Hey everyone,

I've been fortunate enough to have had an amazing cycle, and am narrowing my choice down to these two schools because I want to stay in state. I also want to note that my financial aid has not come in yet, but I am not expecting to get anything.

Michigan
+T15 school
+My top choice going into the cycle
+incredible hospital system with top tier research output
+Ann Arbor seems like a phenomenal town for both undergraduate and graduate students
+1 year preclinical, true P/F unranked for preclinical year
+match list is amazing
+best interview experience by far. Admissions team was incredibly friendly!
-will be $13,000 more expensive than Wayne per year

Wayne State
+Detroit is a very fun city with lots to do
+I've heard there is an incredible variety of cases in the Detroit hospitals
+extremely diverse patient population
+Henry Ford Health System has home programs in a variety of specialties and I've heard they favor Wayne grads pretty heavily (anecdotal; not sure if this is true)
+$13,000 cheaper than UMich per year
-Not as highly ranked
-Match list is solid, but UMich is simply on a different tier.

This really comes down to whether the extra $13,000 per year in tuition to go to UMich is worth it. I was initially dead set on UMich because it is my dream school, but $52,000 over 4 years is no small amount of money. I will also likely be paying back much more than that when I pay off my loan, so the difference in cost between these two schools will probably be over $100,000 over 4 years. I just wanted to get some input on whether y'all think UMich is worth the extra cost. I'm not sure what specialty I want to go into yet, so I want to keep my options open. Thank you all so much!

I think this is one of the rare scenarios where the money is probably worth it. You seem to genuinely love UMich and I think that the value gained by matriculating there and you wanting to be there will, in the long-run, be much more beneficial than the extra cost would be harmful. I am wishing you the best regardless of the decision you make!
