just tell your relatives to give you a letter saying that you will be living with them for the next couple of years. i think i might do the same and save about $24,000+ on living. I forgot the ladies name in charge. see you in august

Add me to the list - I think I'm hopping on board, all IBM reservations notwithstanding 😀 .

Just a residency question - if I am planning on staying with s relative in NJ, and thus saving myself a rather hefty chunk of cash in rent, how do I go about obtaining residency? I can get the NJ lisence no problem, but everything else is a bit of an issue. And what is the name and contact info of the whole residency-determining person at UMDNJ?

What are the good places to live for dental students? Particularly married dental students.

There are a lot of nice suburban areas right around Newark (the Oranges, Elizabeth, Passaic, etc.) But I'm not sure where most of the D-students live, if that's what you're asking.

Yeah I'm just from California and the only time I have ever been to NJ is during my interview. I have no idea where a good and safe place would be to live. Thanks for you help!

Good places to live: Belleville, Bloomfield, Nutley, Karney, Harrison, North Arlington, Lydhurst, Clifton, Montclair, South Orange (NOT East!), West Orange. All these towns have affordable housing..

If you really have the desire to live in Newark there is the Society Hill apartments across the street from the school and the Ironbound section of newark is an okay place to live.

I used to live up in Jersey...now I still have tons of family up there, so for the last few months I've been trying to get the scoop from everyone about the areas that we need to be looking into. All of the ones that DMD Hopeful mentioned, I've heard good things about. Union is also considered a pretty decent area, but it also depends on where you are within Union. As soon as I find out some more specifics about it, I'll let you guys know. Some other good areas that are pretty close are Melburn and Westfield, but those are both a little pricier. Someone also mentioned Elizabeth...I don't personally reccomend that area...it can be pretty shady out there.

I don't want to sound redundant, but is anyone still confused over what to do about the instate tuition/financial aid situation? Here is where I'm confused: I'm not gonna be able to provide proof of residency until I actually move up there, which will be over the summer. So, I won't officially know that I'm paying in-state tuition (hopefully 🙄 )until they confirm that I've provided valid proof of NJ residency, right? But I need to go ahead and fill out my FAFSA really soon, so that I know ahead of time, how much loan money I am getting. But I won't actually know if I'm paying 21K or 38K, until June or so. So how are they going to figure out how much loan money I need? I feel like this isn't as complicated as I'm making it. Is anyone else confused about the same thing, or is there anyone who can clear this up for me? Thanks! 🙂

Ironbound in Newark...The name scares me! :scared:

lol.. No reason to be scared. Ironbound is actually a nice place.. Lots of good spanish/brazilian/Portuguese restaurants there.

Irene....
I haven't gotten to the FAFSA yet but I have been thinking the same thing... if in fact I DO GO TO NJ(which right now I have my deposit there) I won't be a NJ resident until summer. So, I am not sure. Do you know what the school's deadline for financial aid is? I am still so engrossed in the application process that I haven't even started thinking about the financial aid (that I will definitely need) Do you know anymore information on that? As far as I know UMDNJ is good about residency.. as long as you are in a month before school starts.. you are usually good.. at least this is what I heard. Any info would be greatly appreciated (about financial aid)
let's keep each other updated 👍

For those that got interviews with UMDNJ after the Dec. 1 date, how long it take to hear about your acceptance. I guess I am panicing because this school is my top choice, and btw I just interviewed last Fri. the 21st and I must say I enjoyed it.

Thankyou for any input.

Yes, Union is also a nice place to live. I agree about Elizabeth, though some parts are suburban. I think Milburn and Westfield might be strethching it a little.. as they are further away than the others mentioned. Nice areas though.

I will definetly keep you posted. I'm thinking I'm gonna start filling out financial aid stuff in a week or so, so I'll probably call up to the financial office at UMDNJ and see if I can figure out what they want us to do about the residency thing. I just want to make sure I end up with enough loan money to live off of! So as soon as I find out what the deal is, I'll be sure to let you know. Good luck on getting through the rest of this application cycle. Which other school are you waiting to hear from? Either way, keep you head up...you're definetly going to dental school! 👍

Have the same concern here, so would you let us know? thanks!

Just thought I'd bump this, as I want to start on my FAFSA, so...

bumpity-bump-bump! 🙂

I just called Kathy Wood, and she said that we should file the FAFSAs now using our current state of residence, and then change the residency after we become NJ residents (say in July). All i'm hoping is that I can indeed get residency, becuase I"m making my budget based on $20.5k tuition...

bump-bump-bump...
Working on my FAFSA!
Looking at www.apartments.com and some other places for some living areas... It is looking like UMDNJ for me as of right now.

Housing????????????

Anyone find housing yet for UMDNJ?

I don't even know where to begin to look for housing. I live in NY. Please help!!!! Anyone from Gateway winter 2005 whats up!

Hi Fellow Classmates...
I spoke with Dr. Tofsky the other day about housing.. She said that Hoboken is really nice..(don't know if I spelt that right) it's a nice "youngtown" but it's also on the pricey side. She also suggested.. Kearny...and Bloomfield. I am going to check out an apartment in North Brunswick.. in two weeks.. it's about a 20-25 min drive from campus.. but it sounds great. I've been looking at real estate ads online.. and have been checking off-campus housing network website.. and Rutger's off campus housing page.
Keep me posted everyone
Chris

Bumpity Bump Bump... fellow classmates.. how are you doing? Heard anything regarding Financial Aid/ Housing etc?
Just a big hello to all.

For those of you planing on getting a NJ driver's lisence, when are your planning to take the road test? My summer's looking kinda busy, all of a sudden... and a friend of mine who is a d-1 there said that it's not so easy to pass - she was an experienced driver and still failed the first time, yikes.

Oh no.. you really have to re-take a road test to switch your license? Do you need to switch your license to get residency? I am heading into NJ right now to look for apartments.. I got a few leads off of the Rutgers Off Campus Housing Page.. and also rent.com.
Ok... well keep me posted.. will be seeing you all soon at UMDNJ

Hey Dr. Bear, i happened to notice your post about you looking at an apartment in North Brunswick. North Brunswick is south of the main campus at Rutgers, and it is definitely not 25 minutes away (esp with traffic). I'm sure most New Jerseyans would agree that if you were goin to dental school in Newark, that a commute from NB would really suck. If I were you, especially if you're from out of town, dont waste your time. As mentioned above, Kearny, Bloomfield, Newark, Clifton, Jersey City, Hoboken, Elizabeth, or anything really in the 201 or some 908 and some 973 area codes would be perfect. Just trying to help.

Hey you guys! 🙂

I'm feeling like its sort of getting to be crunch-time...three months and counting til I move up there! As the weeks pass, I'm getting more and more excited, and also more and more nervous! I'm just wondering where everyone else is in this whole process....

-Has anybody recieved any info about their tentative financial aid package, or when we're supposed to receive that?

-Have you guys all sent in the roommate/housing form....and does anybody know when we're supposed to get the compiled list of all our classmates and their contact info? (I would love to find a roomie! 😛 )

-Also, to get in-state tuition, I know we need to provide a lease, driver's license, and car registration as proof....does anyone know how far in advance before classes start, does all that stuff need to be taken care of?

If you can, let me know what you're up to, and/or any info you might have! Thanks, and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in August! 😀

Haha....well....looks like I better learn to parallel park sometime soon! 😱

Hey There.
I heard from someone that you do not have to re-take your drivers test... that's what I was told from someone who moved there ... and I did get an apt in Plainfield, NJ it's 18 miles from campus and such a GREAT DEAL. I couldn't pass itup... keep in touch everyone.. will be seeing you soon.

Hello Ariel, and welcome to SDN.
Wow, you already secured an apartment? and in Clifton? Isn't that pretty far from the school? I live in Bergen county, but I'll be getting an apartment closer than the 40 min. drive it would take to drive from home. I graduated from Rutgers too, but several years ago. Be sure to milk this summer for all it's worth before we enter 4 years D-school. Leaving for Japan this week for my summer vacation. Keep in touch!

hey,
no clifton is actually about 8 or 10 miles from the school, but that means about 20/25 minutes with traffic (if you avoid the pkwy). it is in passaic county which is south of bergen county. but i was lucky that my sis was already there.
have fun in japan!

I'll be living with my sister in Clifton, too! Maybe I'll see you there, arifoo.

Anyways, I'm freaking a bit because I'm trying to get all the paperwork ready and I HAVE NO TIME - argh!! Serves me right for doing everything so last minute, I suppose. And, I'll be out of the country for a month this summer, and will be returning right before orientation, fun fun.

Dr. Bear - if they waive the road test, does that mean you get a license quickly? And do they waive it for everyone? The website only said "maybe"... I'm praying.

Also, is anyone here not planning to get their health insurance? I'm on my parents' Oxford plan, and I was hoping to keep that instead of laying out another ~$2k.

I'm also coming to NJDS but i live in NY now. How do I obtain a NJ Voter Registration Card? and how long does it take for me to get it? I need it for
in-state tuition.

I need one as well... Go to New Jersey Division of Election and see what it says. Personally, I just downloaded the .pdf and am planning to mail it in as soon as my head stops spinning 🙂. Or, you could just pick up a form at the DMV when you go to change your license...

Do you have to have a NJ license first to be able to get a NJ Voter registration Card?

Not as far as I could see from the form - they ask you for your license # OR the last 4 digits of your social. As far as I know, the only proof they require on the voter reg. card is your signature that all of the above (including address ) is correct to the best of your knowledge, so it should be pretty easy to do once you know where you'll be living.

Anyone else bothered by the disclaimer on the residency form that "Residence established solely for the purpose of attending UMDNJ does not constitute domicile for tuition purposes"?

I'm feeling both terribly excited and rather trepidatious...

just out of curiousity...do you guys know how long it takes to get from penn station to the campus?...do a lot of people commute that way from hoboken?

its about 10 minutes

is there a shuttle? or do you take public transit? or is that a 10 min walk..

There is a shuttle that comes like every 15-20 minutes but it gets filled really quickly, you dont always get on it. Its about a 10 minute drive.

Hey Tzips,
I'm staying on my parents' health insurance plan as well...I'm pretty sure I can stay on it until I'm 24, as long as I'm a full time student. As far as I know, its not a problem to waive the health insurance through umdnj...you basically just submit an online form before a given date (sometime in August), and that way you don't have to shell out the extra $2K.

Hi fellow classmates... I will be living about 20 mins from campus as well...been there a few times..and it's not too bad even with traffic. I went to change over my license the other day.. but now I have to go get a physical because I also have a CDL license that they have to transfer over.. so have to get to the Dr. to have him sign it and then BACK TO NJ to hand it in... Got my financial aid approval in the mail.. but still unsure about how it all works.. anyone else feel excited but yet a little nervous?

Hey Chris!

Did they give you any trouble about transfering your license (ie, did you have to take a road test, written test, etc.?) I'm going to the DMV as soon as my transcript (proof of address) comes.
