UMICH VS. NYU

I am a FL resident and attend the University of Michigan as an undergraduate.

I recently was accepted to both UMich and NYU, and I need to make a decision in the next few days.

Umich pros: rank, cheaper cost of living, smaller class size, I know the city
Cons: I won't have a change of pace (in life)

NYU pros: chance to live in NYC, new experiences, also good ranking (not as good at Umich)
cons: cost of living, large class size

Does anyone know if the large class size at NYU is bad??! Preferably from a student who has gone there or knows a great deal about the program

Both would be high, since I would be paying OOS tuition for Umich. I am focusing more on the program aspects rather than the financial aspects.

If you have any insight I would appreciate it!!!

michigan is tons better dude...their clinical curriculum is da bomb and so are their basic science courses...i bet the crowd at michigan is better too

michigan also gets little hate from their own students...can't say the same about nyu

what ranking are you talking about? pretty sure dental schools aren't ranked by any credible sources. But anyways, if you already interviewed at both schools and already seem to have all the information, is there really anyone else can tell you that you don't already know?

I'd stay.. with Jim Harbaugh in town, student section will be crazy!! Then again, I went to Umich for undergrad as well; I have my bias. 🙂

I can't say much about NYU, but with a class size as large as 300+, I would assume the faculty:student ratio will be lower. In addition, you won't get a nice living space without spending a fortune in NY.

Just my two cents. If only I had this kind of option, I'd pick Michigan. After all, "Those who stay will be champions" Go BLUE!... haha!

I think NYU receives a lot of negativity. The majority of these complaints are related to costs rather than anything particular about their school. But I think it is a great school and the reason why I applied to NYU was because of the opportunities in research, honors program, location, and notable faculty. The Bluestone Center, run by Dr. Schmidt, attests to NYU's impressive research capacity. If I were in academia, I probably would love the opportunity to work at NYU. However, as a student, I think I would be put at an overall greater disadvantage due to the extraordinary debt from attending NYU.

With that said, I would go to Michigan due to costs and as institutions, NYU and Michigan, are both high-impact research powerhouses. I think Michigan would have an upper-hand in terms of overall education for a dental student. As an anecdote, the school I go to (VCU) is known for being a strong clinical school however we received two Michigan students as transfers and they were impressively competent and were a semester ahead of us (probably because they start school earlier). I don't have any anecdotes comparing VCU with NYU but I think choosing Michigan is a very good choice.

Two UMich transfers? Maybe I just dont know much about it but I thought transferring was very rare and hard to accomplish, let alone two students from the same school. Just curious if you know why they transferred?

And for the record OP, out of 4 acceptances I chose Michigan out of state (still on waitlist at my two state schools) for the many reasons already stated here. Good luck in your decision
