UMDNJ Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so I called the office today, and they said that ONLY nj residents pay the in-state tuition, any non nj residents pay out of state tuition

so i am sure this more accurate than what some people were saying earlier that all students pay in state tuition

good luck to all

Hmmm, I was under the impression that once you live in jersey for a year, or have a years lease/change your drivers license over to NJ's you were granted in state tuition-23,00 a year....damn that was the great appeal. Stratford should not be too expensive to live in since its a suburb (im comparing to bigger cities) and a condo is quiet doable. Perhaps farookiano you should ask if the OOS tuition applies if you change to a NJ resident by getting a one year lease. And good luck to all of you, I hope to be doing this next year, but just wanted to share some info since I've looked at the school. Best wishes.😳

I've heard the opposite a lot on here. I'm wondering if it's one of those things that they're not supposed to announce but actually does work that way.

i am sorry i should have mentioned that
you guys are right

after the first year, you pay in state tuition
but the lady told me that out of states residents pay out of state tuition first year, and pay in state tuition for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th yr only if they become nj residents which requires living in the state for 12 months

i hope she is wrong, but it doesnt make sense to charge oos residents same tuition, the first yr at least

i dont know
maybe medical students currently in umdnj can answer our question

uh oh...i was afraid of this. i did hear a rumor that the policies might change regarding giving OOS first years, IS tuition if they move to nj, get a lease, drivers license, etc. it looks like this may now be the case. btw, who did you talk to? Paula?

i am not sure of her name
she sounded young though

wait, im confused now, so what do we pay if we are oos students

i believe, it's just what they told you. as an OOS student you pay OOS tuition the first year and then, if you establish nj residency during that year, you pay IS tuition the following years. right? 😕

ya thats what she said
i think this is correct

i called the school today, and i found out that they recieved over 500 accomas applications just last wednesday, and they are falling behind

so it will take longer to look at them😱

w/e
its just a matter of time

someone else told me u can pay IS tuition for the full 4 years.

i heard it from someone from the umdnj class of 2011. he's oos and i saw his msg via sdn.

ah..i see. the rumor I heard was that they are changing this policy beginning with the c/o 2012. someone please correct me if i'm mistaken.

For the question regarding what specialty you're interested in, did you just list a couple/few? For some reason that question makes me nervous like my response will get me rejected. I am most interested in OB/GYN and Emergency Medicine so that's what I put. I'm really open though to almost any specialty. Were you just honest and listed your top choices?

hey EEL08! I would just be honest. I don't think any school expects you to know exactly what type of dr. you want to be as a pre-med. In fact, it is my understanding that they encourage you to keep your mind open as you go through the med school process. I just listed a couple areas that interest me (mainly the ones I have experience in) and told them I was not totally sold on what type of dr. I wanted to be at my interview. Nobody batted an eyelash. Although, I did say that I was more interested in providing continuous care. I'd like to see my patients more than once 😀. :luck::luck:!!

i pretty much listed what i think i might be interested in. i also noted that i'm open to almost anything.

Of those of you who have been accepted or are current UMDNJSOM students, does the admissions office always/only call if you have been accepted?.....vice versa do they only mail you if you've been rejected or wait listed? I'm getting nervous post interview and they told us we would hear this week or next. Thanks for the input

im waiting too...its good to know someone else didnt get a call yesterday...i was so nervous. i hope they didnt call because its so close to Thanksgiving. good luck hildebjl!
I interviewed 11/1 when did you interview?

i interviewed on 11/9...im thinking that they said that the admin committee was going to meet last week and that i would hear from them this week. Apparently i was a little nervous on interview day because i keep forgetting when they actually said i would hear from them... Did you hear anything yet??...and good luck to you as well:luck:

Hey hildebj, I interviewed 11/9 as well. They said they would call or let us know the week of Thanksgiving. I'm still waiting. Have any others heard back? Good luck to everyone. I am so anxious!!

maybe there is still hope. When i interviewed they said they would send out letters..probably wouldn't know anything until after Thanksgiving (thats what Lora said)...Good luck. This is soo agonizing!

I got a call this afternoon (11/26) and the lady was like "i'm calling to schedule an interview, are you free tomorrow morning?" I was like ?!?!?!?!?!?! I was so happy. I'm getting ready to go tomorrow morning. Hopefully it won't take too long for them to get back to me. Did you guys waiting for the Thanksgiving call get them yet? I hope I can get a response from them soon after the interview. I'm gonna be so anxious until then! Oh well, wish me luck tomorrow!

PleaseAcceptMe7- what were your stats and EC's. and how long did you have to wait for the interview? and are you OOS?

i got waitlisted 🙁 i thought i did great on the interview...

How long after being complete did you guys receive interview invites. My husband and I are complete as of last week and I will actually be quite surprised if my husband does not receive an interview.

It took them about a month to contact me. They took longer than most of the other schools I interviewed at.

Anytime! 😉 I hope your husband gets an interview/acceptance!!!:luck:

I hope so too. He was pretty surprised when he got a call from them because it's such a great school.

oh, they called him?! that's a great sign!! sounds like they really want him. I'm sure it's all a matter of time then!! 👍

Yeah we actually originally applied back in August when we first sent our AACOMAS. We weren't sure of our chances though so we hadn't submitted the secondary. A little less than two weeks ago my husband got a call encouraging him to submit the secondary and that his app was on the director's desk and they're really interested in him and don't want his app to fall through the cracks. They also told him they're about to start really recruiting more minorities (underrepresented) soon. I know I barely have a chance but we both went ahead and overnighted our secondaries last week. It would be awesome if he had the chance to interview at such a great, highly respected school. I can always reapply next year if it comes down to it.

That sounds very encouraging! It would be so great if you both were accepted! I'll keep my fingers crossed!!! :luck::luck:

Thanks! By the way, congrats on your interviews and acceptances! 😀

Thanks! 😳 I'm excited to get started. I'm having the hardest time choosing between UMDNJ and TCOM. They are both such great schools. I've never lived in TX, and am unsure if I'd fit in being a northern and all.

Where are you from? I think it would be kind of strange to move to that part of the country. I'm originally from IL so it was even interesting adjusting to living here. We didn't apply to TCOM because we were ready to leave the state but I'm sure that you will be happy whatever school you choose. I'm sure it is a tough choice though.

I'm currently in NYC, lived in northern california for a couple years, and grew up in western NY. What part of TX are you in? I swing pretty far to the left, which makes me leary of a very red state. Though, I'm sure I'm totally stereotyping. I'll most likely end up at UMDNJ. 👍

I had a friend from IL ask me if everyone here is like President Bush. Trust me there are plenty of people who lean the same way you do. I can't imagine living in NYC. It intimidates me. 😛 I actually live in DFW. It sounds like NJ might be a great fit for you then. The strange thing would not be getting to pump my own gas.

You would be fine in Texas, they are mostly very nice down there. I've interviewed at both UMDNJ and TCOM, both are exceptional institutions... although I am a little more impressed with TCOM. The other negative about UMDNJ is that it is in the northeast and near Philadelphia. It is a crazy, fast paced lifestyle out there which is not my cup of tea even though I have family in Connecticut and attended University of Connecticut as an undergraduate. I dont know if I want to raise my family there for 4 years either. Finally, TCOM is cheaper as well in terms of tuition and living expenses. It also should be noted that winters at UMDNJ could be nasty whereas TCOM is not nearly as bad!

I forgot about that! You're right, that will be an adjustment. Do I have to tip them? 😕

According to a some New Jerseyans (?) on another site only visitors try to tip the person that pumps your gas. I'm not sure if they can accept tips or not.

The problem is when we do have bad weather down here the Texans don't know what to do with themselves so it ends up being a lot more dangerous on the roads. 😱

Thanks for the input Patriots! Sadly, it will be harder for me to get residency as I am not married to someone who can work fulltime to qualify for instate tuition. I could, however, buy property and I think that would suffice after 12 months? But lord knows, I don't have enough money to buy a house. I don't think south jersey is that expensive to live. Also, living in nyc...anything has got to be slower!!! 😉 As someone who's interested in IM/GP and clinical research, TCOM has a really rad PCP research fellowship which is soooo up my alley. I think it's what's making my decision difficult. Though, I'm sure if I look hard enough I can find something comparable at UMDNJ? Plus, everyone was so nice at both schools! I think I have more research to do. 😎

 my mother recently moved to south carolina from new york and she's said the same thing. A little bad weather and everything shuts down. she's all ready to go out and everything is closed. 😀 😱

Hey, first of all I had my UMDNJ interview this morning. I think it went well, except that my interviewer asked me what I would do if I did not get into medical school, then gave me advice about going into a Master's program if I did not get in. The pessimist inside of me is telling me that he's hinting I won't get in. However, he did say a couple times I am a strong candidate. The interview was not as laid back as my WVSOM interview, but I think it went well. The interviewer seemed intimidating at first, but after a couple minutes I was very comfortable with it. They said I should have my acceptance/rejection around the 20th of December 🙁 That's a long time. I really hope I get in; this is my #1 choice for a med school.

Also, I told him I applied to NJMS, and then panicked in my head 'cause I don't want them to think I'm using UMDNJ SOM as a safety for NJMS. I told him later I prefer UMDNJ SOM as my #1 choice, which is the God-honest truth. I definitely prefer SOM over NJMS. I hope I didn't hurt myself by telling him I applied to NJMS though.

PleaseAcceptMe7- what were your stats and EC's. and how long did you have to wait for the interview? and are you OOS?

- I'm from The College of New Jersey
- I'm a New Jersey resident
- I'm male, 21 yrs
- I'm a double major in Biology/Psychology
- I have a 3.39 Science GPA
- I have a 3.39 overall GPA
- 7PS, 13VR, 10BS MCAT
- Shadowed two DOs, one is the OMM instructor at UMDNJ SOM, the other is a cardiologist and graduate of UMDNJ SOM
- Attended UMDNJ SOM Mini-medical school

As you can see, I'm pretty hardcore about UMDNJ SOM, so if I don't get in, I'm gonna be really really really sad 🙁

Oh, and all my secondaries, letters of rec. etc were finished around the beginning of November, and they contacted me about today's interview... yesterday, haha. So it took about 2 weeks for them to get back to me about an interview.

This is gonna be the longest month of my life...

I had trouble finding this out on the website, but does anyone know if during your 3rd and 4th years at UMDNJ-SOM you can do your rotations at hospitals other than those in southern Jersey, near the school? Thanks.

Honestly, you cant go wrong either way! Compared to NYC everywhere is cheaper and slower so I guess you will be fine at UMDNJ if your managing in New York. Oh, by the way, there is time to still get married and pick up the in-state at TCOM. Probably not worth it though since UMDNJ sounds like they give all those OOS who establish NJ residency in-state after the first year!

You're stats seem great for UMDNJ, although the GPA is somewhat lower then the mean. However, the ins and outs of how to apply to a master's program by your interviewer does not arouse a great deal of confidence for an acceptance! Good luck!

you can do the North Jersey track which places you at Christ Hospital for your 3rd and 4th year if you want. You still have some rotations you need to come down to the South Jersey campus for though. During your 4th year you will have elective time that you can go anywhere for (I rotated at UMDNJ-NJMS, Temple, and Thomas Jefferson).

To those of you that have heard back from UMDNJ-SOM...waitlist or acceptance...how did they notify you? Phone call? Email? Letter?

How long did it take for them to answer you after the adcom meeting?

Thanks!
