I was just wondering which school would be better to go to if cost is not an issue (I know this is a very subjective question). Clinically, which school is stronger? Also, do you have to fight for chairs in both schools?

I think NYU is better in terms of location. Both are similar for clinical experience, but I think NYU has a slight edge over UMDNJ. Did you hear back from any of them yet?

You should ask about residency rate and which residencies students typically get into. Last year at UMDNJ, 4 people got into oral surgery out a class of like 110. The year before that 6 kids got into oral surgery. Both 4 and 6 people getting into oral surgery is pretty much unheard of, according to the Dean of Admissions there. You should look into that kind of stuff for NYU. I think it's a toss up clinically between them 2.

It's not a toss-up. UMDNJ gets more patients per student.

From what I saw in the interviews, UMDNJ seems stronger clinically.

Yeah, I have interviews at UMDNJ and NYU coming up in a couple weeks.

People have said that NYU doesn't have enough "chairs."

Thanks for all the input. When I get into dental school, I just would really like to graduate on time - that is why I'm asking about availability of "chairs"

Note that UMNDJ is combining with Rutgers which will strongly build their research.

UMDNJ. NYU's class size is too large to feel like you're getting enough attention or be able to get to know everyone in your class well enough to make lifelong friendships with everyone in your class. At NYU, you're going to run into more students who were reapplicants or only chose NYU as a last resort than at UMDNJ. This matters, at least to me, because I want a student body majority that is made up of inquisitive students. NYU probably has more research opportunities funded by NIDCR than UMDNJ. Although you can find research opportunities at any traditional dental school (this excludes nontraditional schools like Midwestern).
You can measure which one is better clinically by comparing their number of hours needed and their number of each procedure needed to graduate at each school. The more, the better.

I'm in the same situation, as I was accepted to both schools.

I think UMDNJ is a much better school than NYU because of small class size (90) and faculty to student ratio. They don't have to compete for clinic chairs. Besides the professors are super caring and nice. The only problem is location-- it sucks. Besides, the facilities are pretty comparable. UMDNJ is much cheaper than NYU.

On the other hand, NYU is freaking expensive because of living costs in New York city. The vice dean sucks and the class size is 360. They have very few clinical requirements like 3 crowns while UMDNJ requires 21-25. Other clinic reqs are also very minimal at NYU, which means you won't learn a hell lot in NYU. But at UMDNJ you will learn a lot.

Speciality rate for UMDNJ is around 23% which is comparable with NYU. But NYU emphasize heavily on research, which UMDNJ does not. So, if you like to do research, which many dental students would not opt for, go for NYU. otherwise, UMDNJ.

Finally, I think UMDNJ is a much nicer school in terms of creating a community with your classmate. They share notes of facebook and people are really nice. But from NYU, I saw a different vibe.

Where are you getting your numbers for clinical requirements i.e. 3 crowns?
