I am going to be a visiting student at UMDNJ soon and was wondering if anyone had any tips on who to meet while I am there and who best to spend time with. I am considering it high on my list for places I would like to do my residency at. Also, how is the medical student rotation set up? Is it a "follow me around" sort of thing or is it "here, take a look at this patient, write on the chart, and i'll come see how you did later" sort of thing?

Thanks in advance for the info!

the elective is coordinated by Dr Guo: gen & peds. u will spend time in diff fields changing each wk. depending on how comfortable u r u can see pts on ur own & then present to a resident/attg. if not comfortable, i still think u can see pts on ur own & get a strong Hx & a cursory exam & then present, this will show eagerness & will impress. Just be curious, eager to learn, & take a call or 2 inhouse w/ the residents to get a feel for that. The people to meet if possible r langer (prog director), zarbin (chair), & any other full-time faculty: neuro (frohman, turbin), glaucoma (fechtner), cornea/uveitis (chu), retina (zarbin, bhagat, roy), plastics (langer, turbin). Dont forget the residents who can put in a good word if we feel u r strong & mesh well.

Thanks for the response nyeyes. Seems like a lot of people to meet and impress in a very short period of time. I guess I can try and spend some time with the major guys and the residents, though. How often do the residents take call? Is it the same for students? Also, do you get any OR time as a student or is it mostly clinic?
