I would also check the Pre-Allo forum; they have a bed availability list...if you don't mind staying with med students.

As otherwise noted, many people take out loans because you can easily spend $5000 on residency interviews. Most of us don't have that kind of cash.

good advice! i will sign up for the interview trail thing, and i will ask my student affairs office about an alumni list.

Dr. Cox; where is this "bed list"? sorry - i went to the pre alo forum but couldn't find it.

thanks again everyone. good luck!

If the place you're interviewing has hostels, they are almost always cheaper than hotels. You could also look into couchsurfing.com (at least I think that's the site). It's a network of people willing to let you crash at their house.
