How would you guys compare these two programs (in terms of: academic focus, student life, faculty, etc.)? After some online research, it seems they are both great programs that are relatively similar. Correct me if I'm wrong. Any thoughts from current students would be greatly appreciated. 🙂

I love both schools and both have high academic standards. I don't know any specific details about the two schools but my dad got his masters degree from UM and my older brother is in his M2 year of UW med school and they both have really enjoyed their experiences.

Oh no debate here U of M all the way. but no seriously I would go with mich, because of not only are they a great school but the name is very well known around the world!

and U of Washington isn't?

So I'm a first-year student at UWSOP. If you can give what you think are some pros and cons at each place, I may be able to help you out. You can also PM me with any questions you have.

The pharmacy program is really well known here, and pharmacists in UW have a lot of options, in part because of UWSOP's efforts. I like how the program is set up, for the most part. The first year has been a bit light, although I did 6 years in a grad program before pharm school, so I may be a bit biased. And UWSOP is really interested in changing and improving classes so we get the best education possible.

The one negative I can think of (which may be the case at UM, too) is that we're a little light on business classes, but that may or may not be an issue for you. And I think you can take some business classes as pharmacy electives.

Hope this helps!

U of Mich would be my choice. I have cousins that have gone there and really liked the school.

University of Washington is basically ranked in the top 10 (usually top 5) for basically every health profession program under the sun (including pharmacy). I don't know if you care about the rankings, but there you go. Some people say that rankings are biased toward name recognition and how much professionals associate a school with just healthcare in general. So at the very least you know that U of W has better name recognition than U of M as far as healthcare goes (U of W has #1 top ranked med school according to U.S News and #5 ranked pharmacy school).

U of M, from what I hear, has some pretty impressive research going on, too.

Go check out the UW thread- people made some complaints about their interview experience. I know someone that came from UMich and she loved it.

But I would take the above poster's advice...go to the cheaper one. You're going to get a good education either way. The only reason I would pick UWash would be location, but that's just me 🙂

UWash usually edges out UMich by a few ranks in health-care related fields but UMich is also in the top ten for other programs like law and engineering - something UWash can't boast.

They're both class institutions so going by ranking or name recognition should be trivial. It's like Princeton vs Harvard so it comes down to other factors like academic focus, student life, faculty, questions the OP asked.

Both school have their own flavors but having only visited UMich's general campus and being a neophyte in academia, I can only comment about UMich. UMich is a big ten school so the events and social life is par excellent. There is plenty to do, see, and eat. UMich is also very liberal. For example, Marijuana is decriminalized and an event called the Hash Bash is held annually - I'm going for the first time this year. UMich is also culturally diverse so discovering Arabic, Indian, or Korean food is no problem. Though I hear UWash is a quarter Asian so maybe there is some overlap.

In terms of faculty, I think that's something research professors would know. They should be able to tell you about them - trends, strengths, weaknesses, etc.
