UMD vs. Howard

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just wondering if any current UMD or Howard students can weigh in on the pros and cons of each school. I'm trying to decide which school to pick!!!

First off, I apologize for any typos. I'm responding on the mobile app. Please feel free to ask additional questions.

I'm a student at Univ. Of Maryland SOP. I couldn't be happier with my choice.

Pros:
The teachers are very, very good. There are tons of opportunities to get additional experience. There are different pathways one can take if you're interested in these areas: pharmacotherapy, research, and geriatric care. It isn't difficult to find a job as a student in this area. There are also lots of research opportunities. There are opportunities to get dual degrees. There are interesting university-wide interprofessional events where you can work through problems with other professional students -- social work, law, medicine, dentistry, nursing, etc. The faculty really care about your success. It appears that things are run very effectively. There are strong ties to NIH and Hopkins. Baltimore's a neat city that's not too expensive. Decent housing for not too much.

Cons:
Maryland is expensive if you're an out-of-state student. It's possible to get in-state tuition, though, after a year. I am also not a huge fan of the structure of the curriculum. It seems a bit disjointed, but from what I understand the new incoming class will have a modified curriculum. I don't know any specifics, and I've only heard that from other students, not any faculty or staff. Baltimore can be a little rough for some. I personally don't have any issues with it, but I have friends who feel uncomfortable at night.

Hey yossarian87, do you mind me asking how much you pay for housing there? Is it cheaper than when you were in LA? Also, any luck with the in-state tuition? Any info would be much appreciated! 🙂

I'll PM you specifics regarding the housing questions.

Re: In-state tuition, I won't know about how easy it is to get for a while -- August at the earliest, from what I understand. I'm a P1, so this year I'm paying OOS tuition.

Had my interview, it went well. I'm waiting to hear back. okay so I got a 90% on the PCAT, my GPA is 3.1 and I have a masters in a medical science area. Is this enough to get an acceptance? I mean I'm so nervous because VCU and howard want their deposits verrryyy soon!!
