do you guys have housing yet?

Out of curiousity what other programs did you guys apply to and turn down? I applied and was rejected because according to the dean "The program would not be ideal for someone with my background" (i.e. someone in need of a gpa boost). He went on to say that a program like Georgetown's would be much more helpful for someone who has ambitions of medical school. I did end up recieving an acceptance from Georgetown and Drexel so I did not get an acceptance because of a poor application. Just curious as to what other options you guys had and why you chose UMDNJ.

Congrats on getting into GT! I am still waiting to hear from them myself, but am not holding my hopes up. I also got into the Barry University program.
That is weird, because I also am in need of the gpa boost and UMDNJ accepted me. I don't think i will get into GT which is my top choice and I think probably a better program.

Still working on it. Still trying to decide...solo or roomate, walking distance to campus or drive? etc.
Here is my list of "neighborhoods" so far, just keep in mind it is not complete and I don't really have a sense of where they are in relation to campus:
Highland park
Jersey City
Kerny
Society Hill
Bloomfield
Montclair
Nutley
Belleville
Union
Elizabeth
Springfield
North Brunswick(about 6 miles form Rutgers)
Hoboken

also in my internet searches I am using craigslist, rent.com and here are a few local websites I have been searching on:

Websites for housing:
www.Homehunters.net (195 fee)
www.fastrental.com
www.maigie.com (realtor with rentals in Hoboken)
www.offcampusnetwork.com
www.jerseycityhomestore.com
www.roompals.com
www.marylisarentsmontclair.com
www.hobokenrooms.com
www.libertyrealestate.com

Hope this helps some one!
Marcia

does anyone know about how many medschool classes you get to take during this program?

15 credits worth (out of 30 total for the program).
MGM is 7 (fall)
Histo/Physio are 5 each (spring)
Neuro is 4 (spring)

I'm not sure about the others. They're in the course list, if you're really interested.

Now what...i just got my acceptance and am clueless on what to do next....i heard so many different things about the city and how "terrible" it is.....to the people who were accepted...are you guys living alone or with roommates and where are you looking?...also....i was considering living out and buying a car....is this a bad idea?....im in california...so checking the place out will be a one time thing....pm me if you guys are looking for roommates!...see you this fall

I just got accepted as well. I called the school to ask how many medical school courses are offered through the program, and they told me just ONE (Molecular and Genetic Medicine)! Furthermore, that out of the approximately 100 students they admit to the masters program only about 20 students actually are able to enroll for the class, before they are put on a waitlist.

So I am wondering what Paradiselost was talking about:

15 credits worth (out of 30 total for the program).
MGM is 7 (fall)
Histo/Physio are 5 each (spring)
Neuro is 4 (spring)

If anyone can confirm or dispell this rumor (abbeacon) that would be great.
I dont want to go to a program offering only one med school course.

Hey guyz,

Well, I applied for MD schools last year and didn't get one interview. So, that's why I've decided to get a Master's. I really only want to spent at most 1 calendar year in the program. So far, I've gotten into BU, Drexel MSP, and UMDNJ. The Drexel MSP is 2 years, so I'm trying to decide between BU and UMDNJ. Anyone else get accepted to both and know why they chose UMDNJ over BU? If so, please write back and help a brotha out. Haha. Can the UMDNJ program be completed within a year? I've been reading some of the posts and it seems like you guyz are saying it'll take 2. I don't plan on applying until June of 2006 anyways, so i guess i can go over 1 year, but 1 year would be my ideal limit. Anyways, I'll stop rambling, so that someone can give me a straight up answer. Thanks guys.

John

it can be done in 1 year..i think most people do 1.5.....

I talked to Dr. Ingoglia today, and he told me that actually students are allowed to take no more than two medical school classes during the program. Like I said, the first being Molecular and Genetic Medicine and the other a Physiology/Cell Biology 5 credit hour class in the spring. He said that they show preference to the the more accomplished students entering the program as far as seats in these medical school courses is concerned. The committee actually sits down and hand picks the students that will sit in these courses (app. 1/3 of the class). I hate the fact that I have no guarantee that I will be able to take these medical school classes. This program isn't as shiny as I once thought.

Also, my AIM screen name: rza1379

That really sucks. My understanding is that the program has increased in size over the past few years. Perhaps it's reached the point that they are unable to accommodate all the MS in Biomedical Sciences students. I've been told that BU's MA in Medical Sciences program has two tracks. But in either track, you're guaranteed at least two med courses. UMDNJ's program is significantly cheaper, but if you're not guaranteed at least a few med courses...that pretty much defeats the purpose of an SMP.

Sucks for me...I'll be commuting from Central Jersey via train... 😱

so what areas in NEWARK ok to live in? anyone have any suggestions?

OK, so I talked with UMDNJ office today. They are looking to send out registration packets in mid July. It wil include info on registering for courses, including schedules, and health insurance, among other things.

I also discussed the medical school classes versus regular grad school classes. Honostly, they are both difficult and at a very high level (for example she said the MGM med school course and the Fundamentals are about the same in difficulty.) Which is good for those like me who need to prove academic stamina. Also the med school class is 7 hours, which does not leave you much room to screw up, since the entire program is 30 hours. I went through the class list/course and found that there are so many exciting classes (immunology, pathology, teratology, anatomy, histology, etc) that I am going to have a hard time limiting it to just 30 hours. Really. Regardless, when you are done, you have a masters degree from UMDNJ which will kick butt on your application. 🙂

OK, so I was wondering if folks would be interested in me setting up a Yahoo group account for us to communicate with. This way we don't loose our "thread" in the hundreds of other topics out there. I know that the georgetown smp program starts a new group each year as a way to communicate not only prior to the program but also during.

If intersted please post and let me know. If a bunch of folks are interested then I will create a group and people can join at their convenience. 🙂

does the group exist? I tried to search and join but it came up with nothing....

I tried to searcha nd came up with nothing also, however I have already had one person join (but I invited them directly) I am asking yahoo right now why the group does not seem to be public, even though it says it is.

I will post again once i can bring up the group myself.

I am having a really hard time getting the group to show up on the search. I have not been able to figure out why. I even deleted the original and recreated without the special character.

So try putting this URL into the web address:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/UMDNJGSBS05

This should let you get to the group. If it doesn't please IM with your email address and I will send you a direct invite which I know works.

Thanks, Marcia

Ok.. So i'm hoping to head to UMDNJ also, and see the overwhelming acceptance to the post-BA program. I have only one question.

WHO DIDN'T GET ACCEPTED????? And what were your stats?

student loans ARE financial aid.

monu1234 said:
So i talked to a Ms. Jackson at 973-972-4376 about financial aid. She told me that we don't actually qualify for financial aid. We just qualify for students loans. We directly take out a loan of $18,500 per year. $8,500 of which is unsubsidized and the other $10,000 is subsidized. I think unsubsidized means that there is no interest added on while you are in school and subsidized means that interest is added on. Can someone please tell me if my understanding of this subsidization buisiness is correct? Also, how can there be no financial aid whatsoever???? 😡

thank you abbeacon. my morale has actually improved since attending school in newark. many will tell you that you will get the best training of your career in newark. before you judge it, live it. and if you've judged it already, go live somewhere else, please.

jersey, only the stong survive. 😀

well this was quite the informative and objective post...

I can't speak for your experiences in calcutta.. but as someone who's been in newark for the past 3 years (grad + med), your assessment of newark is kinda skewed. I guess my first question is: did your "research" actually involve visiting the umdnj campus and its surrounding areas where you would get your proposed cup of coffee, or is it just based on a trip to newark airport? Did your research involve asking peoples' opinions who actually know about and/or live in newark, or was it just based on googling "newark and carjacking"?

Like any urban environment, you have to be careful of what you do, when you do it, and who you do it with... for example, I always lock my doors when driving in newark and tend to drive on major streets to and from school. I don't walk alone at night, and always watch my surroundings. These precautions are not exclusive to newark. However, I have taken the 30-min walk from campus downtown to the train station alone in the daytime; I recently walked around newark's branch brook park alone for 3 hours, taking pictures of the cherry blossoms (bbpark has a greater number/variety of cherry blossoms than DC) with my $400 digital camera + tripod, and felt completely safe on both occasions. So kindly don't single out newark as being unique when it comes to safety and crime.

You cite hoboken and manhattan as living options.. if you can afford them, go right ahead.. but you'll be shelling out a rediculous--and I think unnecessary--amount of money for a cramped apartment. I would estimate about 30% of students live in the Society Hill townhouse complex surrounding the university. I personally don't live there, but many of my friends do. It's more expensive than living in a suburban town (e.g., bloomfield, montclair, nutley, belleville, union, elizabeth, springfield), but you're basically paying for the convenience. Car theft is a problem in this area, especially if you park on the street. Most people have clubs or other security devices. many students who live in Society Hill leave their cars parked on-campus when they return home. I haven't had any problems with parking security/theft on-campus (surface lot or parking deck).

UMDNJ is constructing on-campus housing set to open in fall 2006, which might be something to consider. I don't have any information on prices or types of rooms, but it will be fully secured and monitored, and right on campus.

I can't speak for your expectations of where you'd like to live, and maybe you would indeed be miserable living in/around newark. But try to be accurate and objective in your portrayal of things... In this post, I'm not trying to paint newark as a wonderful oasis, rather to present it as accurately as possible.
