Is anyone attending the UMich Visit Day?
I received my invitation through email from the epi department, so I'm not sure if the visit days for all departments are on the same day or not. Actually, I'm not sure if I'm even going to go...$18k per semester is so much more than $12600 per semester (Emory)!

True, but then in the second year you could qualify for in-state tuition which is a little less than $11,000 so your 2 year total would be $29k versus Emory's $25.2k. And when you factor in living costs, opportunities for paid research ect., it might be an even smaller difference.

Michigan doesn't allow you to apply for in-state residency after the first year. I already asked an admissions person, bursar's, and financial aid about it.

The visiting day was really casual and the faculties/students/alum are all very friendly. I applied to number of schools and most of them don't have a interview. Thus I felt michigan took that extra step in their selection processes to ensure they have the top applicants and it made me felt special in a way. I rather go to a school that respects me and gives me feeling of "you are one of us" rather than a school that think too high of itself. (cough cough Yale).

Also you have to consider the name and network of a school. Even through the cost of michigan might be little bit higher then other schools, but later on you will be rewarded with tons of opportunities. I assure you that the name will stand out like no other when you are trying to find a job the in the future. Vouch on that.

But again im a u of m alum and that it;s your decision. Go blue

hey Music, when did UMich receive your app and when did you hear from them? Thanks!

I'm getting worried. They got my app in mid Dec, it's already been two months.....

MPH in Epi

Oh really?! That is a huge bummer. So I guess it only helps PhD students then?

Thanks for the info, nbku8tf.
But aren't UMich and Emory at the same level of prestige?

dhycortex, UMich received my application mid-November and I heard from them mid-January. You can always call the epi department and ask when they're sending out the next round of decisions--they're all very friendly! Good luck!

Hi music.

You are right on the fact (fact only) that Emory is at same level as Michigan or even higher depending on which ranking you are looking at, but in this perceived world ppl would think Michigan is better. Especially on an international stage, Michigan has a good if not great reputation. People from India, China, Korea, Euro and South America knows Michigan whenever I mention I graduated from there. They all have high praise of Michigan.

On the other hand, schools like Emory might not have that great of international reputation. Just to give you an example, two of my friend one went to Cal Tech and the other went to Mit. They both are excellent school, but whenever I mention them to people in China or Korea or any international setting they instantaneously know Mit, but not so much for Cal tech. Even my grandma knows Mit. haha.

On top of that, Michigan one of the biggest alum networks in the nation. (The quality of the network might not be as good as Harvard or Yale. but the quantity makes up for the quality). Everywhere I go there is someone wearing Michigan shirt. (Hong Kong, China, Japan, deep south, northeast, Cali, DC, TX list goes on and on).

I do give that Emory has better weather then Michigan. J

I know I sound bias, but this is my first hand experience. Again your choice.

Yes, it is true that Michigan is much more well-known than Emory. When people (as in college-aged US students) asked where I applied and I said Emory, they had never heard of it before! But I'm 99.9% sure I'm going to work in the US and as much as I would love to attend Michigan, I just can't justify paying an extra $20k to get the same level of education that I could receive at Emory.

Does anyone know what the typical agenda is for the visit day for Epi students? It doesn't look like they have posted an agenda yet on their website.

I don't think I am going to be able to make it because I am going to be visiting another school that week. I have a friend in the MHA program who could show me around etc and introduce me to students on a different day- but I wasn't sure how much I would be missing by not attending the official day.

Does anyone know if they offer alternative visit days (like UW)?🙄

Dear music,

I hope I'm not one of those 20 years old undergraduate ignorant college kid that you pointed out. 🙂

If you read my post closely, i pointed that Emory is an excellent school with excellent faculty body. The researches are excellent. It is close to ALT (of course CDC). All of those are great asset of Emory.

All of the above could be applied to michigan too (of course not the CDC and ATL, but ann arbor is good town and there are numbers of top hospitals within the area).

Also even if you think that you are definitely going to work in the US, it wouldn't heard to have some international exposure.

Just like any other excellent institutions out there. No matter if is Harvard vs. Princeton, or MIT vs Cal Tech or whom ever, there is almost a "fit" factor for the potential student. For me Michigan was a good "fit" and maybe Emory is a great "fit" for you. I hope you make your decision not based on preconceived notion and make a clear decision. (maybe a trip to ann arbor would do me the justice and if you go i will make sure you have a wonderful experience 🙂 )

Remember this it is not what do you know, but who do you know.

correction *it wouldn't hurt

I'm curious about the visit day agenda as well. I've been checking the RSVP site everyday, and they don't have it up yet.

That my friend you have to decide for yourself. To be or not to be.

as for the schedule. I interviewed for MHA not epi. the schedule for it was a very causal session where you interview (more like talking with) faculty member, go to lunch, QA session and campus tour. The students and alumni are super nice.

If you decided to go, check out the dominic's. The best sangria you will ever have. Be warned no Ohio State t shirt is allowed on campus.

haha, i think im enticing you to go. you never know i might pay a visit to ATL this coming month.

This is sort of a silly question, but what was the attire for the MHA interview? I wear suits at work every day, but now for some reason I'm wondering if that's appropriate?

I'm just debating whether or not to go to the visit day...I don't want to take a day off work and/or fall in love with a school I can't afford.

From reading this discussion, it doesn't sound as if the difference in cost between Michigan and Emory is that extreme. Loans are for this purpose. When you finish school and are making a good salary, the tuition will be paid back. Remember, this is the education upon which the rest of your career will be launched. I think it's worthwhile to choose the school that will serve you the best in the long run. Even if it's the somewhat more expensive program, it will likely more than pay for itself over the years both financially and in job satisfaction. If it's the less expensive one, that's great. I'm a physician applying for my MPH and am facing similar decisions - I will have to take out loans, and I'm hoping for scholarships. My advice is based on years of practicing intensive care medicine in an academic setting.

Best of luck to you!
