Pros:

  • 4 year dual degree program
  • Really liked the school/faculty when I visited
  • Massive in house hospital center. Was really impressed with the amount of institutions in the hospital district
  • Preclinical + clerkships done in 2.5 years, m leaving 1.5 years to finish capstone projects and possibly do specialized rotations (maybe even some back in NY)
  • Weather (big plus, the sun is good for me)
  • Emphasis on tropical disease (I have interests in the developing world)
  • Global Health is big here

Cons:

  • So far from my friends and family. I have a community in NY and while initially I didn’t feel like this would be an issue, as I get closer to the CTE deadline this is starting to weigh on me
  • Internal rank (P/F)

NYMC:

Pros:

  • Close to home (but this is important), have friends and community here
  • Could do all of my rotations in NY based hospitals

Cons:

  • No directly attached hospital system
  • There is dual degree options at NYMC but not as robust as Miami
  • Weather
  • Not sure about the merger with Touro and how that affects research opportunities. Generally less research though since I would imagine Miami has more funding and vastly more resources
  • Internal rank (P/F)

Overall I feel I would be academically more satisfied at Miami. Having said that, NYMC I would feel personally more satisfied. My question is the difference in quality between Miami and NYMC enough for me to say one is an obvious pick over another? What are your thoughts?

I think you should go to Miami here, it's tough to leave support systems (from personal experience) but I think your Pro/Con list speaks for itself when it comes to why Miami is a better program for you.

Thank you for your response! i do agree its a better program for me. But is the difference enough that my career outcomes/matching would be much different?

I’m choosing UMiami over NYMC as a Westchester native who reallyyyy wanted to be in NY for school.

UMiami is just in another tier when it comes to resources. By the looks of it, it’s only getting better funding and more recognition as the years go on. Miami got about $175M in funding (before NIH cuts) and NYMC got around $7M; that’s a steeeeep difference. T40 vs T100 is a big difference too and their match lists reflect that overall. Granted, I want to go into plastics. I think if I knew I was 100% going into peds or family med, I might go NYMC instead since matching is less of a concern.

I plan on doing as many away rotations as possible in NYC when the time comes! Miami is a well connected city with plenty of direct flights to Newark and JFK so I don’t anticipate feeling stranded in Florida.

Hey thanks for the response! Do you know how many away rotations we are allowed?

I think yes your career outcomes would be different. Miami is a stronger name. Check out the match lists for your desired specialties.
