UMass Worcester

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I might have missed this, but how does UMASS send out acceptances, email or snail mail? Thanks!

They sent me an e-mail, with a letter via snail mail shortly thereafter. I don't know the details on the snail mail, since I was on vacation and it arrived some time during that period.

Edit: Acceptance letter was sent First Class on Jan 12th, e-mail was sent a day before that.

Has anyone else heard anything????

Jathin- congrats on your acceptance! It's a great school. I interviewed in October as well and haven't heard anything yet. My stats aren't the greatest- 29T MCAT, 3.7 gpa- can I ask what yours are like? Just curious...

Hi All - just got an interview!!

Secondary completed late november

Don't set your alarm clock. None of us wants more competition 🙂

J/k- It's really laid back. Just be yourself.

I interviewed at UMass last year on 11/1 and didn't hear anything until end of April/beginning of May. According to half of my class (first year), there's only a handful of people that heard before then (out of 107).

Good luck to those of you waiting!

And ps.... I don't think there are any yacht clubs on Lake Quinsig...

Good luck with the interview! Just stay relaxed and act confident. We spent less than 25% of each interview talking about medicine. I don't know if that's typical, but I guess it worked...

For my acceptance, I got an e-mail on 11/16 (interviewed 10/16). Snail mail came a couple days after the e-mail. A few days after that, I got a call from one of my interviewers.

so I just got an email requesting I interview at UMass on March 26th? I thought all interviews had to be done by march 15th...do people think this is an interview for the waitlist? Has this happened to anyone else?
background info (I applied two years ago and interviewed at UMass in october, was waitlisted and then never admitted)

Hey I also got the email today for interviewing on march 26th. How can u tell if its for a wait list position or a real position.

Last day for interviews is March 26th. Whether it's for a "real" spot or not, I don't know. Maybe they have handed out the 100 or so spots by then and maybe not, but as long as you have an interview you have a shot, and that's all you can ask for...especially since there is waitlist movement.

I don't know if there are people in my class who interviewed in March. Then again, once you're in school, you stop talking about that sort of stuff after the first month.

Good luck to those with interviews ahead...and for those of you who are still waiting, hang in there. it sucks...a lot. UMass made me wait almost 5 months before I heard back post-interview. It was brutal, stressful, and nerve-wrecking, but worth it in the end.

Invite 10/22
interviewed 12/11
Accepted 1/25 (email)
Instate applicant. Hope this helps.

Got accepted today!! Interviewed 10/17. (Expels breath that has been held for 3 months.) Good luck to the rest of you- I'd love to get to know the people who are definitely attending! :luck:

Congrats!

Still holding my breath!
Interviewed ~early September
No word yet!
😕

do you lose access to your peoplesoft account after your interview? I lost access and it's making me uneasy...

Peoplesoft is a REALLY quirky system. I have to use it for work, and it sucks- I couldn't believe that UMass's secondary was on it too! If you're trying to log in on safari, usually switching to mozilla or explorer will help. If not, it might be that you need to reset your password- I had to do that a couple of weeks ago, for no particular reason that I could figure out. If you still can't get on, try calling admissions- I would be willing to bet that it's not you, it's them 😉.

Have any of you guys tried Early Decision for UMass? I'm thinking about it when I apply this summer.

just got an interview invite for 3/26 tried to switch it to an earlier date but they told me they all booked and this is the only spot they got... ooh well I guess its better than nothing... It's my#1 choice so I hope I still got a shot with such a late interview invite...

True but after that you get to wait for months until you hear something🙂 Seriously anybody get accepted besides twilight? (Yes, I'm still waiting with fingers crossed.)

I just got an acceptance email this morning, so exciting! 🙂 (I interviewed on 1/15)

Congrats - mine just came too!

Nice for you that you heard so quickly. My interview was on 9/19, so I've been waiting a while for this email.

(subject line in my inbox was "ACCEPTANCE TO THE UNIVERSITY O" - so I had to open up the email to see that it was UMass.)

I was just wondering all of you who got accepted into UMASS are you planning to go there? I looked at some mdapp profiles and saw that many were accepted to other schools...just wondering whether umass is your first choice or not

If all schools were on an even playing field in terms of tuition, I would say UMass would be middle of the pack for me. However, the incredible tuition package and the fact that my family lives in Worcester makes it a lot more appealing. It will be a hard choice to make later this spring.

I hate to admit it, but UMass is not my first choice. However, I don't have any other acceptances.

you got great stats... whats your first choice? columbia or mt sinai?

Thanks! I was told that lack of clinical exposure is the major flaw in my app (one of my Mt. Sinai interviewers let me know this...).

Columbia's my first choice. I loved everyone I met: the tour guides were chill, the interviewer was fun and relaxed, and the secretary was very sweet.

Mt. Sinai, Dartmouth, and UMass are in a three-way tie for second.

Columbia was great, I hope you get in! I think it's so cool you're studying pastry arts, I would LOVE to do that if I could!!!

Congrats to everyone who got accepted today! Regarding first choice or not- I'd be interested to hear what other people think. I got accepted to UMass before going on any other interviews- I was supposed to go to Drexel and NYMC this week, and I cancelled those. I have another one upcoming at the end of the month at UVM. I'm curious- most of the people on this thread who've said UMass isn't their first choice are deciding between UMass and upper tier schools like Dartmouth, Columbia, etc. Since I'm not , what do you guys think? Should I have gone on those other interviews just to see what the other schools are like? I still have the option to reschedule Drexel if I want to, but UMass has great tuition, is close to my family, and is great for primary care. I think I should just not worry about interviewing at other places, but I wanted to see if anyone else here who has been on other interviews has advice or additional perspective about that. What say you?

I think you should only interview at another place if you know it'd be tough to decide between that school and UMass. I canceled interviews at Albert Einstein and Tufts, because I knew that I wouldn't have gone if I had been accepted. No competition at all.

I have a friend at UMass, and he says the community's pretty supportive, relaxed, and happy. My experience during my interview suggests that he's right on target.

Columbia was great, I hope you get in! I think it's so cool you're studying pastry arts, I would LOVE to do that if I could!!!

Oh man. I'm nervous. I'm getting cramps in my forearms, because I've been crossing my fingers for the past month!

Pastry is so amazingly fun and intense. There's a freakish amount of multitasking, and you have to make absolutely sure that everything comes out just right. Getting everything to work and putting out a good product... is such a high. 🙂 I just got out of class about an hour ago and today we made: almond croissants, ham and cheese croissant, an alsatian cheese tart, soft rolls, oatbread, sweet potato brioche... 😀 If I weren't going to med school, I'd definitely become a pastry chef.

Maybe you could try taking an amateur class at a culinary school near where you'll be attending med school? If you end up in NYC, the amateur classes at the French Culinary Institute are taught by the same chef-instructors who teach the career classes. You could easily do a 10-30 hour program and pick up knife skills or learn how to make chocolates!

Has anyone else heard back from UMASS?

I wish they would let more people know if they're even in the running. I know I'm borderline acceptable...

so many "I wish I would have..."s torturing me!🙁

Based on the replies and acceptances posted on SDN(a very small and highly biased sample!), it looks as though UMass gives out a limited number of acceptances every two weeks (1/11, 1/25, 2/8) and that, at least for January, the drag time is 3.5 weeks between interview to acceptance (those interviewed on 1/15 heard on 2/8 for instance). The acceptances seem to always go out on Fridays. This pattern appears to apply best to those interviewed in Winter (January and on) and not fall interviewees.

Based on the above, those who interviewed on 1/30 should hear this Friday 2/22, etc, etc.

Since the last interviews are on 3/26, I am guessing the first big batch of acceptances will go out 4/18. Just guessing, but I bet they wait to hear back from the first batch of acceptances to see who is going to attend and then send out a second batch based on who declined in the first batch. This second batch goes out probably late April or early May. My guess is they repeat this process until their self-imposed deadline of May 15, at which point they notify everyone and draw up a wait list based on movement in April, # of applicants, acceptances etc. Those who are interviewing late should not fret as I bet only about a dozen or so spots are filled by the end of March. This is all purely guess work, so please don't quote me or take this as fact.

Obviously from previous years we know that the April/May notification is when MOST people will get the news.

Word of advice: if you don't hear back the Friday 3.5 weeks after your interview then you will probably not hear until May so stop fretting and/or plan to study if you're taking the MCAT again cause you won't hear until after the April test dates.

Hope this helps soothes some nerves.... I know after this Friday, I will try to put it out of my mind until the end of April!

I don't know if you should wish so hard. I mean they do send out rejects even at this stage. (Yes, I have a reason to know this🙁 )

Thanks, Dave. Are you applying to UMASS this year?

It's Friday! Let's see if the predictions about Fridays are accurate =D

Good luck, everyone!

I think at this point, any type of closure would be a relief.

I'm guessing the snowstorm delayed any acceptances being sent out... unless somebody heard from UMass?

Well, time to go enjoy the snow!

I'm guessing you mean for the 2008 cycle. Actually no but that's mostly because I took the MCAT in 2005. (They only accept a MCAT taken within the previous 3 years so this one has expired and I'm in no mood to retake it.) Of course if they changed their policy I'd apply but fat chance of that.

so did any acceptances go out today? anyone hear??

Had an interview in beginning of January and haven't heard back yet. Most likely got to wait until April/May now.

Did anyone hear anything today??? I am dying to know if they are sending any more acceptances before May...😕

Just got the email (11am on 3/7)...complete in August, interviewed in November...

good luck all!

got the email today as well, looks like the friday hypothesis is correct.

Congrats to all who got in, and good luck to those waiting, they are a slow bunch, so no worries

still waiting... waiting... waiting.

for today's acceptees, would you mind sharing your stats?

To the people that got in today, could you please post your stats and your interview date? Thanks.

I interviewed in mid-September

my stats are 3.5 / 3.8 BCPM, 37R

I interviewed for the MD/PhD program, so those applications probably get processed a little differently

I got the email yesterday too 🙂 I wan't expecting to hear until May, but I guess they are starting to let people know...I think the acceptances are trickling out, so don't fret if you haven't heard.

I interviewed on 1/15.
Stats: 3.27 GPA, MPH (3.85 GPA), 31O MCAT

As you can see, my stats aren't the strongest, so to everyone still waiting, keep your heads up!

Hahaha...I had the same reaction...I was like "sweet, I am in, but where??"

congrats all!! that so exciting!! i'm scheduled to interview 3/26, the very last day...but i still have hope due to Umass' late decision making...hope to see you all next year if i'm fortunate enough!
