Hey,

Did anyone else get an interview from Umich last week? What was their interview selection criteria? Thanks.

btw, I'm NOT in-state.

I was offered an interview last week. I have no idea what the selection criteria were, but I am instate, and a umich undergrad with a 3.7/33.

I'm pretty sure it's MCAT and GPA. My boyfriend just got one and we both think it's too early for them to have actually looked at Personal Statement/EC's/etc.

Hi. I just wanted to congratulate those who are getting interviews to UMich. The percentage of people who interview in the first few months of the season and are eventually accepted is above 75%. So it's a really big deal that you get to go so early.

On another note, last year when I interviewed I thought UMich didn't do much to hook me up with a med student to spend the night with, etc. If anybody out there needs a place to stay the night before they interview, feel free to PM me ahead of time and we'll see if we can work something out. Congrats again.

UMich does give automatic interviews, it's not a fluke. It's also almost exclusively numbers based. I believe last year the numbers hovered around 3.85+, 35+ for an automatic interview. Of course, there's a bit of flexibility to the floor for these numbers too (i.e. in-state status, URM), but that's pretty much the rough cutoff from last year. Ditto for Pitt Med.

Congrats all. 🙂

Over 75%??! Where did you get this stat? Thanks for providing it.

At my interview last year, one of the students on the admissions committee mentioned it. So, assuming the student wasn't lying (the things Dr. Remick said to us as a whole during his presentation would suggest that he wasn't), that's the way it is. The key word is, of course, eventually. I'm sure that plenty get waitlisted at first.

75%??????!!!!!! SWEET. But...

Is it a good idea to go on the VERY FIRST interview day (I think it's 9/10/04)? I'm worried that it the admissions people might have unrealistic standards at that time. Besides, that day would probably be jam packed with obessive overachievers, making it quite difficult to stand out..........

I'm also wondering about this too. I have half a mind to go the first day just to meet some of you SDNers for the first time. But really, might it be disadvantageous to go really early? Or later in October, for that matter? I just keep thinking of figure skating, and how they don't give out the 6.0's to the first people. On the other hand, this is a totally different kind of situation.

Having talked to admissions they said that if you are instate you must have atleast a 33 MCAT (Avg of 11, subscores don't matter) and a 3.6 GPA (cummulative). It was inferred that they do not give auto interviews for outofstate.... but not sure.

nope, 33, 3.6 for non-URMs. They had these cutoffs for last 3 years

I went in late October and they still considered us to be in their "top" bracket.

Possibly for in-staters, yeah. Your comment about out-of-state applicants not getting automatic interviews is wrong. I know a ton of out-of-state applicants who got auto interviews with big numbers and subsequently accepted on Oct. 15th. The numbers bar for in-staters is understandably lower, since it's a state school.

Makes sense... they were hesitant to talk about auto interviews for out of state. When asked, she changed the subject. Very strange.

fridays starting some times in sept....

yea, every friday starting sept 10th

So, is it a one-day interview?

So if we didn't get an interview are our chances basically shot? Because that really sucks. Damn GPA ruining my life ... <<grumble, grumble>>

You'll get an interview, but the GPA probably kept you from getting an "auto-interview".

yes, 7-3:30 i believe.
most interviews are 1 day, right?
Thanks for the info. I hope they are all one day, for some reason, I had it in my head that some are split up. (UTH is a one day thing, for what that's worth.)

Not in the slightest. The take-home message is that the advantage of interviewing early is more pronounced at Michigan than at a lot of other schools, but it's not like they waitlist everybody who interviews after October. You're not done because you didn't get an "automatic" interview. Don't sweat it.

Congrats to those who got automatic interviews! 🙂 Things look good for you. I got one last year, interviewed September 12, and got in October 15. Try not to stress too much - this was one of the most relaxed interview days I had. Good luck everyone!

I have heard that MD/PhD interviews are weekend events. I also heard that schools will pay to have you fly in and interview.

Hey all...

Does anybody know what the requirements for an auto interview are if you are not a MI resident? I have a 34/4.0 and haven't been asked, i guess im assuming that my MCAT is too low.

Just curious

Did you check your status page on their web site? They didn't send me an email or anything, but my auto interview is indicated online.

Yeah. I started checking the status page after I heard that people were getting interviews. Still no love.

Some people have said they waited up to 48 hours after secondary invite for their interview invite. Hang in there.

I'm just reading this thread and feeling retroactively screwed. I'm a Michigan resident, with a 32/3.65, and I didn't even get an interview last year.

I'm not complaining, because I'm super happy to be at MCW (starting in two weeks), but I'm wondering how an in-state 33/3.6 gets an automatic early interview and I didn't get any!

Strange.

I am a 33/3.96 without an auto interview....it's allright...

Yeah, the auto-interview thing was a bit mysterious. Last year, I was invited to send LORs, and then I got an interview invite shortly after I submitted my secondary. Out of state, non-URM, with numbers above their so-called cutoffs. I interviewed in January, there were very few spots left at that point. I was waitlisted and got in in May.

UMich was by far my favorite interview day. It was a total blast. My interviewers were so nice.

Have fun folks. Go early for an interview if you have the chance.

I just got an auto interview, but i'm an MD/PhD applicant, so I still need to get the MD/PhD interview 🙁 . My stats are pretty good 36O/4.0 and in-state.

Oh, I'm also a umich undergrad, so that might help.

do you think they looked at the personal statementl before they decided on inviting early interviews?

I would doubt it. Given the number of applicants and the fast turnaround time, I would guess that they looked mainly at MCAT, GPA, residency, URM status (though I could be wrong).

I got the interview invite a couple of weeks ago as an out-of-stater with a 37/3.7. I ended up picking the first day (Sept. 10) because it worked out with my work schedule but I think that I would've picked it anyway. Why not get in as early as possible? Anyone else going to be there that Friday?

I'm planning to go on Sept. 17. The non-stop flight is cheaper for me. Anybody going on that date? Isn't anybody a little concerned how early the interview is? It starts at 7 am! That's 5 am pacific time.

outta state, 37, 3.77, auto

I got the thing in the mail today, and I'm calling tomorrow to try to interview on 9/17.

OOS, 38, 3.92, auto

I am not applying until next year, but I just wanted to congratulate all of you on your U of M interviews! I know a kid here who got an automatic interview. He is out-of-state with a 37, 3.9. I hope to be in the position all of you are in next year. I am a Michigan resident, and Ann Arbor is amazing!!! Good luck to all of you with the application cycle. Go Blue🙂

i called yesterday and the first three dates are already filled...i'm going on oct. 1st 👍

I'm pretty sure that's actually 4 am pacific time. Michigan is in the Eastern time zone (weird, I know, but it is).

Well, I didn't receive an automatic interview, but I just received an interview offer after I submitted my secondary application. Out-of-state, 34Q/3.96.

Were your letters already in?
Or was it just after you submitted the secondary by itself..

I only ask because your 34Q/3.96 is dangerously close to my 33Q/3.96

DrThom,

Approximately a week after my application was complete (secondary app, letters, photo, and app fee), I checked my status page, and it mentioned that I had been granted an interview and that I would receive a letter in the mail shortly. Good luck buddy.
